Description: Do 'they' not add to atmosphere??
ATFC Martin - January 31, 2007 07:47 PM (GMT)
'They' being flags....... B)
There was a small arguement/disagreement on our Aldershot messageboard regarding that our flags did not add to the match day atmosphere.
You may not have flags at your ground's because they're simply not allowed but do you think they actually add something to a match day atmosphere.
What we do at Aldershot can be found here - We don't do this every game but this match was different.
http://www.uptheshots.co.uk/2007/01/28/rba-vs-burton-albion/ There are photos and videos (mostly of the same thing but well worth a look!).
(It is my website and I'm not trying to spam, this is a genuine thread/question.)

Why does it matter if they add to the atmosphere or not?, were they saying that you shouldn't have them or that they didn't see the point. I think it adds to the colour but not atmosphere.
ATFC Martin - January 31, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
They didn't see the point because it doesn't do anything.
It doesn't really matter if they add to atmosphere but surely if they do add colour and somewhat atmosphere back into the game.
The colour has gone out of the English game and it needs to be brought back. So you agree that it adds colour which in a way (I can't really explain in words) goes to adding atmosphere.

I can't understand someone who would post about flags having no point are their lives so dull?
I agree flags and anything else that brings colour into a stadium is a good thing.

TBH I don't think us English have ever been too big on the "riot of colour" type stuff even in the old days, apart from for big matches, cup finals etc. The reversal of that stupid rule that says you can't bring in flags with sticks (because of course in 2007 the taking of ends still happens every week and flagpoles can be used to whack members of rival firms, lol) would be good but I'm not much fussed, all about the sing-song and funnies for me.

It's a shame really. A few weeks ago (I think BEFORE Christmas) Chelsea gave flags out to the home supporters for them to wave and it looked excellent! Likewise Newcastle and Brighton gave away scarves quite cheap for them to wave around as the players entered the pitch and these 2 things looked excellent and something that we, as the english, should have in our grounds.

Flags don't add much to the atmosphere but they do help colour the stadium. It's nice for the players when they come out and all they can see is a sea of colour.

It's good when you go to seating grounds and can cover up seats when we've only taken 30 fans to an away game!
We at Leigh football and rugby do have a few flags and like to use them home and away.

Leicester did a similar thing but the following week hardly anyone brought them back.
I remember leicester tigers playing a game in the walkers and virtually everyone had a flag it looked great on TV.
I don't understand some clubs not letting flags in.

I think it certainly adds to that atmosphere. It doesn't add to the noise levels directly but seeing a lot of flags with team names on them increases the feeling of belonging and can evoke more passion from the fans!

A bit late on this one but IMO yes, definitely. I seriously think having rows and rows of empty or half-empty seats in view can take the edge out of even the most passionate set of fans - they are just ugly and the more that can be covered the better.
They have to be home-made fan-inspired efforts though, e.g. the big Sheffield Wednesday flag at the lower tier away end of Hillsborough just looks official and crap.
ATFC Martin - February 7, 2007 06:33 PM (GMT)
Yep, I agree the ones that have been bought by clubs for the fans are pointless IMO - Not a big fan of Liverpools big one either.
Here's a home-made one - We have a supporter who makes the banners and flags for displays and colour....

I THINK THERE SHOULD BE MORE FLAGS
IN INGELAND, THEY HAVE SOME GREAT FLAGS IN EUROPE
Holmesdale Fanatics - March 6, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Without a doubt whenever we have flags or some kind of display in the Holmesdale, the crowd are whipped up slightly more and the atmosphere is better. Jsut makes the occassion seem more special and different than the players running out to 15,000 people in a bland stadium gawping back at them.
It's not jsut about the atmosphere however. For us, our flags are a show of pride in our team, our colours and our group. We are proud to be Palace fans and too often in this country people do not show enough pride in their club.
