Title: FBI issuing of guns
Description: what caliber?

MelissaT - June 19, 2007 07:29 AM (GMT)
I just wanted to ask, does anyone know what caliber of gun does the FBi issue for its agents? :D

I want to say standard issue is .9mm, but I have nothing to back that up with. Is there a website or something to check that out?

Hey, I was wondering that, too. So I found this on the how stuff works site...

QUOTE

In 1934, Congress granted FBI agents the authority to carry guns. For many years, the standard FBI gun was the .38. In the 1990s, the Bureau switched to 10mm semi-automatic handguns. These weapons proved to be too powerful for standard duty, and .40 caliber Smith & Wesson guns replaced them.

Hope this helps!

I love having friends with FBI connections... here u go:

"The Firearms and Training Unit at the FBI Academy issues them .40 caliber standard...some agents require different weapons...some purchase their own...but they do have MP-5 submachine guns (for HRT - Hostage Rescue Teams) and .45 caliber pistols assigned to each field office armory.

Some agents will use a different caliber than the .40 because of personal preferences... and they can 'turn in' the weapon or 'deny' the weapon at issuance... otherwise it is theirs, and stays with them until they are discharged."

A lot of agents like the Glock 27 pistol...most of those at the training my friend went to a few months ago carried that as their personal sidearm

That makes more sense. Wasn't it in the episode 'To Grandmother's House We Go' where D tells Frank Moran, who pawned his .32 automatic pistol because he wanted a Springfield model, that he was a Sig man himself?

 However, it sure looks like the one he drew during the bank robbery was a 9 mm Glock, not a Sig Sauer. Hard to tell, though... it happened so fast.

If agents are allowed the option to pick the gun of their choice, then that would explain why Glocks make the most appearance on the show rather than S & W's.

LOL, that's called a prop table... they weren't terribly careful with all those details. For example, the gun Tara fired through her salon cape was a .45, which would have burned a bit of a bigger hole as the gun discharged...

it's TV... :flower:

I'm sorry... I wasn't trying to cause trouble. A friend of mine knows two FBI agents, and we asked them, that's all. No biggie.

Yeah, no problem. I didn't know.
