Title: O.K. ladies embarassing subject here...
Description: Need help/advice

Shelley bob - May 28, 2008 03:59 AM (GMT)
I have extremely thick dark hair and pale skin (I got skin cancer as a kid and never go out in the sun w/o sunscreen...think ghost) Well I grow a better mustache and beard than my husband! I started years ago just plucking the few dark lip hairs...then there was more and more. I tried the nair type things and they didn't remove the thick stubborn ones. I tried hot wax at home and at the salon but I get really bad zits or ingrown hairs from that. The bleaching doesn't seem to help that much because my hair is sooo thick I just look like I have a blonde beard. I don't know what to do anymore. It really is annoying. Are my hormones off? Is that why it's getting so much worse as I age? Or is it because I had my ovary removed in Aug? I still have one though. What can a person do??? Do I have too much testoserone or too much something else?? It truly is driving me crazy. If my hair wasn't as thick as rope it wouldn't look so bad but....!!??
I've lost hair on my arms, legs and pubic area but of course not where I want it to be gone on my face!!! I'd really love some feedback.... I feel like I could have a sex change without the hormones

Thanks,

This is something I had when on high doses of steroids years ago and now I have more hair on my face than I'd like but this must be post menopausal...and I like you lost hair everywhere else but not my lip! I personally have one of those little shavers and shave it off...but mine isn't really too dark so I don't know this would work for you. I tried some of the hair removal treatments and only managed to either bruise my skin or rub it raw trying to get the hair off...it stayed!

Do you notice a difference with the amount of DHEA you are taking? How is your testosterone I wonder? It could be hormonal for sure but which? Lack of or too much?

If I were to guess, I'd say you're probably producing a little too much testosterone. I too have lost all body hair except facial, which is light colored and textured, and I just use Arch's shaver when I can't stand it any more. B) It gets long enough that I can pull it!

Shelley, When I was taking testosterone I had a lot of facial hair on my lip and chin. I was able to just pluck them although it was an everyday ordeal and I was very embarrassed by it. I am also very fair, I have that Irish skin , and my "Beard" was blond. I went off the testosterone after a short while but when I started on DHEA it came back. But...my DHEA level was virtually non-existent so I started on 100mg daily for a about a month. The hair was back with a vengeance. I am now taking 12.5mg DHEA daily and I don't have much of a problem. Just a few stubborn hairs that I have to put up with. I wonder if your levels of testosterone and DHEA are high? That could explain it. HMMMMMM.
Oh, how we suffer to be beautiful!

Shelley, where are you at w/ your monthly cycles? One thing that happens is that it is not that you have too much testosterone, but that the ratios of the estrogen to testosterone and progesterone get to be imbalanced as estrogen production slows down.....
I get my upper lip waxed, and I do have fuzzies sometimes too much around my chin and kind of along my jawline to the back...it is very fair but bothers me. I haven't tried it by my hairdresser told me to try using one of those hair trimmers set on very low.....instead of shaving it......
My friend has one and I keep meaning to borrow it to give it a try.....

Boy I'd be just fine if my hair was just fuzz type stuff....no mine is as thick and dark as what you'd find in your eyebrows. Seriously!! If I don't get these suckers plucked out you can feel the growth like a 5:00 shadow....very stiff. There aren't as many or as close together as your eyebrows but they are definitely very thick and dark hairs. I decided to get my hormones checked just to get a clearer picture of what's going on. So I went to my local GP (LOVE him) and asked if he would just order the blood work and without an appt. and then I'd come in and talk over the results with him and he did it. So tomorrow sometime I have to go to a lab in Idaho Falls and get my blood drawn. I haven't had my TSH or any hormones done for a long time so it'll be good to get a peek at what's happening. I'm thinking something got thrown off when I lost that ovary last Aug.
The hair is so thick and stubborn that the nair stuff won't budge it and even waxing won't get alot of it. I have to pluck each one with a tweezer to get them out. And of course you have to wait until they are long enough for the tweezer to be able to get a grip so you still look like you have a beard half the time. gggrrrrrr  When the doc removed my ovary he said it was all filled with cysts and was a mess so he looked at the other one to see if I had PCOS. The other one is fine.
Ah it's **** to get old isn't it???

Thanks for all the ideas...
