Title: Marti do you still feel better w/Vit D?

NJO - November 17, 2005 05:47 PM (GMT)
Marti how is it going with the vit D supplementation? I have been bad last few weeks...haven't opened a new container of calcium and I'm wondering if this could be why I am so moody and nervous. I get Vit D in that...I am very blue in winter...I know I've been bad not taking my calcium... <s>

:D Yes Jo, I did a little poll on HO and found that people are taking 1000 mg of vitamin D a day to 2000. I had heard it on a news program and someone else did too! Anyhoo, I'm taking two soft gels a day (800mg total) of pure vitamin D, nothing added) plus the 200mg I get with my calcium. My mood was helped with the first dose. I found the soft gels at Eckerd and they were only $2.99 for a bottle of 60. Each gell is 400 mg. sooooooo, "Pack up your troubles, c'mon get happy"!

I took my calcium last night and a vit. D tablet this morning and I think you are on to something Marti! I do feel less blue and depressed...yeah! (0)

:D I know what you mean Jo - I've been walking around for a couple days now with a grin on my face and humming. The laundry is all caught up and I baked a couple of apple pies last night! Arch says keep taking it!

 Arch likes the effect, huh? ;) Good stuff that Vit D...and apple pies!

 Oh yeah Jo, he didn't even offer Dave (son) a piece of pie when he stopped over after finishing his last midnight turn of the week...he visits every Friday before I'm out of bed.

I am really liking the difference in my feeling of well-being with the Vit D. I am feeling more mellow and yes, energetic. A positive attitude helps us be more interested in doing things...

I've been taking two after breakfast, but after reading what Susanne posted from Wanda, I'll start tomorrow taking it 3x daily. Arch has started taking it too.

I bought some Vit. D yesterday. Little gel footballs :) . I like those type of vites, they are easy to get down.

Found more info at www.nih.gov on vitamin D...I did a search for it and there was a lot more...haven't had time to absorb it all yet, because it's been so hectic here, but this too shall pass! I'm glad it's making a differene to you Jo, and I hope it will do the same for you Susanne. I use the little footballs too.

Marti, I was just reading an article that says that research has found that low levels of Vitamin D are associated with more falls in older people.

From Weill Medical College of Cornell University's Food and Fitness Advisor:

Dutch researchers studied 1238 men and women (average age 75) and found those with low Vitamin D levels had lower levels of physical and neuromuscular performance compared to people with adequate levels. However, when intake was increased and serum D levels rose, so did scores for tests of muscle strength, balance and coordination.

Anyway, if I remember correctly, you had a few falls. Do you find an improvement in your physical stability since adding Vit. D to your day?

I can't begin to tell you the difference it has made in my life. Yesterday I made dinner for Carol and Barney in honor of her birthday on the 29th. Everything was cleaned up in the kitchen to begin with and I made a scratch cheesecake (Paula Deen), and did a marinated BBQ brisket and baked rosemary potatoes. I could never have held together two months ago. Arch was a help in cleaning up cause I was pretty pooped after the fact, but I'm fine and ready to go today. Woke up at 2:00, took 2.5mg HC and went back to sleep until 7. Was in bed 11:45. The fact that no one else seems to notice except Arch, is amazing to me. He kept asking me if I was OK during the day yesterday, because I don't usually spend time in the kitchen working. The oven was on from 10:00 to 5:00. Even took time out to get a haircut in the afternoon...went up and down a flight of steps without much trouble...I usually had to take them one at a time. It seems like a miracle to me, but I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. I haven't fallen since August and I took 32.5 mg HC during the day for the extra activity, then the 2.5 because my body said, "gimme more"

That dinner sounds yummy! :P I am so happy that you are so much better! I think going up that flight of stairs was a feat! I have trouble with stairs...have for years. I am taking the Vit D faithfully and I believe it's helped me a lot also.

 thanks Jo, wish you could all drop in for a piece of cheesecake! I'm taking 400mg of D 3 x a day after food, plus 200mg more that is in the calcium. The other thing I notice is appetite curbing. I have the capacity to consume huge amounts of food on special occasions, but I want no more of it the next day and I've lost about 10 pounds. My life is good :P
