Title: Flares

albiontilidie - April 17, 2008 08:44 AM (GMT)
Massive debate on flares on the albion forum as we had one thrown on the pitch against the scum on tuesday saying for or against it all

what you stand on this

jonboilfc - April 17, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
definately for, think they look awsome and makes the ground much more intimidating

James - April 17, 2008 08:51 AM (GMT)
Flares look great, but they need to be used sensibly, or else it just adds fuel to the argument against them. Why throw it on the pitch?

zueri - April 17, 2008 08:52 AM (GMT)
I like them as well

But if you're in a ground with two tiers make sure you're in the upper tier when they set the flares on fire!!

Tufty - April 17, 2008 08:52 AM (GMT)
Every time ive been to albion the locals have had flares, must be that Noddy Holder influence!

its the first time in long time ive seen a flare at the albion, probs cause a lot that went on tuesday were a different set of fans to normal.

We have flares now and again.

Had some in Ukraine set off by the casuals I think (cue massive outrage in local press  ) and some in Munich, this time by the ultras I think. And shed loads in Dublin for a friendly...Youtube

I like them, think they look mint but there's a problem when others who don't like them are near by. My dad was right next to the one in Munich and got cinders all over his jacket and little burns on his top...not good like.

*whoosh*

yorkiebarkid - April 17, 2008 10:08 AM (GMT)
Red Hot, choking fumes realise you look like a spanner with every cctv camera in the ground on you after about 2 seconds

I can see why they are popular

purpleronnie - April 17, 2008 12:10 PM (GMT)
I thought it was a green smoke bomb?

it was green, aint sure flare or smoke bomb it was one of them, everyone been calling it flare,

it smelled and was green and guy got arrested that all i no

Reppz - April 17, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
Never been a fan of flares or smoke bombs and thankfully i've only ever seen one at a match about 5 years ago.

hibs1875 - April 17, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
Both look great! Plus they are major way off giving the two fingers to the authorities.

Its funny as hell when they get let off in Britian. The sheer hysteria of it. I mind Sky Sports news had a huge chunk of there programme on the Millwill flare at Luton then when you look at the Italian, Dutch and French leagues etc they actaully have sand buckets/hoses and employ on the trackside to deal with flares that go near the pitch.

Lawnmower Man - April 17, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
It really bugs me when people call smoke bombs flares. And yes, I know there's far more important things to worry about.

They look nice and all, but I can take or leave them really.

ML - ITFC - April 17, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
Not really overly bothered by them really, espcailly the smoke that comes off them, but they do look good when the masses use them on the continent but just look pathetic over here.

BHB - April 17, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
I think they're brilliant, for the right occasion. Used to have loads at anfield on the kop. Not seen one for 5 years or so, be charged and banned within minutes. I had loads in istanbul, loads of photos of me with them, even got one framed!

purpleronnie - April 17, 2008 06:24 PM (GMT)
They are common place here in the US, most fans like them they see it as adding colour making a party celebratory atmosphere, in england they dont see it that way.

I think its more to do with fans being arrested and given a lifetime ban from all grounds if they light a flare in the ground more than not liking them.

piesandsalad - April 17, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
I've only seen them twice at Argyle and not since the old terrace pre 2001.

Thought it was awesome, especially the green one that went off for an evening game that just filled the whole place and was great.

A sizeable part of US "sawkerr" fans are Mexican-Americans I believe.

True but still most of those pictures were Italian...

purpleronnie - April 18, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
I never stated the pics were from the US.

They dont let that many off here in the US, just one smoke bomb every now and again during the match.

The pics were just to show how smoke can look great.

Jeeez. Smoke bombs are common in the US but they dont let them off all at the same time like the above pictures, they let one smoke bomb off at various times during the match.

They aren't allowed in US grounds BTW but the rules aren't enforced very much. Fans recently (Toronto, Colorado) have been throwing them on the pitch which most fans dont like because they are tolorated in the stands but they are afraid the clubs will take a more strict view if they keep throwing them on the pitch holding matches up.

Toronto at Colorado:-

i like them, two games against cambridge at home a good few years ago had a flare in the london road end, was great and really makes the atmosphere that bit more special....

celtic let off smoke bombs at our place pre season, looked great. I have a load of blue smoke bombs but im a bit worried about letting them off. You can get them from paintball shops online as those geeks love em...

Reppz - April 21, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
Speak of the devil... someone thrown one on the pitch at Colchester! Stewards didn't flap though!!! Simply disposed of it.

Blackcountry Villa - April 22, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
Seems more and more people are getting their hands on smoke bombs and flares. A lad had a red flare in the back garden of the pub after the Blues game on Sunday

purpleronnie - April 22, 2008 10:15 AM (GMT)
They are easy to get its just whether people have the balls to use them.

What they tend to do over here is get the surfer out then the fans underneath it ignite the smoke this way they dont know who's done it. They also do that with flares but I dont think flares look good when just dropped on the floor.

yeah true but you would get in way more trouble if you were caught with flares over here than abroad.

One of our fans had a flare at Everton today, after our 2nd goal they threw it and it landed on the pitch by the touchline. The cameraman by us was filming it close up, doubt whether they would have showed it on tv though

A nice royal blue one, too.

I liked it but thought it was a tenchhouse trick throwing from the upper tier on to the pitch. The lad set it off very quickly after yous scored, I'd rather go mad and celebrate the goal rather than set it off.

It had claret smoke with a blue flame.

I didn't see how early it was thrown, i only saw it after i'd stopped celebrating
