Title: Concentration...not!

NJO - February 28, 2006 07:20 PM (GMT)
Okay, the games are over...now what do we watch? I like to watch movies that I liked in the past over, and over! Is this just a quirk of mine or do any of you do this?

I used to be a avid reader, now I've not got the patience. Why, I don't know...could it be AADD? I have several books started but not finished. I love biographies and autobios...

What happens to our concentration...age or AD? Mine is very short.

I watch movies over and over, too, that I liked. It's easier to watch something you paid close attention to once so you can just enjoy it after that. I have a few favorites that I watch again and again.

As for reading, if the book doesn't catch me and draw me in in the first few pages, it goes. I don't have the patience to stick with a book that is a struggle to enjoy. There are too many other books.

Speaking of the Olympics, why wasn't Great Britain there? Were they boycotting or did they just happen not to have anyone in these particular sports this time. I found it odd that I didn't see any athletes from there.

I hadn't thought, but I watch the games sporadically. Remember the great pairs skaters, Orville and Dean?( is that the right sp?) Vee would probably know if they were boycotting.

Didn't they beat the USA in Curling??

NJO - February 28, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
 Curling? I have not watched that, just heard the name.

Susanne - February 28, 2006 09:14 PM (GMT)
 Curling....now there's something that will help you fall asleep.

 What do you do? See how interesting I have found it? Don't even know what it is all about!

Hey, there are a lot of underlying nuances!!

I grew up playing this sport and I even skipped in high school. Canadian men won Gold!!

It's a great social sport. I just know if you curled, you'd love it! HONEST gdbV

Gwen, I believe you. I even told John when we saw it that there must be more to this sport than most people realize.

So...you were a curler, hmmm? I have to tell you that I never knew anyone who did this sport.

Jo, you would know it if you saw it. They slide what looks like a rock with a handle, down an alley made of ice and then their teammates brush or rub the ice (I'm not sure which) with their tool to make the "rock" go where they want it to. At least this is my very limited understanding of this game. sz

I was very enticed by curling and was on the edge of my seat wondering why they were doing all the sweeping??? Can you explain more about it Gwen? And, by the way, did you notice any British players? gdbV gdbV ^db^ ^db^

I liked watching curling but didn't know what the heck the strategy was  My concentration is terrible -- with TV and books

NJO - March 1, 2006 04:10 AM (GMT)
I could once of stayed for hours in front of the TV or with my nose in a book! I'm totally changed... <s>

There was a team from GBR.

Sweeping is used to keep a rock in a certain pathway down the ice or to keep the speed up on a rock if it's thrown too lightly.

Rocks are thrown 2 ways, out-turn and in-turn.

The strategy is akin to chess - they plan out the ends.

I hope this helps???

Marti - March 1, 2006 06:07 PM (GMT)
Are the rocks magnatized??? gdbV Hope you don't mind my silly questions...I've never played cheess ^db^

NJO - March 1, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
Me, either! I will have to watch curling if I get the chance! ;)

Gwen - March 1, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
They're not magnetized. The lights you may have seen flashing are for hogline violations. You cannot hang onto the rock over this line upon delivery. :)

Gwen - March 1, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
Marti...I should have added that the way it is similar to chess is the moves (ie where the rocks are placed on the ice) are planned out before the end even starts. You become better at this the more you curl - many players cannot skip or don't want to because mentally, it is exhausting at times. The strategy may have to be changed as the end moves along ...hence all the concentration you see on the skip's face!
