Title: Pre-season Friendlies

unibee - May 9, 2008 12:08 PM (GMT)
Are you a fan of them? Do you see them as just a training session and a waste of time in terms of a spectacle, or something you really enjoy.

Personally, I think it's one of the most enjoyable times of the season. The first football for a couple of months, sun's unsually out, there's no stress about the results and there is the chance to go to a few non-league grounds you don't normally get to.

AFC#1 - May 9, 2008 12:15 PM (GMT)
They're tench. Tours would be alright though, never done one though, our is in Holland this year which would be good. Last year was Egypt  and the year before was South Africa.
Summer football would be better.
We never normally have home pre season games, but think we're playing Man United in July. I'll probably GO because it's part of the 25th Anniversary of winning the ECWC...sentimental reasons...I'd imagine Ronaldo and that won't be playing cos of Euro 08, but Rooney and that might come up

stretford ender - May 9, 2008 12:16 PM (GMT)
Never going to a home pre season friendly ever again after i went to the sevilla home game 2 years ago.

Not actually been to an away, might do this year depends who and where its at.

Blackcountry Villa - May 9, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
I like the away ones as it gives me a chance to visit lower league grounds. We play Walsall away every year which is always a good laugh and we take over the ground, also been to the likes of Hull, Stoke, Wycombe etc. in the past few years.

We had Inter Milan at home last year, our first home friendly in over 10 years, we beat them 3-0, there was a big crowd and a great atmosphere so that was good. I've heard rumours we might be playing Celtic at VP this summer, nothing confirmed though.

This year we might very well be in the Intertoto cup meaning we'd have to play those games instead of friendlies which would be better imo, more competitive and we'll get to visit some sh!tty little foreign towns and grounds.
'follow follow follow we're goin for Intertoto

BWA_Ultra - May 9, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
Away PSF are good as we play non-league clubs, proper traditional football!

Reppz - May 9, 2008 03:22 PM (GMT)
we've got nuneaton awa again this year. Might go but last year just seemed a bunch of pissed-up twats going for a fight. Doubt they seen a full minute of action....

albiontilidie - May 9, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
cant watch that video but is it the one where they got their tops of and everything?

we got walsall away and also take a good number took 3000 last time or something, i only got to one or two aways if aint been to the ground before, did walsall and northampton last year

nick the jack - May 9, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
We're going on a tour of Sweden and Spain this summer. Then have a couple of friendlies over here like Chester away and a few Welsh league teams and home to Den Haag (because we have a player link with them).

The home ones I'm happy to sit down at with a good view so I can check out the new players. The away ones I cant be bothered with much because the league ones are a long way away and the local ones usually have our lesser players.

Its nice with the sun out and relaxing, but its amazing how as soon as football gets competitive it becomes 100 times better.

I remember we beat Basle in the final in front of a 40,000 crowd at VP  At the end our players were all too embarassed to lift the cup as it was about the same size as an Egg cup

john_lcfc - May 9, 2008 05:14 PM (GMT)
we're playing hinkcley 9conference north) and kettering (conference prem) and quorn (unibond south div 1) so far. I fancy them all....proper quality lower league grounds. :D

We had a game agaisnt celtic when O'Neil was still in charge, then he left and the fixture was kind of a nothing as it was billed as his return!

I recon he'll sort something out for you.

Anyway we've got Quorn which was quality last year, more smoke bombs please! :D

The Danish team has to beat the winner of A Match from a team from Northern Ireland and Finland though.

Prefer Denmark!

2 games & ure in UEFA cup as well

hibs1875 - May 9, 2008 08:52 PM (GMT)
I like them. Gives a chance to see new players and also a chance to see new places. Lately we've had pish ones though, Bolton, Boro and Cardiff, they brought about 1000 fans between them if your lucky. A few year back we had Leeds, that was good as was Sunderland when they visited. Our last one does south was Preston away but that was about 4 year ago, there was a bit trouble at that and I don't think the club has accepted an invite since. The tour of Ireland was cracking, we had over 1000 fans at every match. This year we're also in the Intertoto, 1st round is looking like a trip to Sweden then if we progress its a trip to Ireland or Wales so that should be good!

BHB - May 9, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)
I love them if they're lower league away grounds I haven't been to before.

But the last few years it's been Crewe and Wrexham away, so good day out on the ale and don't even bother going the game. Sit in the beer garden, and those that do go in are all back out and in the pub at half time anyway. Pointless.

One of the best trips I've ever done was to Cologne for a pre-season friendly. 8 of us went, via a few nights in Brussels. Hardly anyone made the trip, so no massive police presence, no hassle with thousands of other fans being there. Could just stroll around where we wanted all day and night. Loved it.

Home ones are pointless though. Good job we never have them

I know yeah, we will actually need Blues to get a result against you if we're losing.

As someone else said it's either a team from Northern Ireland, Denmark or Finland, i will probably go to any of the away games anyway but we would take thousands over to Ireland

We usually play one or two sides from the League of Wales as well as our Champions League first qualifying round tie. I'd love to get through a qualifing round of two of that this year but I'd settle for just being competitive over the tie. We're screwed if we draw Dynamo Zagreb or Gothenburg though.

NMFinest/FulhamFC - May 16, 2008 08:59 AM (GMT)
Yeh I love the freindlies. Always have a good laugh and go to grounds which I havnt been to before, because they are lower league. Always look forward to the announcements

Ryan - May 16, 2008 09:29 AM (GMT)
They're gash I never go to them.

£25 to watch our reserves against Doncaster/Peterborough last season? :/

I'll go to the Charity Shield and maybe the Super Cup in Monaco if we win on Wednesday.

Same here. There was some bother when we were down in Bradford 5 or 6 years ago and in Hartlepool before that and think we're banned or something.

Home friendlies are a money-spinning waste of time. Away friendlies are okay, particularly if we visit smaller towns where there is a reasonably large contingent of Tottenham fans who don't get to see their team in the flesh that often.

I don't think I'll ever go to a friendly again. My old man used to take me to friendlies when I was a kid, and I don't really understand why - for a few quid extra, he could have taken me to a proper game...

NMFinest/FulhamFC - May 17, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
Gillingham away may be on the cards for us! Bad news trouble wise, as this is where one of our "chaps" was killed 10 years ago after a game, therefore I suspect the lads will be out in force if the game does go ahead

Could be worse; the Oval at Glentoran's a really interesting ground, very similar to Springfield Park, Wigan's old ground. I'm going there, to Brighton and to Brentford.

Aye m8. Hertz away is £33.

Tell you what, we're only a bawhair away from English Premiership prices. Celtic away last week was £27, Ibrox was £26, even Dundee Utd are £25. Hibs next season will be charging Celtic, Rangers and Hearts £27 with NO concessions! Time we add our tenchey wee 'booking' fee your talking almost 30 bucks for a few games!

Scary considering how tenche the football up here actually is. £25 to watch Ross Tokley and co :o :D
