Title: February 23rd
Description: Newcastle United vs Manchester United
ATFC Martin - February 16, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
It looks as though supporters groups are trying to get in on the act now. Good on them for organising it and I hope it goes well.

United We Stand
On Saturday 23rd February, the day when Newcastle United are scheduled to play Manchester United at St James' Park, the Toon Ultras and Stretford End Flags, a Manchester United Fan Group will be Uniting in a bid to back the introduction of 'Safe Standing sections within British stadia. Below is a little information about the upcoming 'march' and 'display'.
The 'March'
The march will begin at O'Neills opposite Newcastle's Central Station, where the members of Toon Ultras and Stretford End Flags will meet at around 4:30. At O'Neills a number of leaflets are likely to be handed out to people as well as on route to the ground.
Whilst 'marching' to the ground both fan groups will be carrying banners with the phrase 'United We Stand' incorporated on them. It is being done in a protest against the reducing of allocations for away fans that stand, as well as the 'throwing out' of fans who stand at the game. It is also being done to put pressure on the governing bodies to introduce 'Safe-standing' areas like the sections created in Germany, which have become a huge success.
The Display
At the ground a few songs will be sang together and both sets of fans will remain 'United'. They will then part and go through their own individual turnstiles. However, just before kick off the same banners will be held up, and flags will be waved, in a hope that everyone will see our somewhat controversial display.
How You Can Help...
We would like you to help us by standing up to be counted if you believe that safe-standing should be introduced, and join us in our bid to gain back some of the fun and atmosphere that has been stamped out by the authorities. Please feel free to join us in our 'protest' and go to O'Neills at 4:30 on matchday, and sing your hearts out for something you believe in. Alternatively, make your voices known within the ground by joining in with chants such as "Stand up if you love the toon” or "Stand up and support your team".

purpleronnie - February 16, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
Thats great, wasnt that the game the authorities (or clubs) had targeted to make people sit?.
This is a perfect answer.
Well done all concerned.
Reppz - February 16, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
This is brillaint as it also shows standers as not hooligans that the police and stewards believe but co-operative people that just want freedom of choice at football.
Great News.

I'm very impressed too. Great, simple idea.
Hope it goes well.

Supporters plan St James's Park Protest
Newcastle fans are planning to stage a join demonstration with their Manchester United counterparts in protest at efforts to force them sit during matches.
The red devisl travelling contingent are well known for standing throught away games. And that prospect has had local safety authorities threatening to force Newcastle to cut ticket allocations for visiting teams AND remove seats currently filled by home fans adjoining the away end.
Both clubs have appealed to supported to stay seated during Saturdays premier league clash or risk the possibility of the magpies safety advisory group - chaired by newcastle city council - withdrawing st james parks safety certificate.
But while united chairman chris mort is willing to discuss the issue of safe standing with the fans , they are set to make their sand - aling side rival Man U fans on saturday.
And the protests do not end there , football fans are invited to the meeting at gateshead stadium on tuesday night to discuss action against premier leagues plans to play games abroad.
You know fans have had a bad deal when supporters are prepared to put aside traditional rivalries and stand shoulder to shoulder against a common foe said jeremy robinson of the football supporters federation who is organsing the NO TO GAME 39 summit.
Not only will newcastle fans stand side by side with man u fans at SJP next week over the issue of persistant standing , but perhaps even more significantly , at gateshead on tuesday fans will suspend some bitterness for the unveling of the no to game 39 banner. The meeting starts at 7:30pm.

That will be really good for the campaign.
The ngames on Setanta so I'll send them an e-mail and let them know whats going on. Hopefully they wont ignore it like I imagine SKY would.
pete - February 17, 2008 03:09 PM (GMT)
Nows a chance. Let Sky Sports know about the march if you can. They chose to ignore the Safe Standing day generally at Wycombe v Brentford but they may be a little short of news and ok they will be going on about Keegans bad start and how good United were against Arsenal (big yawn) but if you can get enough local interest and a lot of noise the cameras may turn to this protest. Hope the banners are good and big. These fans are a credit to both clubs and football - we are united in this and it is how it should be.
ML - ITFC - February 17, 2008 03:30 PM (GMT)
Well done to both supporters groups, hope all goes well, I'll try e-mailing Setanta as well soon to see if they'll cover it.
chalky - February 17, 2008 07:45 PM (GMT)
This is brilliant news and I take me hat off to both sets of supporters for organising it. I hope it goes well and a few thosands take part in the March.
Have Sky been emailed about this?
Is there anything SUSD can do in support of this?
Unfortunately Newcastle is a rathe long way from Portsmouth but are any members going up who aren't associated with either club?
ManicBlue - February 17, 2008 08:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that's what I was wondering - anyone off here interested in going up Saturday to join the demo? By the reading of it, the Toon Ultras want as many people possible outside the ground to join up with them. I'm scheduled to work this Saturday, but am going to try and get it swopped for the next week. Would love to go.
Come to think of it, this will be the biggest pro-standing protest yet, won't it?
And is there any way, Footie Focus can be made to listen we've got an ongoing issue here, that needs to be heard?
NMFinest/FulhamFC - February 17, 2008 08:52 PM (GMT)
Quality stuff. Hope it gets the recognition deserved
Tufty - February 18, 2008 10:05 AM (GMT)
Im a bit concerned about this, so far a press release has gone out, yet no flyers/banners etc have been made.
Cant see people attending in numbers until some formal organisation is in place.
Amanda - February 18, 2008 10:23 AM (GMT)
It is indeed worrying since I know that Mark Longden indicated that money was avialable for banners etc...
Pav - February 18, 2008 12:12 PM (GMT)
The TU will have a banner sorted for this. I have 55ft of material sitting nexto me right now, so no need to worry about us.
Amanda - February 18, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
Who are the Man Utd fans involved in this...?
Get them to email Mark Longdon of IMUSA asap.
Amanda - February 18, 2008 04:58 PM (GMT)
Man Utd fans sorting banners.. all in hand.

Just a short e-mail to inform you that before the Newcastle V Man Utd game on Saturday there will be a march from O'Neil's bar to St James's due to the fact that fans want safe standing areas. Both sets of fans intend to be on the peaceful march to show the authorities that we want standing sections at English stadiums. I hope you show this as it will be a good example of fans uniting together, and the FSF say that 92% of fans believe there should be a choice as to stand or sit. I'll be watching with interest on Saturday
PS. football matters is a very good show, it shows footy from a fans perspective, well done.
Above is my e-mail to setanta. Below is the address to e-mail. They will be showing the game on Saturday so its best we contact them, the more nudges they get the better.

Just sent:
I'd like to ask Setanta to consider giving coverage to the pre-match joint march for safe standing due to take place from O'Neil's bar to St James's Park on Saturday 23rd Feb. In an environment where ordinary football fans are increasingly portrayed by football authorities as animals and treated accordingly for simply supporting their teams it would be very refreshing to see responsible broadcasters giving positive media attention to fans putting aside traditional rivalries to unite for something they believe in.

anyone sending them an email check your inbox for "failed delivery notices". I sent the above from their site feedback thingy (via the link above) and got a return message to my inbox saying it hadn't gone. Resent just from my normal web-based email and it went no problem. What i'm saying is maybe don't rely on the link above but just email them as you normally would.

I received an email back from setanta saying that they had got my email and would reply to me in full within 5 working days, the game would have gone ahead by then but hopefully they would have taken my comments on board.

********************************************
I am writing on behalf of Standupsitdown. We are an organisation that have been working alongside the Football supporters Federation (FSF) in an effort to establish 'safe standing areas' in all British football league grounds.
We are hoping that the following press release may be of interest to you - It is hoped that this will be the first of many peaceful supporter-led campaigns that will evolve in protest at the way that footballs fans are treated and viewed by the authorities.
It is a protest for the right for choice as well as a protest against the disproportionate measures that clubs use to deal with perceived problem fans - examples such as reduced capacities and aggressive stewarding cause a great deal of resentment among many supporters.
It will also be a rare show of supporter unity to the Premier league, all of its members, and the Football licensing authority (FLA) to remind them that we do have a voice.
I hope this will be of some interest to you
thanks for reading
