Title: Standing

jonboilfc - January 29, 2008 02:42 PM (GMT)
do you think standing is on the rise and is increasing more and more each year or not?

gooner1 - January 29, 2008 02:46 PM (GMT)
Definetly on a rise. Think back to maybe 3 years ago only United and a couple of others stood every game. Now you have United, Villa, Liverpool, West Ham and Newcastle stood pretty much everywhere aswell as Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea standing at atleast 75% of games. Then Boro, Pompy, City around 50%. Everton have even started standing occasionaly. Definetly an increase imo and long may it continue.

Blackcountry Villa - January 29, 2008 02:47 PM (GMT)
Yes.

In the Premiership you've got Villa, Man Utd, Liverpool, Newcastle and you could probably add West Ham to that list of away fans who stand at every game.

Then you've got the likes of Tottenham, Man City and Chelsea who stand at most away games, Arsenal could probably be added to this list aswell.

Then theres teams who have started to stand at more aways this season like Boro'. Even a few Blackburn fans stood at Villa on saturday! Sunderland stand at a fair few aways.

Theres only the likes of Derby, Everton, Fulham, Wigan, Blues, who never seem to stand

Blackcountry Villa - January 29, 2008 02:58 PM (GMT)
It would be interesting to hear from lower league fans who the main away standers are in their leagues, not fans who stand at local derbies but fans who stand at nearly every away game. I know Leeds always stand but can't think of any others, in the Championship i know theres a few teams who take good numbers like Albion and Wolves but they nearly always sit

LongtonLeeds - January 29, 2008 03:07 PM (GMT)
This season no whole allocations have stood all game except millwall and that was just to make tits of themseles again. Others have just had afew hundred or thousand at most

Cardiff always stood but they only ever brought 400 because of them having to come up on coaches, PNE stood for most of the games we played them in but again dont do it at every away game

Wednesday were the only ones to stand at leeds and then stand again at aways at other places. Its not very often you see a full end stood at every game in these leagues (except leeds it seems) unless its at luton or southend or something like that when if you sat down you may never get back up again

I find it strange that theres more standing from away fans in the 'big, corporate Premier League' than there is in the lower leagues

nufc - January 29, 2008 03:14 PM (GMT)
Im sure half of Villa's support sat last year, but it was a sunday kick off or something dodgey, or im thinking of some other team.

Well alot of teams who come leeds are full of fans who dont go often and have come just becuase its leeds. Northampton brought 1800 yet they average about 400 at away games, same for swindon and doncaster so it splits the singers up and mix them with jester hat wearing fans there for the 'big' game so if they stood would get kicked out, just ask away fans what our stewards are like....

Most lower league stewards are fine with standing and are there just for the money so dont get involved but they get told what leeds fans are like before so leave us to it.

It was a Wednesday night, we took 1500 and about 20 people near the front sat. Newcastle is a dodgy one with how high up you are though, we always still stand there but i remember reading on here before from a Newcastle fan that fans like Spurs all sat and half of West Ham's support sat there

Why have Everton stopped standing?

I always remembered them coming to Old Trafford and the whole 3,000 standing? And I used to see them on TV at other aways and they always stood?

But this season 100% of the sat and you lot are saying they're part of the "sitters club" like Wigan and Fulham?

;)

Everton have always sat.

They've stood up at West Ham in the league cup and Chelsea in the league cup this season, that's it. They sit at Anfield in the derby. Says it all. Shame really, hope it is on the increase with that shower of horrible c*nts.

I've been going away pretty much every week for 14 years now, and not very often we've sat.

I think often in lower leagues away allocations sell-out less frequently so I reckon there is more self-policing where most team's fans stand at the back and sit at the front.

Whereas in the PL some fans cannot move to the front to sit or to the back to stand so it seems if the majority want to stand they all stand and if the majority want to sit the minority of sitters get picked out easy.

Is that a fair reflection? we still have terraces so hard to comment.

Reppz - January 29, 2008 05:00 PM (GMT)
I rarely ever see a championship support stand persistantly at the Ricoh. Millwall on Saturday most of them stood. I like to think Coventry are decent standers away from home. If we sell out, we stand the whole game.

LongtonLeeds - January 29, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
I cant actually remember coventry fans at elland road  i think of the 3 years we were down i only went one of our home games in the first season so didnt really notice you then...

We stood both times at the ricoh i know that but when i went with stoke i tried to stand on the back row and got told to sit down so shows how different they react to different fans and teams, i take it the main standers at home are the boys pen to the right of the away end under the big screen

Yeah to the right of the away fans and also a fair few in the opposite end to the away fans.

I remember i stood in the corner for one game against Leeds it was 1-1 you lot got a lucky last minute winner. I think most of you lot stood then.

ML - ITFC - January 29, 2008 11:42 PM (GMT)
At Portman Road standing hasn't changed much at all. The Lower North always stand, no where else does. Its been that way for 5 seasons. For away games we stand at most London clubs and a handful of northern clubs.

AndrewFFC - January 30, 2008 12:43 AM (GMT)
Apparently a fair few of our lot stood against Bolton, and wernt harrased by the stewards.

Yeah I've always found this slightly baffling. Similarly, the prem clubs that rarely stand are often the 'smaller' clubs', so have probably experienced far less efforts by their club to replace the traditional fan with the more affluent (and usually docile) variety.

Think that's more or less right. If a section is a sell out then and the front row stand then everyone is forced to stand, wheteher they want to or not. Hence PL clubs tend to be either all standing or all sitting.

Whereas in our leagues most clubs don't have enough fans to sell out so we segregate ourselves. A lot of people aren't really bothered whether the stand or sit, and will tend to sit in a seat if they have one but stand in a terrace otherwise.

I think thats spot on as well. When Swansea go away if theres less then 500 you'll usually only get the back few rows or one block standing. Whilst when we sell out (Leeds, Forest, Oldham) all stand, as people are given no choice. In the second division there are so few sell outs that people are given a choice, and its the same in 3 and 4.

In Division 3 Leeds are the best standers by a long way. Millwall have a group who will not sit, no matter what. Forest are decent, but dont always stand away. Swansea are up there as well, maybe as the second best behind Leeds. The rest, the smaller clubs usually only have about 100 at the back standing, and it then depends on how strict the stewards are, very at Swansea.

If you get a chance, have a read of their fanzine "When Skies Are Grey"

It practically condemns standing and singing.

Bascially, because Liverpool do it and they like to think they're above that and look down their scouse noses. Honestly. The undertone to every article on that subject gives the same feeling.

Good to see there's a few young lads in their support now that have stood away in Europe, away at West Ham and Chelsea and realise what a difference it makes.

albiontilidie - January 31, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
Cardiff always stand at our place, Chaventry city aintbad standers, we stand occasionally espicially in London and mid week games, always have section standing whereever. Shef Wed always stand Forest stand at a fair few away games and leeds always do.

T-Man Lcfc - February 3, 2008 04:56 PM (GMT)
I'd say the main standers in the championship I'd say would be Sheff wed, Cardiff, Leicester, Coventry and Southampton. Baesd on home and aways. Although Weds and Cov dont have too many at home last time I went. Will judge cov in 2 weeks time!

Leeds are easily the best outside the prem I'd say. And up there with Liverpool, United and Spurs.

So'ton and Cardiff certainly are top standers. Sheff Wed are very average, few stand at Hillsborough. Coventry, only a handful stand at the Ricoh and I think about 10 stood at Ipswich this season.

Personally for Town, 2,500 stand at home every week. London/East Anglian aways everyone normally stands. In the North and Midlands we are a bit hit and miss with standing.

Pretty much agree with that list. Add Millwall & Leeds as League 1 standers.

Coventry are also hit and miss with standing. If we sell out you can guarantee the majority will stand. Surely this can only be a good thing if we get promoted and start selling out more. It also is like an unspoken law amongst our fans that we all have to stand in cup games, whether we sell out or not. Been that way since we won it in 87 and i cant see it stopping.

Reppz - February 3, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
