Title: Do I feel silly
NJO - July 20, 2005 09:16 PM (GMT)
I recently had DSL put in and since I couldn't plug into my surge protector I was unpluging the little box because we have a lot of thunderstorms. Last evening I put in a surge protector. Tried to turn off the cpu, it kept coming back on...I unplug the little DSL box, it turns off. So early this morning I call the IP provider and tell them the problem. The two repairmen were here by 12:30p.m., that cpu went off every time for them! gr-co I felt so foolish, but it did happen... really it did.

Not as silly as I did feel! It did it again this evening when I tried to shut it down... gr-co

Really not so silly...I have a hacker (s). Scary. We hear about his happening to others, but when it's you...I feel violated. -yn-

Are you sure it's a hacker? I know my fan was too dusty (figures) inside my computer and it would turn my computer off every thirty seconds to a minute - which is the opposite of your problem, I know. We thought we had a virus.
I have wondered if I had someone peeking over my shoulder when I was on the net. I will type in something - say www.google.com, and the typing reallly slows down, or I'll be reading a page and it will skip down to the next section and I didn't move anything to make that happen. That kind of stuff makes me feel really creeped out.

This stuff creeps me out too, Shauna. I find it unbelievably coincidental that Jo's problems are exactly what I had going on until I told my computer tech guy and he did something to make it stop. He was shocked when I told him my computer turns on by itself. Now that I'm blocked, they have moved on? I don't know, it actually MAY be a coincidence. Who knows?

Jo, are you sure that it's a hacker? How do you know?
Me, I've been internet-ing for years and have never suffered at the hands of a hacker. Not once.
Protect yourself. Truly. I have tons of protection on my PC. I run the latest Norton Anti-Virus (updated at least once a week) and a hard-wired firewall on my router.
Plus I run AdAware, SpyBot, and Microsoft anti-spyware software (currently available only in Beta, but it's excellent, nonetheless) every 24 hours (overnight, when I'm in bed).
And I use ONLY web-based email addresses (Google. Yahoo) so emails from people I haven't approved are stuck in an email box UNTIL I APPROVE 'EM.
Get in touch with me. Email me (my email address is in my profile) or PM me.
Hope this helps.
Good luck,
Cathie

Thanks for your advice. The phone company had me get a router ( which two different parts of the internet service told me I didn't need) and the tech guy came back to install it. We could see them trying to get in after we got the router running. He also changed my IP. I also use the NCTC email service. I approve what I bring on my computer, too. It has caught several viruses and i didn't get them.
This has really gotten my attention and NCTC's also. I hope they can trace these sneaky rascals!

I use Outlook Express for my email. Is there a way for me to have mail from unknowns go into an approval area? I have been getting a lot of offers for Viagra lately <_<
Cathie Black - July 23, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
Who's your provider of your internet service? Mine is Earthlink and I use their web-based email page to filter out unwanted emails. If I receive an email from someone whose name I haven't included in my Earthlink web-based email address book then that email doesn't even come down into my Outlook Express email Inbox.
It is very effective at keeping dross out (0) Nothing, but nothing, gets through that I don't want to get through.
Hope that helps.

Thank you! It does help very much. I have Comcast so I guess I have to go into the Comcast email settings and look for changes. I'll do that. Thanks B)

Hey thanks for the tips, Cathie and Jo. I was able to go into my email settings and pick out certain words that if contained in the body of an email, the email will be deleted. So I will no longer be getting offers for Viagra and believe it or not, I don't want to buy a genuine Rolex watch for $19.99 so Rolex is out too.

Susanne, that's funny about the Rolexes. I checked for a place to get them repaired a few months ago for my brother and then Bam! ( as Emeril says) there were all these offers for Rolex watches, all were just spam...makes you so mad to get these. But at least my spam box caught them and I can click one button and ALL GONE! (0)
You will probably have to keep adding key words to your Outlook because these are sneaky rascals we're dealing with and they try to find way around your blocks. They are learning also that personal names will often get through to your inbox.
We are learning and that is really good....
Oh, wow, I'm the edit queen around here.
