Title: Glycemic index eating

NJO - September 25, 2006 04:24 PM (GMT)
I am thinking of trying to go onto the low glycemic way of eating. I am looking for good food ideas...

I think my metabolism is beginning to mend from all the extra steroids and maybe a very healthy eating plan would really help the weight loss. {htd}

Jo, it would certainly help w/ wt loss. Also, there is a book I loved yrs ago that always 'felt right' to me as a way of eating. It is Fit For Live by Diamond I think. They are proponents of proper food combining, the theory being that if certain foods are eaten together, like a meat and a potato for instance, they hinder each other's digestion. Food will not stay on one's stomach as long, and will digest better. I never really liked eating a meat and potato or rice at the same time...I like to eat a veggie and meat.....so it always sounded good to me. I kind of still loosely follow that although I do serve the 'traditional way' for my skinny teenager...needs all the carbs he can get!!!
Having your thyroid meds on target is also as you know very important....I still am urging you to make your doc test you.... :(

I did the food combining in about 2000-01 and it is hard for me to follow and it didn't seem to work for me but then I was on way too mcuh pred at the time...

....I liked it cause I love veggies and will pile on a big serving of veggies to fill me and try to eat a smaller size meat portion......I can eat alot! Always have liked to...Just doesn't work as well now as 20 yrs ago!!!

I think that you can't judge how you feel, or the diet, or upping meds and having a problem the same now at all as when you were on prednisone....try to think of it as a whole new thing......Not only were you on pred but you were on too much.....
I have upped every day I have gone to the center and also have been waking w/ 'the breathing thing' pretty often so I will take 2.5 if I am going to bed late enough, or often need it at 3 am.....
try not to compare so much the problems from the pred and diagnosis issues from how you are now....you have so much more knowledge to work with....

I like veggies too but when we eat out it's harder to get something other than a potato! I do think that if I tried really hard now that I could lose weight...as I am gradually losing without working too much. My body is going more into it's old form and I don't look like I'm on steroids now.

....you will get there w/ time and just even trying to eat better ...if it isn't all the time that is ok.....and I never really 'tried' hard enough....never enough consistent exercising at the same time as trying to cut down on servings (cause I definitely eat too much) and the carbs.

When I eat out, I always say no to the potato or rice and ask for double veggies instead...never been turned down. Also, a good trick that I read somewhere and do all the time if getting a full dinner is to ask for a 'to-go' container when the meal comes, put whatever I do not want to eat in the container...and set it aside. Then I really have to make an effort to get at the 'extra' food.....and dinners are always so 'super-sized' it is rare that one would ever really Need to eat all the serving in one sitting....
We haven't gone out much lately and when I do it is usually w/ a girlfriend....so we try to get a few appetizers and split them, and a salad...it is cheaper and just the rt amt of food.....

Diane, the food combining thing is the basis of the Somersizing by Suzanne Somers that I mentioned that I was trying.

I was not able to do it so I gave up. One of my problems with it was that you cannot combine protein or fats with carbs, which left out sandwiches of any kind as well as toast with margarine, which is my breakfast every morning (2 pieces of rye toast and a cup of tea).

One of the other points to this plan is not to drink right before or with your meal as it will dilute your digestive juices, thereby slowing digestion. That does makes sense to me.

I'm glad you are still doing your exercising. Keep up the good work.

Susanne, I will take a look at her book next time in barnes and noble...fit for life also said the part about not diluting the digestive juices but I don't remember the part about carbs and fat.....and it can be hard if you are a sandwich eater....but I do remember making alot of wraps w/ all my sauted veggies and that was ok on their plan.....

I think that's okay to have veggies and bread but no protein. If you have protein she uses lettuce for bread to make a wrap/sandwich.

Yeah that's rt. Or you can have the meat and lots of veggies or a salad w/ no croutons and that is good. I do think that even if one followed just those rules, tried to cut out bad carbs....like rice, pasta and white bread, and pay some attention to the low glycemic veggie thing and one would lose some wt and also, what I liked about food combining that way was I didn't feel bloated etc after eating.
Of course....it is fri and fri is pizza night here....it's a Rule!!
So I am eating my broccoli salad first hoping to fill up and not want too much pizza.....taking my enzymes etc.....can't really tell too much if it is helping but boy do I see a difference in not taking the protonix.....more burning in my chest than ever was before....wondering if there is a 'making more acid reaction' when going off a PPI......
Diane

I see a big difference in taking the enzymes...but you may take awhile to recoup from the PPI. Hope so...

I still have trouble eating certain veggies even with the enzymes. Ones I love ,too!

Dianne - October 7, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
...Jo, if they are veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, peppers......ck what the enzymes are in your brand.....some have different ones.....if it doesn't have the one that's in Beano.....then try some Beano w/your veggies....I find that helps....can't find my Beano bottle rt now....
geez....my purse is like a mix between a pharmacy and a health supplement store.....
Need to get a bigger one....I have gotten used to carrying my emergency kit in my bag...used to leave it out in the car....but my 'regular' purse doesn't fit it so I have stylishly been using a little backpack thing....never was much into matching purses to outfits...best I do is to try not to have one very obviously out of season....

I take the emzynes that Susanne takes...they are good, but I ate some cauliflower last week and oh, did my tummy hurt...but then I was having a lot of trouble anyway so that may have been part of the problem. I love broccoli, too...asparagas is another good for us veggie that's low carb...
