Dear NADF Membership:
Because of the thoughtfulness of a long-time member, we are able to inform you that West-Ward Pharmaceuticals is reporting a backorder of 85 days with their cortisone acetate product.
Unfortunately, West-Ward is the only manufacturer of cortisone acetate. There are medication "compilers" who can make medications for individuals, but we have very little information on what "compilers" are available.
Of course, there is aways the option of switching to another form of cortisol replacement medication, such as hydrocortisone, prednisone, et al. Please remember that, if a switch is made, dosages of the different medications vary, some drastically, i.e. 1 mg prednisone = 4 mg hydrocortisone. Also, when a different form of cortisol replacement medication is used, Florinef® (a.k.a. fludrocortisone acetate) dosages might have to be changed. Please work closely with your endocrinologist or physician during medication changes.
Best of health and luck to all,
Melanie Wong
