Unsolved Murder-Elizabeth Bannister
January 19, 2000
Evansville, Indiana
One of Evansville's most recent unsolved murders is
the stabbing death of Elizabeth Bannister. The 18 year
old girl was found stabbed to death in her apartment
at 254 Washington Avenue just after one in the
morning. Bannister lived in a house that was separated
into apartments. Police say there were three other
people in the home at the time of the murder...but all
claim they were in other units when she died.
Her ex-boyfriend and stepfather were among those at
the house, but one claimed to be asleep, another
claimed to be drunk.
Bannister's life was a sad one. Her mother died when
she was young and she was shuffled from one foster
home to another. Bannister's landlord, Helen Gebhardt
says Bannister was taking care of her stepfather who
is disabled.

Unsolved Crimes-Rick Deffendall

Unsolved Murder-Rick Deffendall
June 16, 1988
Pike County, Indiana
Rick Deffendall's mother found the 37 year old dead in
his bed, June 16th, 1988. He had been shot several
times with a large caliber weapon. Deffendall lived
out in the country near a little town called
Oatsville. Oatsville lies between Petersburg and
Oakland City, Indiana. Indiana State Police detectives
say the shooter was probably let into the home, or
entered while Deffendall was in bed. Detectives
believe Deffendall knew his killer because anyone
traveling to his home would have to know where they
were going to find it.
Detectives say it appeared Deffendall struggled with
his attacker in the kitchen because of a blow to the
kitchen window. Indiana State Police aren't sure of a
motive, but say Deffendall may have bragged to the
wrong person the day of the murder. He apparently had
sold numerous personal items in an attempt to get
enough money to buy a Corvette.
Detectives received numerous tips, but none led to an
arrest in the case. If you have any information about
the murder of Rick Deffendall call Indiana State
Police at 812-425-2266.
