Title: Fa Protest And Barnet Safe Standing Day
Description: Plans etc.

New thread to get it organised in, might be better off stickied if enough interest is shown.

Hello,

Yeah don't bother with Arsenal, the tickets are stupidly expensive.

The club are doing a buy one, get one free scheme for the Leeds and Watford friendlies.  Prices are £15 for adults and £7 for consessions for the 2 matches.  Probably not the best news for you lot because it's unlikely that if you have far to travel that you want to go to both.

We have the North and Northwest terraces (uncovered) and the east terrace (covered).  It's a good idea to combine one of these games with a protest outside FA headquarters!

To get there, just get a train anywhere into London and then get the tube up to High Barnet (northern line) and the ground is 2 mins walk away (with a pub called the Old Red Lion en route).

I think this is a great idea!  All we need is to decide which game suits everyone best and see how many are actually interested and then we are sorted!

So I urge all London and the surrounding areas based posters to consider this and get a hell of a crowd together outside the offices before getting the tube across to Underhill. Probably won't be able to attend myself but thought that it might be easier if someone made a topic for it. Also could people who will be going decide on a freindly so that this can be organised.

Amanda - May 2, 2008 06:55 PM (GMT)
What are the dates?

This could possibly have some potential...

Reppz - May 2, 2008 07:04 PM (GMT)
Would definetely be interested if something was organised..

watermelon man - May 2, 2008 11:13 PM (GMT)
Dates are 26th July for Leeds and 2nd August for Watford.

I'm going to both as I am a bees fan. It is a bit annoying that it's buy one get one free instead of half price tickets, if it was halfprice instead, the northerers will be more likely to want to come along!

Anyway, let us know which date (or dates) suit people best and lets get this show on the road!!! May I suggest Leeds just because there will be more northern interest and also more national interest because Leeds are a bigger club!

Edit... If there is enough interest, I might see if the club will do halfprice tickets just for us lot. It probably won't happen but it's worth a try!

Cowbacon - May 3, 2008 02:14 AM (GMT)
Surely you can line up some part-timers for us to go halves with? :D

While a Safe Standing day a little more central would be preferable to me, combining them into one does make some sense as it means theres more appeal than simply holding a banner outside some offices for a bit. How many in numbers would this actually take to be noteworthy, though? I mean, I'd be as interested any anyone else on here in protests (as long as its not on my Mum's birthday!), but surely the idea is to be of a substantial size rather than just 20 crazies with a big flag?

Ched - May 3, 2008 09:21 AM (GMT)
Definitely up for this.

shrenchel - May 3, 2008 10:49 AM (GMT)
Definitely up for this.
Hopefully might get a fair bit of press coverage what with it being in the close season.

You can prolly find a few lads round your way who we can flog the tickets for the other match to for a few quid, no?

nw7 yid - May 3, 2008 11:26 AM (GMT)
I'm about and up for this.

L.T.F.C - May 3, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Wouldn't mind going. Not that far as well. IT WOULD HAVE TO BE THE 26TH JULY THOUGH. . ;)

nick the jack - May 4, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a great idea. We were lucky with the timing of Wycombe last year. With this being in the summer we wont miss our own team and SKY wont have much to talk about.

Either date would be fine for me. Just if it was Leeds I'd fear there could be trouble. So maybe Watford is best.

jackarmy - May 4, 2008 07:59 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a brilliant idea, Id be up for it.

Nick, would you go up on Train?

chalky - May 4, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
Good work lads and lasses, would have liked to attend something like this if it could be done in a way to attract some good publicity for the campaign but won't be able to attend :(

The Busby Boy - May 4, 2008 08:36 PM (GMT)
I will go, boths games or just leeds or watford

jm26 - May 4, 2008 11:49 PM (GMT)
I'd go, and could get a few others too.

JTsBlueArmy - May 5, 2008 06:46 AM (GMT)
I'd probably go as I was thinking of going the Barnet Leeds game anyway with LongtonLeeds

Amanda - May 5, 2008 09:41 AM (GMT)
This seems to be taking off nicely!

I'll speak to Chris and see if he can speak to Barnet.

The day at Wycombe last year got over 100 fans so if we're going to get the same again, it would be nice to give Barnet some warning!

I doubt that will happen. We don't have anything against Leeds. Only Sullivan and Elding. And Sullivan isn't there anymore!

pete - May 5, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
Yes well up for it. With no home nations in the Euros it could well have some publicity

RobT - May 5, 2008 03:57 PM (GMT)
Be good to mention the IFC report. I'd hoped that would have been pushed more widely this week.

Lawnmower Man - May 5, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm down.

Rob

Way too much going on elsewhere for the IFC Report to be discussed, unfortunately!

Still, we've weeks ahead of us when sports writers will be grateful for something to write about, so we need to get things like this proposal organised plus one or two other matters.

LongtonLeeds - May 6, 2008 12:01 PM (GMT)
For the leeds game you could easily get 2,000 leeds fans at that game simply because of the london factor and as you all know we all stand (although if you give us seats we hardly do pre-season unless you go to the back of the stand with fellow standers...thats only for pre-seasons though) so would join most things.

BWA_Ultra - May 6, 2008 12:27 PM (GMT)
Not great dates for me, but I will have a word with some of the others!

Nick, would you go up on Train?

I'd either go on the train. Or I might try and contact Vince at Cardiff to see if we can get as many people together as possible.

I know a few of my mates would go and if we try and get other people as well plus a few from Cardiff with Vince we might be able to get a mini bus. Dont know who would drive it but if this happens I could contact Vince and we could see how many we could get together from the 2 clubs.

nick the jack - May 6, 2008 05:13 PM (GMT)
How likely is this protest?

We will need to have it really well planned, we have all summer, theres no reason why we cant make this a big event. As I said above I'm confident I might be able to get a mini bus sorted from Swansea and Cardiff. Theres nothing stopping us from having 500 people there.

There is no segregation at pre season games at Underhill so you don't need to worry about getting seats or terrace tickets or anything. Just turn up on the day, pay your money at the turnstile (east terrace) and walk in.

I bet you any money there will be some Leeds fans sitting down. With the option of a terrace, most of the Leeds fans will be able to stand. However, I think there may be a few Leeds fans who only stand at aways because everyone else does.

Cowbacon - May 6, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
I would be up for this and would be able to offer lifts from uhhh, dunno yet (most likely either Leicestershire down, Basingstoke up).

Of course, I own a huge mansion so there's space for everyone :o)

Interesting idea. I think a protest at FA HQ (or perhaps the DCMS/FLA) has potential. Followed by a trip to a game where the choice is to stand or sit, as at Underhill. A few random thoughts:

1. I believe demo's/protests would need to inform police, per laws in this country. Therefore would need proper planning.

2. You'd all be welcome at Underhill.

In terms of game selection, one of the main reasons we picked Wycombe - Brentford last year was the support we had from Wycombe. With Barnet, it's a bit more complicated, the club have shied away from the topic and seeing as we have a ground with terraces, issues like those of standing in seated areas/stewarding have not really emerged at home games. A second thought is that the Wycombe game was on Sky so there was potential for some decent media coverage (albeit it didn't work like that), whereas Barnet - Leeds is a run of the mill pre-season game.

I wonder if it might not be better to pick a game where the host club is more enthusiastic (eg. an AFC Wimbledon v FC United) or perhaps somewhere like Dartford - a new ground with terraces.

3. Pre-season games at Underhill (apart from Arsenal) generally only have the west, and maybe south sides of the ground open - certainly was the case last year when we played Crystal Palace. This is mostly seating with just a small terrace in the NW corner.

Gillsmad - May 6, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
I would definately be up for this, depending on work commitments. Hopefully if anything gets organised it could be on a Sunday and not around exam time, but I would hope to attend otherwise :)

JonathanO NUFC - May 6, 2008 11:02 PM (GMT)
well done doby lad

Sheriffsam - May 7, 2008 10:46 AM (GMT)
Me Chris could mention it at the next BFC supporters association meeting on monday and maybe through that try and organise to speak to the chairman. He likes his money this fella so if we say that loads of extra tickets will be sold he may just go into a moneydriven stupour and agree to open the whole ground etc.

Could you contact the club and try and get a meeting with them. I'd have thought they might change their mind if they knew there might be an extra couple of hundred on the gate.

Also we were very lucky with how Wycombe fell last year. On a Sunday when no one else was playing and on SKY. We're unlikely to get that again. If we did it at a non league club I think it would just be ignored. SKY often go around the grounds on pre season Saturday's and theres no reason why they cant interview us when they go to Barnet V Watford.

I really think this is our best hope. The non league wouldn't draw as much attention and a boring summer Saturday is the perfect time for people to make the effort to go to Barnet.

unibee - May 7, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
There's certainly something there Nick. Of course pre-season for these events has the advantages of a lack of news to fill the back pages, together with a lack of football so people are more willing to travel as they aren't missing their own teams games. And of course Barnet is easy to get to, which was one problem with Wycombe on a Sunday lunchtime.

I'll have a word with Sam and one or two others and come back on it.

Chris

Yeah I know what you mean Chris about TK not being a fan of this topic. It's probably because of our recent ground problems and the club not wanting to get in the bad books of the league.

Last time we played Watford in a friendly (about 8 years ago) the whole ground was open and it was pretty full (about 3,000). I think the attendance for Leeds will be about the same as well because of the buy one get one free thing and also Leeds fans do like their travelling. This should ensure the east terrace is opened.

Even if it's not, there is still the North West terrace!

nw7 yid - May 8, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
Good points, Nick.

I reckon the local papers will like this story.

unibee - May 8, 2008 01:55 PM (GMT)
To pick up with WM's comments, I think it's unlikely that Barnet would promote a day like this. Underhill doesn't meet FL regs, still, although we're closer. For some time the slope was steeper than that allowed by FL rules - though the rules were then amended just for us :o) The floodlights aren't compliant, though new ones are due in the summer. Also, they were reportedly not very happy at the lack of any away seating option, though this is now sorted.

This said, I don't think the club would be hostile to such an event in the way others might be. Also unlike some, I'd say the club were quite fan friendly and are generally happy with people have flags/banners etc.
