The Requiem megawad is one of Doom 2's original masterpieces. It's a 32 level single player experience that simply has to be played. The levels range from the intriguing to the downright bizarre so you can't get bored. It's quite hard on Ultra Violence at times. Basically, there is something for everyone.

And one of the level designers is called Florian Helmberger. With a name like that, this wad has got to rock.

Difficulty: Hard (UV)

Requiem just pushes the scales to make the Hard rating. Experienced players shouldn't have too much trouble. I haven't got much to say because it's well balanced and there is a difficulty level for everyone.

Gameplay: Excellent

Almost every level in Alien Vendetta is an adventure. My mind still reels from the sheer talent on display here. Some maps are less fun than others but the quality is far higher than, say, Hell Revealed 2, which is simply a series of box-shaped rooms. Alien Vendetta takes place in fully decorated castles, and we're talking the real deal here chaps. It's uncanny.

Anders Johnsen proves himself beyond the ken of mortals with this incredible megawad. If the man never achieves anything else for the rest of his life the world will still know his name (well, we will know it, and that's enough!). If he charged £50 per download I would still recommend every Doom player in the world pay it and be amazed. If I seem to be leaving the other authors out I don't mean to; I get the impression that Anders was team leader for the project and he deserves carrying round on his friends' shoulders for this achievement.

Single player and co-op mode are supported in full, but don't expect a blast on Deathmatch. Load Dwango instead. Alien Vendetta is all about blasting demons.

Highlights: A city map where you're exploring buildings and climbing around at different heights is exciting and refreshing, and there's a cool moment where you're fighting a Mancubus at the edge of the map over a lake of acid. It's like you're fighting him at the edge of forever.

Lowlights: Not many to be honest. Co-op play is very frustrating at times because the maps are not optimised for it so you can force it into an unbeatable state. In fairness not so many people play co-op, and Alien Vendetta does it a lot better, so I can't mark the maps down for that.

Aesthetics: Good

Now we're talking. Some of the maps are better than average to look at and some are downright scary. There's quite a variation in levels with no cohesive theme. The castle levels are very impressive which is as they should be considering the talented mappers who worked on them.

Overall Score: 9/10

Pros:
- General weirdness at its best; unusual maps make for interesting gameplay.
- Difficulty level is well balanced.
- Timeless, and still better than most of the megawads which came after it.

Cons:
- Co-op mode is more frustrating than fun; Requiem is the only megawad that I know of with this problem.
- A couple of the maps are so outlandish they fail to fit in with the rest of the megawad.
