Title: Boro V Man City

Amanda - May 11, 2008 08:00 PM (GMT)
I've heard about trouble at the Riverside today; the FSF are interested in finding out more about what actually happened.

If anybody has any links to websites that have details, please can you post them here.

If anybody wants to email me direct ajm22769@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks.

I've heard that city were ripping seats out at the end.

Saw a city fan today with just a number 8 on the back of his shirt!

You cannot make it up!

were simialar to the scenes we had at sunderland tbh,

seemed to be a huge effort to break the line of police on the edge of the pitch, i don't doubt seats were ripped out.

our little lap of honour was spoilt :(

oh how i hate our announcer! he described the lap of honour as if it were a kids birthday party or summit, shocking ffs!

Where did you hear that? Absolute tench.

I've already posted on the match day thread about this. Have since heard that the radio reported that a few City fans jumped the barrier onto the side of the pitch after Elano's goal and the next thing was police were laying into them with batons. And stretford ender yes, not surprisingly some fans tend to react to that kind of thing and a few seats got ripped out.

There's another thread on here about policing at the Riverside; no smoke without fire.

Amanda - will pm you if I get any more info.

From a Middlesbrough newspaper

"waves of City fans began jumping over barriers to reach the front of the stands to confront a double line of police and stewards".

"as a surge of Man City fans bore down on police lines following the Riverside visitors’ only goal".

Sensationalist journalism at its worst. There were 50 or so fans at the front already, they didn't surge down menacingly to attack police as this article makes it sound, and "waves" of fans jumping over barriers?? OK, if someone tried to remove a barrier to get access onto the pitch it's a bit naughty, as it is if a few got over the barrier, but as the article states it was to celebrate our goal (maybe a few fans deliberately going OTT with the celebrations as it was 7-0 at the time!) and a baton in the ribs may be a little unnecessary? As the article itself states, there was a party atmosphere throughout, it wasn't as if the mood was ugly. There were calls on the radio last night from a few fans who said the police were heavy handed. I'm not condoning a minority who take things too far, but I think what needs to be looked at is how the police handle certain situations, particularly as it appears to be an ongoing problem up there.

I've spoken to Ron, hopefully they'll do a follow up story tomorrow.

I've sent him a few quotes as well.

cityman - May 12, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
Just seen this in the Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main/jhtm...fnpolice112.xml

or if it takes you to the general football page, follow link "Police Attacked During Man City Thrashing"

There was no “pitch invasion” – in fact I didn't see a single fan on the pitch (a view backed up by comments on other City forums)

Also a quote from the editor of one of our fanzines at the end.

Looking at the expressions on the faces of the fans in the picture – aggressive and looking to attack the police, or sh*t-scared and looking to defend themselves?

The whole tone of the quote from the Superintendent is that it's big, bad football fans spoiling a fun-filled family day out. No mention at all of any force used by the police in his quote, no mention of the fact that City fans were good natured throughout despite a humiliating defeat, and no mention of the fact that it was City fans wanting to celebrate a goal, not cause trouble, that led to a few getting over the barrier/removing the barrier (but, of course, a mention that the pole could be used as a weapon, despite there being absolutely no indication as to why a group of fans in celebratory mood might want to use it as such).

As an aside, given that the Riverside is notorious as one of those places where you can't even belch out of turn without facing arrest, I'd like to know what the hell was a 4-foot long removable metal pole doing in the ground anyway!

Doesnt look too good for City. Good for us though as it may mean that we take the Uefa place due to the fair play league, as they were the only team above us

Amanda - May 12, 2008 08:29 PM (GMT)
Both the Manchester Evening News and the Middlesborough Gazatte will be covering this story from the fans perspective tomorrow.

ChingfordSpurs - May 13, 2008 02:45 PM (GMT)
A pal of mine got 3k compensation off of Cleveland Police after Spurs and Police clashed up there a few seasons back. We conceded 4 quick goals and most got up to leave to go back to a pub. OB wouldn't let us out and what started as pushing and shoving ended with a full scale punch up with the police getting chased out of the stand underneath. They then came in with snatch teams and got my mate on the floor and let a dog go on him when handcuffed. He had 18 puncture wounds and was covered in blood. This sent people mental and guttering bottles and anything to hand was used to force them out again. They said my mate hit a copper (he may have don't know) but mysteriously lost the video evidence afterwards as it clearly showed them hitting people with batons before it all started. In short they love a row up there and if you fight back they'll do whatever it takes. carps

"But Cleveland Police said the problems were sparked by the behaviour of City supporters who attacked police by throwing seats".

No. A few seats were thrown because of the actions of the police. So while it's not excusable, it is understandable.

Nice one Amanda and the FSF. Also credit to the paper for doing this, some wouldn't have.

"A spokesman for Middlesbrough FC said: “As a family club we are committed to working with our staff and the police to further improve the Riverside experience for all supporter"

Never been to The Riverside but from what I have heard and seen in photos of the place what experience? That word family is mentioned yet again.

I agree of course we do have some idiots which the police tar us all with the same brush because of them. But the Police come on they are only human and sometimes they are the most up for a ruck of them all.
