Title: People Who Support Two Teams.

L.T.F.C - January 24, 2008 10:23 PM (GMT)
Was talking to a mate of mine who claims he supports both Tottenham and Luton. He goes luton from time to time but he goes spurs more. Hes a top lad but I cant get my head round how he can have two teams His deffenet first love is spurs but still says he loves Luton.

I do to some extent understand people who follow a non league team and a league team. But I dont get how you can have the same pasion for two teams. I couldnt imagen felling the same for another team like I do for Luton.

Another one I hate is people who as you who you support and when you sayLuton they come up with
"oh and who is your premiership team then"   Ahh this is from the armchair lot though who cant realy be classed as fans like us on here.

Paxton Sprout - January 25, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)
That'll be because deep down everyone is a Spurs fan, some just haven't realised it yet B)

I don't understand why some have two clubs either but mainly because Spurs give me so much grief I couldn't stand it from two clubs.

There's two blokes I work with that both play football, watch it on TV and go to the odd game when someone has a ticket going but neither support any team at all. Now that I find very weird

AFC#1 - January 25, 2008 10:54 AM (GMT)
I have 2 clubs. Aberdeen and whoever's playing Rangers :D

BWA_Ultra - January 25, 2008 11:03 AM (GMT)
I can't understand it either, I have a good mate who is quite a clued up lad however he seems to have turned into a part-time supporter for both Colchester & Liverpool.

He used to go Colchester games every week when i started going.

nw7 yid - January 25, 2008 11:35 AM (GMT)
I do have soft spots for certain clubs (e.g. Forest) and have no problem going to their matches and singing their songs as long as they're not in the same competition as Tottenham.

However, it would be massively inaccurate to say that I support more than one team. There's only one team I love, and that is Tottenham.

I've also come across a few people who support two teams. Many of the guys I know who go to Barnet are Tottenham or Arsenal fans. They know a lot about Barnet and like to lend their support to their local team and watch reasonably-priced football. I also used to work with a guy who supported Ipswich and Colchester United (and Braintree Town!) - didn't seem that odd at the time, but now they're in the same division god knows what he does when they play each other...

There were a fair few of yours there Tuesday mate. Will be a decent contingent of the ASC for the final at Wembley I'm sure. Some of them are proper Spurs now some love both.
I presume most of your lot up there know of the friendship between both groups ? ;)

I wasn't aware of this love-in, but I also independently have a strong soft spot for Aberdeen. Was on a course in Worcestershire in 2001 when we played Chelsea in the league cup. Met a few Scottish guys and convinced them to cheer on Tottenham in that game, and they agreed as long as I took an interest in the Dons in return. We won 5-1, and not long later I saw my first ever Aberdeen game on the telly - they beat Celtic. Perfect all round. I've been to watch Aberdeen away against Kilmarnock and had a cracking time.

Steve - January 25, 2008 12:16 PM (GMT)
All of my mates watched Wycombe like me loads in the early 90s. A couple then decided to support Palace (the Dowie year) they went up - saying oh yeah they have true , great fans. Well in a promotion year for a bigger club its gonna happen - I then said well being a turncoat fan you are not exactly great are ya. Well they havent been this season as up until recently had been struggling. Most of my other mates dont go now - due to Div 4 and playing on Saturdays and it is pretty poor football - but it is rubbish when even your mates stop going or go and watch someone else. One good thing is being crap we retain terraces

Lawnmower Man - January 25, 2008 01:35 PM (GMT)
Think I've outlined my own history before. There was no local team to me after Maidstone went bust in 92 when I was seven years old, and I wouldn't be aware that they existed in any form for about 13-14 years. By that time, I had been a season ticket holder at the Dell/St.Mary's for some years, doing most of the away games as well. Also, the two clubs exist in entirely different worlds; there is scant possibility of them ever meeting. So ethically, I feel pretty much OK about supporting two teams!

If I'm honest, I'd have to say that eventually Stones will overtake Saints in my affections. Not to say that I won't continue to go to Southampton games and my feelings for the club as an entity will become any less strong, but the element of civic pride and the feeling that I am supporting the club that represents my town is of course not there to the same degree. Naturally I've spent a large amount of time in Southampton (my brother and a couple of mates went to uni there so I used to visit quite a lot, as well as the football) and have a great knowledge and affection for the city, but I'm not a Sotonian and a Southampton fan, don't get the whole package, as it were.

So I'll carry on supporting two teams with my half and half arrangement for now, but expect that it'll shift a bit in the next few years.

Spurs + guests v Chelsea + guests at Wembley

:ph43r:

Reckon this is just the sort of game the Met plod could do without

Stoned_Prof - January 25, 2008 03:46 PM (GMT)
I don't support two clubs yet, but I will probably pick up a second club within the year. I'll explain:

My absolute no 1 club is Maidstone United. Maidstone is my home-town and I've lived there for 17.5 years. The club represents my community, and so I support them. Out of the 79 games I've seen, 73 have involved Maidstone.

I also have a slight affinity for Chelsea, which started sometime in the late 90s, when Vialli was manager. This is because my dad is a Chelsea fan (he used to go a few times a season before I was born. Couldn't afford to go more often, and doesn't go at all now). However, I don't consider myself to be a Chelsea supporter, just a well-wisher.

There are many other clubs, such as Dover Athletic, Hastings United and Ashford Town, that I, along with many other Maidstone fans, wish well as they are remembered as being particularly welcoming and friendly when we visited.

The second club I pick up will depend on which University I go to. I hope to go to Imperial College London, in which case I'll be living in Feltham and will go and watch Feltham play when I can't get to Maidstone games, as Feltham play about 15 mins walk from where I'll be living.

In my case, Maidstone will always be my no 1 club, but I'll also support my local club (after I move) as a second club, particularly on weeknights when Maidstone aren't playing anywhere near me.

Hope that sort of explains the mentality of some of us multi-club people.

Yeah there were quite a few rangers at everton, and its the same at most away games up north. So there will be a fair few rangers down for the final, it's definately going to be interesting on feb 24th

Yea, most Abdn fans know about it I'd say and a fair few have a soft spot for Spurs. Think there was a few Tottenham in Madrid last year and no doubt they'll be out and about in Munich. I'm not into that lark but don't have a problem with those that are :ph43r: ;)

i know loads of people who support a lower league club and a premiership club

amfy - January 25, 2008 07:57 PM (GMT)
I live in Birmingham & support Villa but my other half support Preston North End. The vaguaries of Sky sports fixtures leave me with a few free Saturdays and I watch Preston with him about a dozen times a season.

At first it was great - I could get involved in the match because I wasn't exactly neutral, but when Preston lost, it didn't hurt a bit! Then, last season when they missed out on the play offs, I unfortunately realised that I had merely doubled my potential for football related pain! (Lets not even begin to talk about this season!)

On the other hand, much as I love PNE now, Villa are still my team and although in reality I do support Preston too, if anyone asks who I support, I would say "Villa", not "Villa & Preston"

Not sure anyone can feel the same passion for 2 clubs, what happens if they play each other??

I had a soft spot for Wigan when they were non league and wondered down to Wembley in 1985 when they won the Freight Rover.

Also kept an eye on Hendon as I briefly played for them, but Dowie kept me out of the side before Southampton came in for him :o

And always keep an interest on the team local to where I live, so Barnet, Sydney Swans (I know its Aussie rules) and MK Dons get honourable mentions :ph43r:

nick the jack - January 26, 2008 01:27 PM (GMT)
I support Swansea and just Swansea. I usually have a soft spot for another team, but say the manager leaves, I might not then, so it isn't supporting really in any form. When I was younger I used to follow Liverpool and Bolton, went to see them play a few times, posters on my wall and that sort of thing, but Swansea always came first. When I reached about 16 I couldn't be bothered with them and now have complete alleigance to Swansea.

Yet when you watch footy on TV there is always clubs your going to like a bit, at the moment its Leeds and WHU because of the fans.

But I was born in Swansea, went to my first game when I was 4, lived here for 20 years, and now go to every game. Swansea will always be my club no matter what.

Tom - Leigh RMI - January 26, 2008 10:13 PM (GMT)
Leyther Born and Bred, Leigh RMI fan, for life couldn't and wouldn't dream of supporting any other team. Non of this, Manchester Utd, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton, Bolton, Wigan balls all the other Leythers support...

Yet they all support the reasonably successful local RL side... but not the football side, beyond me. Maybe if the put abit of effort into reseaching and getting involved and putting abit of money and time into RMI, they too could become fairly successful, as has been prove in the past, just a 3 games off the football league in 2000 but I suppose being surrounded by all the big clubs we don't really stand much of a chance.

Yes - although not as much for a variety of reasons, not least of which is struggling a bit with the claret and blue thing because of Burnley!

I have to add that having said the PNE have doubled my potential for football related pain, the opposite happened yesterday.

I endured a mind numbingly dull game against Blackburn at Villa Park, but then came out to find PNE had unexpectedly stuffed Derby 4-1! Thank you PNE for brightening up my weekend - for once!

Support Ipswich and AFC Sudbury. I watch Sudbury as much as I can normally when Town aren't playing or are at an away game far away. Nice to have a bit of variation, no stewards or regulations to be hassled with at Sudbury. Can stand freely on the terraces as well.

And a completely different style of support at Sudbury to Ipswich. Ipswich have traditional support but Sudbury have drums, air raids sirens, horns. Normally I don't like that sort of thing, but Sudbury supporters on The Shed terrace have created some brilliant and original songs, and can make one hell of noise for a relatively small amount of people.

BWA_Ultra - January 28, 2008 02:14 PM (GMT)
I may have to join you down at AFC Sudbury sometime(if the fixtures allow) only been a couple of times.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Braintree, however there's only 1 team for me!

I like the sound of you lot, and am now hoping that you come up to the Premier (as long as we play you on a Saturday. There's no way I could get there midweek, as it's a bit of a trek). We need more noisy fans. I also like the look of 'The Shed' at your ground. Out of interest, were you a Sudbury Town or Sudbury Wanderers fan (or both/neither) before the merger?

I, along with some other non-League fans, don't consider the Conference National to be 'proper' non-League any more as the clubs are nearly all full-time, the fans are segregated etc. It might as well be called Football League Three. Therefore, if you want the full 'non-League experience' then I'd go for a team below that. Being based in Kent, with my team playing in a regional league, I have no experience of football in your area, and so cannot advise on atmospheres etc. My advice would just be to go along to a few local clubs and see. It probably won't set you back too much and even if there's no singing there's usually a bit of banter, either between the two groups of fans, within one group (as most regular fans at this level tend to know each other) or between players and fans (for the same reason).

Hopefully we'll do the buisness this year after just being pipped at the post last year in the playoffs. For a small town club they pull in decent crowds down at AFC, normally around 270 - 300 for league games and theres always a good atmosphere. I used to go and watch Sudbury Town down at The Priory Ground when I was a lot younger (admitedly I don't remember a lot as I was about 6 or 7) and my dad used to play for Wanderers a while back. Have you heard much about us before then?

I will have a look at the fixtures, Midweek would make more sense (more likely not to be a u's game plus i work in Sudbury so it will save another trip after doing it already 5 times a week.

Edit-just looked at fixtures and seems Canvey in April would be best bet!

I like to look at the grounds that I might be visiting in the near future. I saw Sudbury were a contender for promotion to our league next season and so I had a look at the appropriate page on www.pyramidpassion.co.uk, which happens to include a summary of the club history. I have done the same for some other clubs in Ryman Div 1N, Div 1S and ConfS.

Canvey should be a brilliant game, Canvey supporters said they were bringing between 40 - 50 to Sudbury. Would be a good atmosphere and your best bet for one of the better games.
