I'm off work today but apparently they're having a St George's Day themed lunch today in the canteen.....and I live in Ireland. Don't see why there's opposition to celebrating it. Make it a national holiday (like they do for St Patrick's Day here) and everyone will celebrate it then (ie - get wasted drunk because they have a day off work).

Gunner Michael - April 23, 2008 11:36 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but as mentioned, it's racist and disrespectful to the ethnic minorities that live here, whom we go out of our way for so they can celebrate their festivals and occasions.

I find it funny that St Paddys day is huge here yet you hear nothing of St Georges. What a country.

Used to be like that in Luton with is high ethnic and Irish population. A huge party for St Patrick's but eff all for St Georges but now its how it is should be and St Georges is started to get the respect it deserves.

As for it upsetting ethnics I don't know where they got that one from they are more than welcome to join in if they wish(which many do). If they don't like it on the other hand (which I daresay some sad bitter buggars do) they know where the airport is.

But that brings us back onto the PC ideals foistered upon us by this bollocks government that we've managed to re-elect for three terms. As you say, the overwhelming majority really don't care but the government just try to ban these things anyway, like the flying of a St Georges flag during World Cups in some areas.

Yes to much of this PC and health and safety crap about (one of the reasons why a site like SUSD has come about).

It tends to be the left-wing councils who try to stop the celebration of St Georges Day, preferring instead to promote minority cultures and their respective days. Yet St Georges Day is becoming a bigger event and celebrated more and more each year.

Id like to wish everyone a Happy St Georges Day :D

Ill be celebrating quietly and with a visit to one of our greatest gifts to the world, The Pub!

Have a good day everyone!

What's everyone on here upto then?

Full English breakfast for me in a bit, then off to the pub for some beers (strictly bombardier today). Fish and Chips for dinner I reckon, then go out and get lashed.

BWA_Ultra - April 23, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)

Bollocks.

I've never seen anything saying we can't celebrate it (Apart from in the sun  ) it's just most people are miserable and have the same attitude as you.

The reason why Paddys day is so big(outside of Ireland) is thanks to the Guinness marketing department.

Who though has ever heard from someone first hand that they are offended by St George's day/Xmas etc etc?

Its a load of bollocks.

Lawnmower Man - April 24, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
The modern purpose of St. George's Day is simply to allow people to feel sorry for themselves and do a great deal of lamenting about how imaginary enemies "won't let them show their national pride" etc. People don't realise that the moaning about how no-one celebrates St. George's Day is the celebrations. If anyone actually organised a parade or something like that, everyone would just sneer and go back to doing nothing.

Nevertheless, hope everyone had a good one. I would have gone out for an ale (not Bombardier, probably London Pride) but it was a work week so I was working/driving/sleeping.

I agree 100%.

Everyone says "We aren't allowed to celebrate St Georges Day anymore" because it conveniently fits in with the general apathy that most people feel about it.

I agree that it's getting bigger than it used to (I was born and bred in devon and no one had any interest whatsoever except for a cub scouts parade).

You can celebrate what you damn well like. Take a day off work, arrange a night out with your friends, fly the flag, start a campaign to rally support, do as you like. You can celebrate St Georges day, and it's the usual apathy of the English/British people that prevents it being a big thing, even if some would like to blame it on 'ethnics' or 'loony left councils' or whatever.

If it means that much to people then you won't mind booking a days holiday to celebrate it. Thats what some people do in Wales because St davids day isn't a national holiday either.
