Title: Quilt project

Shelley bob - June 22, 2008 02:36 AM (GMT)
Here's my idea....

I want to make a quilt using old shirts or other articles of clothing from all of you and then sell it in some way to make a donation for people with chronic illnesses like ours. I was talking to Diane and she's going to help figure out the best way to make money off of the quilt while I concentrate on the project. I also thought it might be nice to include the donors names if they wanted to....like Dusty might donate a shirt she wore in one of her races and we would write "Dusty, shirt worn during such and such race, addisonian" or "Wanda, my favorite gardening shirt" or "Shelley, pants too big after losing 40 lbs." or "Jo, old painting shirt" just anything that celebrates the variety of who we are and what we do even through our challenges. Of course anyone wanting to donate clothing would be anonymous. The fabric can be any color or style as I'm going to make a crazy quilt design that will be able to incorporate lots of fabric choices. The fabrics should be fairly lightweight... no denim or fleece. I will be able to use some t-shirt type fabrics. I would like to use collar points to make a sawtooth type border (if I get enough to go all the way around) and use some pockets or other embellisments on the shirt for interest and fun. I think we should spread the word to any other websites for chronic illnesses....such as celiacs or lupus and the like... The more the merrier I say. So feel free to spread the word. I'd really really like all of you to participate....even those of you who are just readers and don't post much. You don't even need to include your return address. I will post pictures as I progress so you can all see how it's going. I will be collecting fabrics until the last day of July. Then I will begin to design with what I've got then...does that sound like enough time? Send the clothing and any info about the clothing you'd like to include to 501 N 3rd W, Rigby, Idaho 83442
Let's hope this benefits alot of people

Shelley you know what I think about this project but wanted to say online that this is SO COOL!! I just love the whole idea....and you are very ambitious to take this on.....how do you do this stuff w/ the kids, homeschooling, all the cooking you do(that one really blows me away esp the baking as I cannot stand to bake and am really bad at it) etc etc....!!!??
I was thinking about what I might send...and thinking it would be so much easier to find things that I would embroider.....'does not fit into anymore,,may never fit into again....'....You could make the entire quilt out of the stuff I could send like that!!

the thing that really stands out is the baby blanket of my son's I brought with me to the diagnosing endo appt to keep warm.....but it is one of those fluffy acrylic things...not good quilting matl....but maybe what if just a corner was to be in a fabric pocket kind of like a bit of handkerchief sticking out??
this will be really fun to see what kinds of things people come up with....

Maybe Dusty since she is so good at that blog stuff and has a site..could make a spot for you to post progress...and the neat thing about those blogs is that I think people can write in their comments on it....another computer thing I don't know anything about.....

You do need to know what is allowed legally as to raising funds for charity. IRS and state level. If you go through a 501 ( c ) 3 organization that will be taken care of...raffles are not usually allowed. These orgainzations already have a charitable solicitation permit. I know this as I was president of more than one of these organizations over the years.

Thanks for the info....Soon I will look into this...any other input appreciated.!

What about NORD as it covers many rare chronic diseases?

NJO - June 23, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
I believe it is very important to have a designated charity. It will let those involved know if they wish to participate. The project may be hindered because there is no set plan. This is said with concern because I fully understand that Shelley has a good idea and wants to put her talents to use helping others. (grh)

....I think the people here and elsewhere would participate anyway...not like it is asking for time, money etc....just fabric....If you want to take the ball on this feel free......You do have the background w/ organizations etc....and seem anxious about it....doesnt' really matter who does what of course except for our master quilter!!!

I would like to suggest the NORD organization for consideration...it seems to be a very active non-profit organization.

N.O.R.D.

This is just a suggestion...but please read over the website.

Jo, I like the idea of NORD, but the link doesn't work for me. I've heard they do a lot of good work for children in particular. (grh)

Everything is working nicely this morning - I found it interesting that a specific rare condition, such as Addison's Disease can be singled out for a donation. Sounds like a good idea to me. How about the rest of you? (grh)

I hope this is all coming together...Shelley has a good idea and it can do so much for those with AD and other rare diseases.

I was able to get on the NORD site today. Interesting to read all the rare diseases. Incredible. I think NORD would be a great organization for our project. (grh)
