Title: The lack of cortisol/adrenaline?
NJO - June 3, 2008 02:47 PM (GMT)
Last evening we went to a local restaurant and I was walking in and this van pulled into a parking place and immediately proceeded to back up...direct toward me! I sort of fail to respond as I should...I was getting out of the path and Doyle was warning me and making sure I got clear but Ido not get excited or think clearly but when I walk into the restaurant I felt like everything poured out of me...no cortisol! I took a little extra but I didn't take enough because I felt badly the rest of the night and I still feel it today...
Do most of you lack the proper fight or flight response since AD? We are supposed to still make adrenaline but do we? Or was that what happened the adrenaline was released but there wasn't enough cortisol to cover it or match the response?

Jo I've had that happen when I'm low in the first place, as in the fall I took on the ice last winter. I could feel it drain right out of me, and I was quite aggitated <_< Should have gone home, but stayed and ate - my clothes were soaked clear through. Sometimes I just don't have good sense in this kind of situation. If I remember right I think I took 20 extra when we got home. If you're still feeling YUCKY today you'd best take an extra 10 to see if it helps, and go from there if that's not enough. (I am NOT a physician, just a fellow Addisonian.)

You may not be a physician but you know a lot about this rotten disease! {htd} Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one...it was such a small thing...but it affected me big time!

Oh I don't know Marti....I think after having AD as long as you have you're smarter about it than most docs!!!
Jo,
We have a standing order that no one is allowed to scare mom. There have been times when the boys have accidentily scared me and I get a quick burst of adrenaline but then I get really sick and shaky afterwards. What I think happens is that we get the boost of pure adrenaline but unlike normals we don't get the boost of the longer acting stress hormone cortisol....that is why we don't get the clearer senses and the fight or flight response. And that is why we feel yucky after a scare because our body is demanding the cortisol and the adrenals don't make it. The boys know what happens to me if they accidentily scare me and when they do they feel sooooo bad. They keep saying they are sorry and do I need my medicine. I've got such good boys....ah but I digress.
I'm sorry you still feel yucky today. You'll need to rest and take a little extra HC and baby yourself. I find if I reduce the outside stressors.....noise, light etc... my body calms down faster.
I hope you feel better very soon!!

Jo...well as far as the timing....it was for dinner...so you were probably at a low for the day right? If it had happened in the morning perhaps you would have had enough coverage.....I think you needed to take more last night esp since you continued to feel bad. the adrenaline thing I continue to be confused about.....I know if someone surprises me etc or something sudden happens that is more 'adrenaline' related than like an injury or having a cold etc....I feel immediately sickish.....
Glad he missed!

Just read Shelley's post after I posted.....yes.....'what she said'......she explained it much better than me......it is That kind of Surprise that makes me feel yukky....
So...is the jury still out, or do we addisonians produce adrenaline when surprised but not cortisol(of course) ???
I have never 'gotten' this part of the disease.

Me, too, Diane! Doyle said he felt he could have gotten to me in time but it was close...
I am also confused with the adrenaline issue...I feel the same way if I am just startled or say Doyle's driving frightens me...I feel yucky ( techincal term  ) immediately.

Well....3 of us used it, so I think we all know just what 'yukky' means...it isn't full blown sick etc,,,,just well, yukky! So I think it qualifies as a techical term!

anything high stress like falling, or as you said the van backing toward you totally wipes me out...into an almost dazed like state.

I think I remember my anatomy prof saying that the brain makes a little adreneline. It's hard to believe anything relating to my adrenals functions. Although, if we're primary we should still have a functioning adrenal medulla because the antibodies are only specific to the cortex. Antibodies are very fussy little things. They only will destroy what they are specifically designed to destroy.
I don't go on amusement park rides or anything like that because I don't know what would happen. Does anyone else seek an adreneline thrill like fast rides? What happens?
