Title: Silly little OT question
Shelley bob - April 18, 2008 11:59 PM (GMT)
Do you have any tricks for not getting hang nails or how to take care of them? I seem to be getting them alot all of a sudden. And my cuticles are splitting and getting caught on things and tearing.....ouchie!
Not a big deal but kind of annoying.
Thanks,
(grh)

Shelley, I am in the same boat. My cuticles are horrible right now. Not sure why. And they look just awful. (grh) What are we lacking?

Thyroid being low can affect the nails...but this is usually splitting , flaking nails and ridges.
Try getting a good cuticle cream or vitamin E oil and rubbing this into the nails and cuticles. Are either of you taking fish oil or other Omega 3 oils? I take a lot of vitamins but don't know what helps or doesn't...but this is so annoying and painful! I tend to pick at them and this make it all worse!

I talked to a friend of mine and she gave me an interesting suggestion. She said that I should use a little bit of hair conditioner on my hands. She said that it has a little bit of I think it was acid? that helps it absorb into the hair better and she says it absorbs into your skin better than regular lotion. I'm going to give it a try.
I'll let you know if it helps...

Let us know if you see an improvement...you know a lot of these products have vitamins and oils in them! Good idea!

I started using CeraVe Moisturizing Cream recently. It seems to be better than most of the others I have used. It takes just a dab... I work it into the backs of my hands and the nails as well as my forearms. The dermatologist gave a sample to me, and I found it for sale at Rite-Aid. I cannot use it on my face because it burns, though...but everything is bad for my face except Pond's Cold Cream.

You know Rite Aid also carries Burt's Bees...I need to just go and look around sometime...I am ususally not in the shopping mood anymore. :( Cheaper for Doyle!
I have tons of hand creams here and am too lazy to put it on! That's terrible to say, but true!

I sometimes put vaseline on my nails and cuticles while I am watching TV and just massage it in real good. (Oh those dishpan hands!!)

So far I think using conditioner on my hands has helped. It does seem to be absorbed much more than lotion and it doesn't feel slippery. The cuticles don't seem as dry. Nathan says he really likes how good my hands smell too.... hee hee.

Cute regarding Nathan!!
If any of you have curly hair, I have found a product that works so well for blow drying. I didn't wash my hair for a week to test it & it was still shiny & straight!! It's a Kerastase product called Oleo Relax. I have never had anything work so well. Also, when I want to leave my hair curly they have another product, Elasto-Curl that really keeps the definition without any hardness. It also controls the frizz.
My product endorsement for the day gdbV

The Burt's is good stuff. My sis works inthe health care feild and is always washing her hands and using sanitizer which leaves them dry and cracked and so on. She swears by Gold BOnd Healing lotion. I have tried it and have to say it is real good for dry skin. I had a really bad sun burn once and after a day or two of this, it did wonders for my damaged skin. Just a thought.

I have heard good things about Gold Bond products...have never tried them or Burt's Bees, but may in future. :)

I like Burt's Bees....mostly I use just the lip stuff.....regular 'chapstick' kind and then they have colored gloss which is moisturizing too.
in the past 2 weeks my skin has gotten some really dry spots.....usually this is the time of yr that it lets up.... Almost wondering if my thyroid might be off....but my levels have recently been done and my thyroid is very stable....
