Title: Drinking On A Match Day
stretford ender - May 9, 2008 12:24 PM (GMT)
So how much do you all drink on an average home match and at an away game?
At a home game i normally drive so none, if i don't drive i'll definately have a good few pre game. Aways normally drink enough to be drunk before kick off.
BWA_Ultra - May 9, 2008 12:35 PM (GMT)
usually just a pint or two for a home game.
Away games depends on transport for instance sometimes I drive with others, if it is a train job or a long distance in the car we tend to drink quite a bit.
Blackcountry Villa - May 9, 2008 12:36 PM (GMT)
Home games - For 3pm kick offs i'm in the pub for 11, 5.15 games i go on an all day bender.
12.45 kick offs i usually just go straight in the ground for a drink and go to the pub after the game. For the Blues game, 12pm on a sunday i was in the pub at 8am.
Away games - Always get an early train and find a pub in the town centre about 3-4 hours before the game so plenty of drinking time, then drinking on the concourse, at half time, on the way home etc.
yorkiebarkid - May 9, 2008 12:59 PM (GMT)
Home - Tea
Away - Liver disease
tbh444 - May 9, 2008 01:19 PM (GMT)
Wouldn’t normally turn up to a game drunk, just one or two – it can be great for a while but then you gradually sober up and start to really notice how truly tench the football is!
However I had a few too many before the Charlton game on Sunday (like many others some cheap cans from an offie across the road from the Rose of Denmark due to a long wait at the bar) and am very glad I did, it somehow shortened that horror show on the pitch
albiontilidie - May 9, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
home- normally one or two pints unless im going down their to stay the night at a mates then might have a couple more
away- normally about 6 pints on average more if i go by train and if it on a saturday, midweek hardly ever drink at the games
AFC#1 - May 9, 2008 01:48 PM (GMT)
Don't really drink for home games, maybe a few pints.
Away games, just tend to get totally smashed, and tomorrow is no exception, bar at half 7 :D
hibs1875 - May 9, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)
All depends on the fixture. For the lesser games its usually just a couple. For the Derby or when the Old Firm come to town i'll be in the pub at opening time. Away games depend on how i'm travelling.
Just shows how different the cultures are between here and say Italy for example. When at the San Siro there was one pub near the ground and it was full of tourists, Brits, Irish and a few Danish, not an Italian in sight. In the ground you can get a pint and there was no ques at all, here, pubs are rammed before and after the match and trying to get a pint at halftime in England seems an impossible task.

Yet the atmosphere in Italy is far better than here which is strange as you would expect thousands of p!ssed up blokes to sing more than sober ones
Hodgson - May 9, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
On average 6-8 pints pre match home or away.
Although a 12.45 kick off would be less unless its a big game.
Joe Harvey took a holiday - May 9, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
Depends on kick-off time for home games how much I drink. Usually pop into the Sports Caf so have a pitcher and a couple of pints before going to the ground.
Away - Longer distance travelled more I tend to drink, unless the bus gets to the Pub with say 4-5 hours left to go.
nick the jack - May 9, 2008 04:14 PM (GMT)
I very rarely drink before a match. I had one shot before a home game last month and that is the only time I think I've ever drunk any alcohol before a game. All be it I have gone to a good few matches hungover. My mate had 6 or 7 on the way to Carlisle and he said that with it being a good atmosphere he got more into it, so I'll probably give it a go next season, but I do like to concentrate on the game and really see whats going on as well as singing.
AndrewFFC - May 9, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
Home- Usually a can or two before the game. If we win, a couple of pints in the pub after.
Away- About 3-4
LH_88 - May 9, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
Without wanting to sound like some kind of macho beer monster, I absolutely despise going to games sober.
As with most things in life, you tend to have more fun when extremely pissed.
L.T.F.C - May 9, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
Very rarely before home games despite only living 5 minutes away and not having the trouble of driving etc. Most often than not though do have some afterwards.
Have a few away.
On weeknight games never have done bar the one occasion when some friends of mine came up who supported our opposition that day.
Stoned_Prof - May 9, 2008 05:02 PM (GMT)
Don't usually drink at football, but I have the odd one or two on occasion.
pete - May 9, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
Never drink before home matches - no pubs near our ground and most of my mates dont go to football anymore (girlfriends and babies) I have only managed about 10 this season. I try and get a pint before away matches but only went to 5 this season. On Sunday we play Stockport at home at 6pm - straight after the Premier ship decider so I expect a lot of pissed up lads there after a few hours drinking
Blackcountry Villa - May 9, 2008 05:30 PM (GMT)
A right range on here! From bordering alcoholics to tea-totallers
nw7 yid - May 9, 2008 05:42 PM (GMT)
As much as I love my beer, I rarely (if ever) drink before or during home matches. When I've paid so much for a ticket, I want to be able to see and remember everything - I know so many people who can barely remember any of this season due to being too pissed. Also I go with my old man who doesn't really drink.
Away games I'll always have three or four before the match - mainly because I love the camaraderie in the 'away pubs'.
purpleronnie - May 9, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)
I used to inside the ground, anyone know if you can still buy alcohol at the walkers?
red_rose - May 9, 2008 06:45 PM (GMT)
Agree with LH, going to the football sober is tenche an I rarely do it. usually in pub by 12 for home games, away games a lot!!.
JTsBlueArmy - May 9, 2008 06:52 PM (GMT)
Home - About 4 pints
Away - Fair few cans on the way with a fair few pints in the pub
LongtonLeeds - May 9, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Home - leave stoke at 10am with 4 cans for the journey. Go in the bars around the ground for 3 or 4 pints and then another 4 cans on the way home from the local corner shop
Away - depends how far we travel and how. For the mini-bus due to my weak bladder i try to have just 3 but always end up with 6 and need numerous piss stops. When there ill have afew in whatever pub we go and then depending on time and how we all feel stop for afew more on the way back. On then train then its another 4 on the way and 4 on the way back
Im getting proud of my developing belly thats for sure but we need it. Leicester fans beware...mental alcoholics you are about to become  :D
AFC#1 - May 9, 2008 07:17 PM (GMT)
What do yous drink then? Just beer?
We always take bottles of vod for the buses. Then pints in the bar or a carry out...
LongtonLeeds - May 9, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
Just lager for me. Fosters cans on train or bus and whichever they have in the pubs/bars. At leeds its carlsberg which wins the day for me
Cant stand anything else. On nights our shots get to me after downing 1...i struggle with 2 and then the smell of everything else just makes me give it a no no

When I do drink, yes. Usually Guinness at the football. Football clubs don't tend to do a wide selection of ales, and I only drink lager when it's hot (the climate I mean, not the lager!).
AFC#1 - May 9, 2008 08:19 PM (GMT)
Don't know what the law is like in England, but up here it's illegal to drink alcohol on buses. I don't understand it to be honest. you can drink on trains, aeroplanes and in cars (if your not driving ;)) but not on buses. So on the way down on the supporters buses there's the unwritten rule of no tins or bottles and you've just got to take 'coke' bottles ;) as a few have got done for having drink on board in the passed.Your fine on the way home though.
BHB - May 9, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
I've calmed down a lot the last few years.
Between the age of 16 and 24 I don't think I went into a ground sober. I remember going out all night on a Friday, ordered a "dial-a-crate" at 5am and got on the coach to West Ham with 24 cold bottles of stella. I drank the lot before we got there. Fell asleep standing up in some social club under this bridge, I'd never find it again. I then somehow got home, via taking in the game, I think.
That used to be a regular occurance. Used to have a ball though. Far better being smashed before the game. Enjoy it more. Even though you don't remember it afterwards. I used to have to watch every game back the next day to find out what happened.
Now, I'll drive to half the home games so don't bother. Otherwise, it's 6 or 7 pints before, 2 at half time then countless afterwards until I stumble home.
Going the match is far more than just going the match. It'll make sense to most.

BHB, long time no see mate!!! :D
I've had to look back the next day on games to see whats happened 1-2 times. But I'd agree theres more about the day than just the match, especially for away games.
Gunner Mike - May 10, 2008 12:16 AM (GMT)
Home games tend to only have 2-3 pints before, refuse to pay £3.50 for a warm pint of fosters at half time. Though middlesbrough home this year, what with it being a 5.15 kO, we decided to make a day of it. Didn't realise we had a goal disallowed in the first half, and couldn't remember what the sending off was for til i watched the highlights. Oh and i missed our goal due to being in the toilets
Away usually 5-6 and 1 or 2 at half time. Does depend on the distance to travel. Looking forward to sunderland this weekend
Lawnmower Man - May 10, 2008 01:28 AM (GMT)
With Saints its 2-4 pints at home or away, every once in a while I'll get a bit squiffy (for some reason I ended up getting really ratarsed at Barnsley (h) last season, was alright but I kept having to go for a piss and ended up missing most of the goals in a 5-2 win...) but not that often.
Was never really feasible for me to get into the whole beer monster thing, as I was a) an out-of-towner and (b ) started going with my parents rather than mates, Southampton supporters being kind of thin on the ground in Maidstone.
Seeing as I drive to Maiders games in Sittingbourne/away I generally don't drink there. Looking forward to some all-dayers in town when the new ground arrives thou' B)

I'd be over the moon if it was announced in July that all Liverpool games will kick off at 5.15pm this season....
The missus and the bank manager wouldn't be too impressed though. Nor my liver.
The first ever 5.15pm kick off we had was Newcastle at home in the FA Cup about 5 years ago. I've never seen Anfield so pissed. Seemed like everyone in the city had been out since 12 o clock. It was a novelty.
FA Cup semi final at Old Trafford against Chelsea was the same. 5.15pm kick off on a Saturday and we were all over Manchester City Centre all day, pubs around Oxford Road all rammed by 12 o clock. What a day that was.
It's illegal to enter a football stadium intoxicated you know.....

Was that game 2-1 to you lot, we had thousands down and that salmon cheroo or whoever scored both for you?
watermelon man - May 10, 2008 11:17 AM (GMT)
For home games I usually drive. If not driving I'll have a few after the game!
For away games depends on method of transport.

Dont think so mate, everyone on here sounds like an alcoholic apart from me. I can see the attraction in having a few before the game to get your head spinning a bit and probably get into the atmosphere a bit more. But why would anyone pay so much and travel so far to then be at the game struggling to stay awake practically unaware of whats going on?
Just curious, I dont understand

Drinking before (and after) games is for me, more of a social thing where you get a bit typsy, have a laugh with lads, catch up with people and maybe have a sing song closer to kick off - depending where I am. Its not really for the sole purpose of getting drunk.
There was one time last season though against pompey in the cup when it was 5.15 kick off which I was in the pub for half 11 and I had too much to remember really much of the game after. But never been that bad since.
Normally I would say I'm no more than the typsy/chilled stage.

More water than beer last time I had one, the bottom was literally clear.
If I drive, I don't drink at all, but usually I have about three or so if I don't, nothing crazy - bit of enjoyment without being completely wasted, tipsy at most. Don't see the fun in being completely out of it. Don't tend to bother drinking at half time, cause its just too much hassle.
nw7 yid - May 11, 2008 01:42 AM (GMT)
Another reason that I tend not to drink much at football is the fact that I guarantee I'll be bursting for a piss the entire match.

One of the fellas with us slept through the entire European Cup Final in Athens.
He fell asleep about an hour before the game standing up. More and more coming in, the end getting overcrowded and every row squashed in. He then passes out and sit him on the seat with me standing over him standing on the seat, legs straddled either side, then others standing infront of the seat on the floor. Chaos.
Yet he slept through the whole lot he was that p1ssed. Struggled to wake him up at the end when we were getting off. He then went back on the ale
