Title: Losing wt....
Description: wt watchers anyone?

Dianne - April 24, 2008 04:28 PM (GMT)
I really need a plan that just tells me what to eat and how much....I would love to just do a Jenny Craig thing but not willing to spend the money.
Has anyone tried wt. watchers? I just always wondered if it would work for us who need really low carb diets?

I have known people who have had success with WW's but haven't tried it myself. The only thing to be mindful of with these programs that provide their own food is that many times they put lots of soy in them for protein. That could really mess up your thyroid.

MCKMNL - April 24, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
what about the insulin resistance diet? I have the book here, easy and simple. It is just about linking and balancing you carb too protein ratio...:)

Dianne - April 24, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
Missy..is that the name of the book?
I would like to read that one...If only I could lose wt by just reading diet books...I would be a twig!!

Then there is the Calorieking.com program that you download. It is free for a week, then is thirty dollars. It is very good, a person can decide the proportions of carb, fat, protein and then it keeps track for you with your goal of calories. Lots of interesting stuff in there. You could play with it for a week.... and there is a club to join but you don't have to! Just download the program.

I just checked. That program is now 45 dollars!!! but I think it is worth it. Don't join the club... just click on software.

Well, while I am at it, I had just as well be specific. The program you download is called the Nutrition and Exercise Manager from Calorieking.com

I like the Protein Power diet. That's what I used to lose 40 lbs. I am planning on going back on it as soon as my husband gets a job. We are having to live off of our 1 yrs worth of food storage right now. But I feel better on it so as soon as he gets his @#@#$% butt in.... hee hee, there I go again getting cranky. Someday he will get a job I have faith   Anyway I digress. The easy way to do the protein power diet is to eat 30 grams or less of carbs for 3 meals and 15 grams or less of carbs for 2 snacks. Make sure you count ALL the carbs....like condiments etc... they can add up quickly. There are lots of really good low carb substitute stuff out there. I have a low carb flour that I really like. The low carb really helped me to feel better and also lose weight.
If I can help let me know :D

I can relate to that comment! ;) I have several books , including Protein Power here on my shelves but still have way too much weight on me!

I did have a smoothie for lunch with a small amount of whey protein powder and yogurt w/fruit and I know there is still too much carb there but I have a hard time getting in protein as I watch my cholesterol and soy is out and eggs...carbs are so much more available...too easy. :(

MCKMNL - April 24, 2008 09:11 PM (GMT)
yes that is the name of the book...I have it here, if you give me a bit i can tyoe you in somethings too eat :) it is all about link and balance and really is super easy.. it is like 55 grams of carbs, and if you eat something that has 15grams of carbs, MAKE SURE, you link it with 7 grams of protien.. very simple:) I really like this book.. easy too understand and gives lots of adivce. You's think I'd be using it .. I'm a bit FAT.......I am a carb addict *sigh*

KylesMom - April 25, 2008 02:16 PM (GMT)
I have a friend who is on weight watchers. SHe really seems to like it but keep in mind she has just started the program. I'll let ya know how things turn out. I know this probably wont applay to any of you on this board, but if you are a soda or tea drinker and things of that nature - that is qutie a bit right there. My husband always has something to drink in his hand. It used to be pop and my sister was telling him she lost like 12 lbs by just switching to diet alone...nothing else. Yeah right. Sure enough he quit all pops and went to diet drinks and he lost like 14 lbs. Of course after the initial weight loss there is no more and you will put it back on if you go back to sugary drinks I guess. But anyways. I on the other hand, am not so much on drinks so it didn't work for me,.

Dianne - April 25, 2008 03:05 PM (GMT)
Really I just think I eat too much.....and not enough exercise...and i like carbs too...and also I Know the hc and the age thing....almost 50 eeeks....! is playing a big part.....
I just need to really decid to make a big effort....

I went thru photos this week....decided to pull and put up ones I like of myself instead of the too much wt ones I don't like.....they just make me feel bad...The good ones remind me that I Can look better if I lose wt....

;) Well, the first step is an accurate food scale. Then, learn serving sizes and calorie content.... and what you want your proportions of Protein, Fat and Carbs to be and go from there. I use Calorieking.com's Nutrition program, and it is ever so easy to use! Figures everything for you! Try it, you might like it..... hee hee It is doctor recommended for diabetics... my brother has used it for a year and has lost fifty pounds without suffering!

With any program, you really need a food scale. Guestimating makes it too easy to cheat.

Diane I lost 50# with weight watchers, but started nibbling those bad carbs again and gained 20+ back. I am eating sensibly at this point, and have made it a hard and fast rule not to nibble at night. Nothing but water after supper. Your knees will thank you!!! :D

Rebecca - April 25, 2008 09:39 PM (GMT)
Dianne,
When I worked at Coldwater Creek I always asked the people buying close because of wt. loss how they did it. Every single one, except one, told me Weight Watchers. The one exception was NutriSystem. That was a lot of customers! I'll be joining soon. I've gained 4 lbs. in the last 4 weeks! The closer to 50 I get, the faster the wt. goes on. I don't understand why.
Gotta end here. Spaghetti and meatballs on the stove...Hmmmm. -cks-

The best and only diet I would recommend is a low GI one, it balances your blood glucose, helps to normalise cholesteral levels etc and you are not hungry on it. You eat all your food groups, it is more just changing a few things rather than radically changing your lifestyle, plus it is safe for the whole family so no cooking one thing for them and eating something boring for yourself :) There is a Low Gi book that has a menu and exercise plan in it that also touches on cortisols effects on insulin resistence etc and how this diet helps to counteract that. It is a diet for life, you feel good on it, never hungry, no highs an lows that can be contributed to blood sugar levels see sawing all over the place. If you get the book, it also tells you which foods to eat out eg italian, thai, japanese etc so that you can still have your favourites and not feel guilty.

Hi All,

Yeah i know it's been a long time since I've posted, but I honestly feel I can help (some of you) on this subject.

As some of you may remember I had to go on a real strict "Hypoglycemia Diet" & SERIOUSLY balance my Carb's, Protein, Fat & YES, folks - FIBER. Look for High Fiber products (Natural tho' not chemical).

The Yogurts I eat are Dannon Light & Fit Sugar & Carb Control. They say right on front that they only have 3 grams of carbs, 5 grams of Protein & 60 cals per 4 oz. yogurt. They are a little more expensive then say a "Generic" or store brand pk of 7 oz yogurts, but even if you eat 2 at a meal to be full, that's still only 120 cal's, & 6 carbs & 10 grams of protein. They are $2.99 a 4 pack at my local store. That of course can vary a little by store.

I buy whole wheat breads that have at least 3 to 4 grams Fiber, and no more than 15 - 19 carbs per slice.

Yes it's hard, but since being on the Methotrexate - which has lowered my apetite in general, I have lost 20 lbs. Hopefully I will keep on losing. The key is not to get depressed when you "Plateau" off from time to time as this is normal with any diet.

Adding Fiber supplements is good too. I prefer Chewable Fiber One tabs as they are sweet & taste like a little "TREAT" in the afternoon.

Joan - April 28, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
Kathy, what were the proportions you used of C, P and F?

JOAN -cks-

KathyK - April 28, 2008 05:57 PM (GMT)
Basically like one person said about the (I think) low GI diet. Balance 4 to 7 grams of protein against 15 -19 grams carbs (about 1/3 to 1/2) at least 3 grams of Fiber with every meal, and 2-4 grams of (NonSaturated) fat.

This keeps my Blood Sugars Stable, hunger & cravings down & energy stable.

You can also add Fiber powder to things at meals to up your Fiber, but it is best tro keep searching for things that have more fiber naturally in them.

Kashi Granola is great in AM. Although high in Fat, has a WHOPPING 6 grams Fiber, which fills you up & keeps your Sugar level all morning long. Sometimes you may have to go a little higher than you normally try to in fat just to get the fiber, but it's a definite POsitive trade off.

KathyK - April 28, 2008 07:04 PM (GMT)
I just reread posts - It was Sue Hassell. I think she's right. Obviously I'm no Expert on the subject, but I think with our ADDED prob's from Carbs with our disease, eating LOW on the GI Scale and balancing Carb's Proteins Fat & fiber is really the ONLY way we can possibly lose & SUSTAIN the loss.

Also, as the weight comes off, you feel yourself able to (Physically) do a little more on a dialy basis which helps also - Toning & such.

Also, key for me was to make sure I was actually taking enough med;s to control all inflammatory issues, cause otherwise your body uses up all its energy fighting inflammation rather than burning calories.

MCKMNL - April 29, 2008 11:09 PM (GMT)
well I feel lucky enough this evening too have a clear functional mind, so here goes...

Diet mumbo jumbo *lol*.. Ok this is very very easy too follow, it really is. For me it took ALOT of ups and sowns too get this right, not because I did not understand the lifestyle change, but because I am a serious, and I mean serious CARB addict..

it is all about linking and balancing your protine and your carbs. You really should not take in anymore then 30 grams of carbs at ONE MEAL.. remember you can eat every 2-3 hrs, so you really never do feel hungry, and if you do veggies can be eatin at any time..

what I do is look at the things I like, then I look at the package, see what the serving size is... what the carbs and protien amount is per serving serving.

Take bread for exapmle.. I do not eat white bread.. I eat Sara Lee ( is this ok too mention ) ? the product name? anyway I hope so.. one slice of 7 whole grain sara lee bread is 7 carbs, so I can if I want can have 2 slices if bread too equal 14 grams of carbs, then I will add turkey breast, tuna, peanut butter... enough too equal 7 grams protien..then I eat loads of veggies ( If I am still hungry ) REMEMBER JUST LOOK AT HE SERVING and the protein too caarb ratio.. serving size for PB..... 2tblsp of PButter equals 7 grams of protein..

The Healthy choice soups are already linked and balanced for you..so these are great too have on hand..the measuring is already done for you. I am lazy...so I look for things already linked and balanced, however alot of these meals are pretty pricey..but seeing how I am LAZY, I do the easy route..

eggs, cottage cheese, string cheese, nuts, seeds..and ofcourse again VEGGIES..deli meats, chicken, pork chops.. other lean meats...I'm not really into low fat stuff.. but it does call for this..so cottage cheese will be low fat, and Mayo and other things, but I like my fat, so I get the reg stuff..

this is the break down.. if you have a meal where you have say 30 grams of carbs, make sure you have 14grams of protein with it..
If your meal has 15 grams of carbs, make sure you have 7grams of protein...

typical day for me is this..

1 slice of 7 whole grain bread, and hard boiled egg...

Snacks ( veggies or nuts ).. but you can make your snack anything...

lunch...soup like the above, and loads of veggies cause the soups mever seem too fill me up..or 1 slice of bread with turkey breast..

dinner is like half baked potato
veggie
chicken, pork chops
BIG SALAD loaded with veggies with a mediterraniun dressing.. which is just 3tblsp of EVOO, 2tblsp freshly sqeezed lemon, seal salt and pepper too taste.. just mix all this together. Healthy for you :)

Again, the hardest thing is getting rid of the darned crappy stuff, which gosh I just love so much.. it really DOES work.. I did this diet about 8 months back, and lost 20 pounds, but again.. the Holidays were coming up, and I ate badly..

I am in the process of doin a cleanse..so my day is different then all this right now..

if you want any recipes I can share them with you, not sure if I can as they are from the book...the book in my opion is well worth the money.

Shelley bob - April 29, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
This is basically what I did to lose 40 lbs. I can't do it right now because my hubby isn't working and we are living off of our food storage which isn't meat and fresh veggies but I will be going back on as soon as he gets a job. I used the carb control tortillas for a wrap type sandwich. They taste great! I also use a substitute sugar called wheylow that is made from milk sugar and has 1/4 the carbs of regular sugar. Other sugar substitutes don't do well on my tummy. The wheylow measures and acts just like sugar. Love the stuff. I also use an almost carb free flour called carbalose. It's a pretty good substitute too.
My doc said this was the best way to avoid becoming diabetic while on steroids. It helps balance out your blood sugars. I do feel better when I'm eating that way and I am less hungry and have more energy.
