Used to be fires regularly in the old days didn't there?

jonboilfc - April 13, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
didn't something happen at bradford before and quite a few fans died?

More evidence of why fences should never ever be seen in football stadiums again. Like Bradford this looks like a seated area thankfully without fences. Incidentally the seats themselves are rather problematic when evacuating are they not? So no reason at all this should be used against the concept of safe standing.

It is very unfortunate that the German grounds we often hold up as examples still mostly have fences, to be honest it's like an open goal to those who oppose safe standing. I just wish they would get rid of them as I'm convinced there is nothing whatsoever to justify them.

IMO some countries still do need fences. Italy defo does and so does Holland. Hibs fans make regular trips to see Groningen alot (a few friends have been) and hooliganism is still well alive over there. Like over here it's been forced away from the ground (most times) but large groups can still be seen in the stadiums. With a combitnation of casuals, the young team and the fanatics it could turn pretty nasty indeed.

Fences can be okay if they are managed properly. Most fences in football stadia have large exit points and are manned by a couple of stewards. Plus stadiums these days are all concrete and steel and will have been fire proofed, also as shown in one of the videos, there are fire apparatus in the stands now.

Isn't there a fence type thing at Wembley? We have a similar one at Hampden. Its there to stop spectators entering the pitch so if there was a fire it might as well be a 30ft high fence...

Aren't German ones designed to collapse if enough pressure is applied, or a sort of netting that can break easier?

could have been a lot worse! the stewards should have called the fire guys in asap then it would of been sorted and the game could have gone ahead. instead they pissed about
