
Punk rock trio Green Day and British outfit Coldplay each scored two prizes to top the MTV Europe Music Awards handed out Thursday in the Portuguese capital.
Green Day's hit release "American Idiot" was named best album, and the Bay Area band also won the best rock category. Coldplay took best song honors for "Speed of Sound" and was named best U.K. & Ireland act.
Both bands performed at the star-studded show at Lisbon's Atlantic Pavilion, which opened with Madonna performing her new single "Hung Up" and innovative act Gorillaz, which won the award for best group, performing "Feel Good Inc." in hologram-style 3D animation with hip-hop group De La Soul live on stage.
Britain's Robbie Williams was named best male performer while Colombian chanteuse Shakira won best female. Los Angeles funk band the Black Eyed Peas won as best pop act, while British balladeer James Blunt was named best new act.
The Chemical Brothers won the best video prize for "Believe," Snoop Dogg won for best hip-hop artist, System of a Down won for best alternative act and Alicia Keys picked up best R&B honors.
Rock star humanitarian Bob Geldof received the 2005 "Free Your Mind" award for individuals active in fighting intolerance and prejudice.
British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen hosted the awards ceremony in the guise of his bemused newsman character Borat Saadiyev. Other performers included Akon, Foo Fighters, Pussycat Dolls, Williams, Shakira, System of a Down and the Black Eyed Peas.
