Title: Okay, my ears are ringing...
NJO - October 28, 2005 07:00 PM (GMT)
My head (sinuses) are stuffy and my ears are ringing...could my recent increase in thyroid med be doing the ear thing? I have had a problem with tinnitus for years...permanent damage from too much asprin therapy. I took the Nexium and that causes this , but it's gone by now...any thought on this? I do have a little pain in my left ear...i have been putting peroxide in them...the Dr told Doyle to do this to clear his out...If it ain't one thing it another.

Tinnitis, ah yes, that's the screaming in my ears! I always blamed mine on wearing a headset in my telephone operating days. I have in the past visited an ENT and had the wax removed, especially if the ears are plugged and peroxide doesn't cut it.

Hi Jo, Didn't they used to say if your ears are ringing someone is talking about you?? :o My ears get goofy a few days before I get a cold or sinus thing, hopefully that is not the case with you. Allergies? Maureen

More than likely it the former! I do have allergies though and my sinuses are acting up!

Tinnitis, ringing in the ears, is often a sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Now for the interesting part: a deficiency of B12 can also manifest in depression (hmm, your other post). I am thinking that possibly the slightly increased dose of thyroid hormone may be interfering with your B12 so you may need to supplement it if you want to remain on the thyroid dose.
Hope you're feeling a little better.

How much B12? I take 1000mcg. per day...glad to know this...
Susanne - October 29, 2005 03:49 AM (GMT)
If you truly are deficient, and that is the big "if" here, then 2000 mcg would be in order for a month, followed up by 1000 mcg daily thereafter. If you are already supplementing, though, I wouldn't think you are dealing with a deficiency, unless, like I mentioned, the increased thyroid hormone is hampering your body's use of it. I'll read up on this some more and let you know what I find out. Feel better.

Just another thought here - B12 may not be converting, in which case you would need a monthly injection. It can be checked with blood work.

I couldn't find any more info, but I was thinking that possibly your increased thyroid med is revving up your metabolism, which in turn could cause you to use up your B12 faster. I am wondering if you have had the need to increase your steroids, because you may also be using them up at a faster rate.
I remember that Aspen had a buzzing head on too much T3. Since this is along those lines, too, maybe it is just a little too high of a dose for you.
Let us know how your changes go and good luck with them.

Thanks, Susanne. I guess it will take a few days to get back to "normal" on my old dose...sure don't want to drop below what I need...might take too long to get back to feeling good. I was reading the about.com thyroid forum yesterday and some had done that...stopped or weren't taking their dose regularly and sure messed up. Took a long time to recover and some were taking too much because they weren't consistant. Then when they were they became hyper fast.
I have increased my B12 though.

Now it sounds more like a sworm of crickets in my ears. And there is some pain in the ears themselves...

Jo, are your sinuses acting up? You're not getting otitis media are you?
I hope you feel better soon and you get a volume control for the tinnitus.

I fear that I do have an ear infection, Sue. I feel like something is going on and i just hate to go to the doctor. :( It may just be allergy related though...either makes us feel badly.

Jo, do you use saline to flush the sinuses? It helps a lot to keep the congestion down, also rhinocort etc (which you probably already know) If the sinuses are infected also then you will need antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon, I hate allergies, they are the pits.
