Jonny PUFC/THFC - February 18, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
was asked by a Posh fan today "why is the SUSD site so out of date" I explained that a new site is being worked on (I think), how is that going? when is it due? I remember talk a while ago but none since

It's coming along nicely there was a thread on it not that long ago.

We have articles, a set homepage design and people ready to goto work on the news page.

Shouldn't be long.....althought we've been saying that for a while...anynews Ash?

Cowbacon - February 20, 2008 03:49 AM (GMT)
Being honest, I've got quite a bit on my plate at the minute now, so any progress with the cms features (ie. templatey, searchable, news & articles pages etc.) will probably be pretty slow until the middle of June, where I'll have the time to get it all done in about a week. If the design and content are done and everyone's waiting on me to get that done, then putting some of that together the old fashioned way might be a good idea.

Ashy is in Lyon and won't be back until late Thursday/early Friday I think.

Ashymark - February 22, 2008 04:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah, got back about 12ish today. Amount of work I've got at uni right now is impossible, not had time to do anything for the site in weeks now. Forecast is that, this wont change till mid May

Right even though it's brought on by the best intentions this part time web design lark (which even I tried my hand at a year or so ago) is not gong to work.

Does anybdy know some proffessional web desgn houses who would be sympathtic to the cause and do a site at a reduced rate or if not start asking round????

We need some funds, this is our primary tool for the public and it's looking old and out of date.

There is also the option of getting a freelance web guy to do the website. I have done it before and used a guy from eastern europe to knock up a decent blog design for around 40 quid. Obviously for a website it'll be more, but there is value out there by getting free lance website designers from eastern european countries.

A wee design/page I knocked up

Good start that mate,

Jonny who started this thread is having a word with the fella who runs this place

http://www.bluemonkey.it/

Apparently he might be interested in helping.

While I greatly appreciate all those who have offered help so far and no doubt spent a fair amount of time working towards a new site for us, we really do need to sort this out soon.

I've no wish to piss off those who've helped and got so far to date but I'm sure we're losing people due to the design of the site...

Thoughts please? Can I just ask somebody - anybody! - to do what they can in the short term to improve the look here?

nick the jack - February 26, 2008 05:42 PM (GMT)
I'm not very good with computers, so would be no good working on a new site. But I dont see why it has to be changed, it does the job fine, and I dont see why it needs to change, or is this just me being old fashioned and resisting change?

Swansea's forum looks a bit more stylish, but so what, does it matter that much?

This isn't meant to offend anyone, just as someone who doesn't know and understand much modern technology, is what your talking about important?

Geordie_Doby - February 26, 2008 06:03 PM (GMT)
I'll ask the lad who made/runs our site to do it for you.

http://www.toonultras.com

He made that by himself.

I'm with you on this one but I think the main page should look a bit more professional. If you think of other (larger) campaigns such as stop ID cards you will see what I mean. The news reports should be consistantly updated but you don't necessarily need a new website to do this.

In the short term, using hibs1875's design (though I'd say that News should be the left most menu button as its the first thing people go for, minor thing, and its not quite lining up properly in Firefox - a pixel too wide I think) and simply copying and pasting all the text etc. from the old one, plus whatever new stuff has been cooked up and making all the articles by hand would be a good idea in my opinion. Doesn't require anything complex, though would be more maintainance than a properly done up one with CMS etc, which its perfectly possible to add to it later.

Its just at the moment we have nothing to shout about bar a forum.

The march that happened should be front page, articles wrote about it, pictures etc. Instead all we have is a thread on a forum about it.

There should be articles on how and why safe standing works etc.

but (as nick was pointing out) this is a question of content rather than design. everybody seems to be insistent that we need a "new site" and is basically just concentrating on giving it a cosmetic make over (new graphics / layout / colours / logo etc.)
I think that how the site looks isn't half as important as new, interesting content other than the forum. This is what we should be focussing on and a lot more of us could facilitate this than design websites.

Agreed the content is poor with letters and reviews based on the forum rather than the site.

However both content and visuals go together, if you don't like the way the site is layed out espically if new content is being added with no idea of how to navigate then it's going to oput people off.

If it's going to be the central communication link then it must be informative and appealing to look at IMO

What CMS system are you thinking about..? A simple one for articles like CuteNews or a more advanced one..?

Don't CMS cost a fair wack?

Jonny PUFC/THFC - February 27, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)

The guy who owns and runs his own web design company is interested in sponsoring the site for free. he will check it over with his partners and get back to me. If all is good who is the best person to pass his details onto and he would like to know what programme is being used to build the new one at th moment..

fingers crossed

I agree that the look of the thing and the layout are important too - just trying to play devil's advocate and get people to think about the content too.
