Title: Where There Is Choice How Many Stand?

Peter SUSD - April 27, 2008 02:43 PM (GMT)
Unibee's report on Barnet v Stockport suggested that only around 15% of Stockport's following chose to sit.

I know there's other examples of away fans having choice of terrace & seats at similar price and the majority choosing to sit.

It would be a good idea to collate examples of this as evidence that given choise many fans wish to stand (despite what the FLA have tried to claim).

Barnet 2-1 Stockport

Attendance: 3,074 (about 1/2 were from Stockport)

Standing: As a large away crowd was expected, Stockport were allocated half the East Terrace and the whole North Terrace, but only 240 seats. They had 1,500 odd but still didn't fill the seats. Is there a message here? There was not one person stood in seated areas.

I dont think this is measurable sorry mate.

For example all Leeds stand away, but I doubt everyone wants to stand. I think a lot of people might want to stand, but are surrounded by people who want to sit.

At a guess I reckon about 20% of fans would want to stand, just currently its difficult to tell. Lets not forget some people who prefer to stand have been told for the last 15 years to sit and have had it drummed into them.

All I will say is that I think the FLA would have a surprise if they knew how many people wanted to stand

There are different factors in this. While only about 20% of some teams fans in the top couple of league choose to stand I think that would be a lot higher if stadiums were not all seated. At Barnet we have some decent terracing areas and thats a factor. I'm sure 1,200 county fans don't persistantly stand at Edgeley Park.

Also views may have something to do with it. Barnets new south stand is proving quite popular and some of our fans who used to stand on the east terrace now sit in the south stand. However, the only argument that is ever used is that the view of the match is pretty poor from the east terrace (which is true, I couldn't see about 25% of the pitch yesterday). Compare that to Burtons brand new Pirelli stadium where the views from the terraced areas are fantastic and you can actually see the whole of the game. Only about 25% of Burtons fans choose to sit at home games!

At Ninian Park away fans get a choice and there are always about twice as many fans that stand than sit.

This is something it would be good to have firm info on.

Maidstone United:

At an average home game, I'd say between 20% and 30% sit. Away, I'd say between 10% and 20% sit. These figures are for the total crowd, not just our fans.

stand

I dont get what you mean by that really

What I mean is how many stand when there is choice of terrace & seats & neither is full. This must be a true measure of choice.

Of course in all seated grounds there are some who have to stand because others do in front, but would prefer to sit, but where there is choice, numbers going for each area should reflect proportion who prefer to stand.

When we (Bristol City) played away to Cardiff this season we sold out our allocation. Yet there were many empty seats at the front indicating that many more people preferred to stand.

Went we went away to Peterborough about 10 of our fans chose to sit with the other 400 choosing to stand. So thats about 95%ish (can't be bothered with the maths right now).

However, at home games it's a more even 50/50 split with Barnet fans between sitting and standing.

for the game on saturday Darlington have sold 400 tickets. EVERY SINGLE ONE in the terrace, they had a choice between the terrace and the main stand and the terrace it was. Posh have now removed the option for them to sit so LR will be Poshies on three sides for the first time in a ages

leedskopender - April 28, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
swansea away people had the choice to sit as there were a bout 500 seats left id say bout 10 poeple sat

unibee - April 28, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
As WM says, there are plenty of factors here, such as relative prices, views etc. A lot of people are probably fairly indifferent, for example at Barnet some people recently switched from terraces to the new SS, even though the terraces are still there.

In terms of the options for Stockport supporters at Underhill, the covered standing (where most went) was £15, covered seating £16, so hardly a big difference. The away attendance was given as 993, so still that's only about 20% sitting despite minor price differences.

I notice also at away games (given the choice) nearly everyone stands whereas at home it's more split.

What I was trying to get at, before getting distracted and decieding to talk rubbish, was that I dont think we know how many people would stand/sit if they were given the simple question.

As people have said the amount who want to sit changes depending on where you are. I dont know why but as said a lot of people dont seem to mind really.

At FC v Bluestar

500/530FC stood, even the FC board that chose seats didn't stay seated all game or not have a laugh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r0JqgDgUA8&feature=related.

Well at home games 3,000 (60%) stand and 2,000 (40%) sit but this is due to having more terracing than seats.

At our new ground I feel only about 5-10% will stand as it is against ground regs.

I feel about 30-40% would prefer to stand at home games given the choice.

At away games approx 25% stand against regulations, if we are in a terrace about 80% would stand. I think given unlimited choice about 60-70% of our away fans would stand.
