Title: Old Grounds You Wished You Have Visted

L.T.F.C - January 17, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
Which old grounds if you could turn back the clock and visit if ya could.

For me it be the den , highbury and the old wembley.

Would also have loved standing on the oak road end at the kenny.

JTsBlueArmy - January 17, 2008 05:27 PM (GMT)
Stamford Bridge - pre development before 1994 (first home game 1996)
Highbury
Maine Road

BHB - January 17, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
Old Stamford Bridge

Plough Lane

The Den

I've been to most of the other older grounds at Derby, Bolton, Middlebrough, Southampton, Leicester, Arsenal, Sunderland, Wembley etc.

Loved Roker Park, proper football ground.

Think I worked it out the other month that I'd been to over 80 different grounds on my travels. Madness.

LongtonLeeds - January 17, 2008 06:14 PM (GMT)
Maine Road and the Victoria Ground are the two that stick in my head. Proper classic grounds in different areas to what they are now to say the least shall we say :ph43r:

red_rose - January 17, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
Maine road- man city
Eastville - Bristol rovers
The Den - Millwall
Victoria ground - Stoke
Springfield park - Wigan

Standupandsing - January 17, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
Maine Road for sure, looked a classic ground.

Victoria Park & Roker park have to be up there.

I bet Leicester v Derby at the Baseball ground was a good 'un as well.

nick the jack - January 17, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
Wish I'd made it to the Den, Highbury and old Wembley. The only grounds Ive done which dont exist anymore are the Vetch, Gay Meadow, and Belle Vue. Glad Ive done Layer Road before it goes.

Stoned_Prof - January 17, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
Old Wembley
Highbury - Arsenal
Old Champion Hill - Dulwich Hamlet (It was the largest amateur ground in the country, holding 20,000. I've been to the new one, which holds about 3,000, and it is a nice ground.)
Athletic Ground - Maidstone United (demolished before I was born, though)

LH_88 - January 17, 2008 11:06 PM (GMT)
Maine Road

Roker Park

Lawnmower Man - January 18, 2008 12:31 AM (GMT)
Maiders' London Road ground, which is now an MFI. To think I used to pass where it used to be on the bus to school every day! And I don't think a single kid on there (including myself) knew what used to be there or that United still existed, many still don't I imagine...a whole generation of young blokes with their nearest team the pikeys up the road, real f*cking shame :(

Still, I'm very grateful that I was lucky enough to start being taken to Saints away games in the mid 90s, when Maine Road, Filbert Street etc. were still around. My visit to Burnden Park in 95 (?) is now a treasured memory, though I was a stupid kid and didn't appreciate it whatsoever at the time.

Old grounds that I would have visited by now had they not been replaced by plastic bowls:

Ayresome Park
Roker Park
Baseball Ground
Goldstone ground
Elm Park
Victoria Park
Boothferry Park
Eastville
Vetch Field

Sigh.

The Dell
Baseball Ground
Roker Park

Maine Road was brilliant. Different world to where they are now.

First went there in the mid 90's, think we drew 2-2 and they went down on the last day of the season. Had some great days there.

Filbert Street was always a favourite as well. For the tin roof. Cracking day there on Patrik Berger made his debut for us, came off the bench and scored twice as we won 3-1. "La la la la la, Patrik Berger, la la la la la la....".

I don't think there's one new ground that I like. Or anyone seems to like.

Rhino - January 18, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
most of those grounds were tenche. Death traps some of them with worse than 3rd world facilities.

Of the new stadiums, The Millennium is probably the best

Cowbacon - January 18, 2008 02:11 PM (GMT)
I only went to about one or two games a season when we were at Filbert St. - its something I always wish I'd done more often. I suppose it means that I kind of idealise it a bit, but it really was so much better, honestly!

Bit gutted about all the other ones like the Vetch, Maine Road, Highbury that I've missed out on.

The millenium stadium is the best recent stadium because even though its incredibly cavernous, it does do a very good job of keeping the noise in and the location is brilliant, though I never had a chance to compare it to its predecessor.

The new grounds I have been to. 1 being the best, 5 being the worst.

1. Bolton
2. Millwall
3. Huddersfield
4. Reading
5. Swansea

The only 2 I like are the Den and the Reabok, their both a bit different. Huddersfield is alright, just a bit weird, not a great view and a bit untidy. 4 and 5 characterless bowls.

Lazio 1900 - January 19, 2008 10:51 AM (GMT)
The old Kop of Liverpool

purpleronnie - January 19, 2008 11:03 AM (GMT)
I've been lucky I've been lots of the old stadiums pre hillsborough. I guess Hampden park would have been amazing.

p.s. My day on the Kop at anfield wasnt a pleasant one. Not sure if it was the constant swaying of the crowd going backwards and forwards or the terrible egg sandwich I had before the game but I have never felt so ill, kinda ruined the experience.

Tanzo - January 19, 2008 11:36 AM (GMT)

Remembered I've been to Donny's new ground as well. It's a boring bowl, but theres something about it which makes it alright. I'd put it third and Hudders down to 4th. How does everyone else rank new grounds? I dont like them, but some can be alright.

Paxton Sprout - January 21, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
Filbert Street and Roker Park about the only old style grounds I never got to. For some reason I've not managed Fratton Park or Molineux yet either.

You haven't been to MK Dons or Darlington then? I've been to Bolton but none of the others in your list and I too thought it was quite a nice ground. Their fans were rubbish though all sat and hardly sang at all!

Out of new grounds I've been to.

Best = Burton!
Worst - MK Dons.

Longhurst JR - January 21, 2008 01:44 PM (GMT)
Burton is trouting awful! Concrete jungle! Despite it having standing I still think it's crap, consolation is I've got in for 3 quid both times!

Aint been to those 2, gonna give MK a miss in the cup as well. Darlo is a hell of a way, but I will do it one day. That has got to be the worst example of a new stadium: 3,500 in 27,000 seats. Even if one day they made it into Div 2 they'd only get about 8-9,000 - what a waste.

Anyone else got new grounds they like?
There are some alright ones out there, just none of them are special

Suppose Sunderland was not that bad. Millwall was ok I bet the Den was 100 times better through. The staduim of light was still bland, but at least they kept it in the working class area of the city.

1.The Old Den- Heard it was a nasty ground and it looks. Although it would of been great to go to although maybe not as an away supporter though ;) .
http://www.wakeupmillwall.com/Features/071...20Old%20Den.htm

2.The Dell-Such a shame they saw fit to move to the plastic bowl that is St Marys.

3. Filbert Street great old school ground

4. Springfield Park- Saw a video of a mud bank and people sliding down it at half time such a ramshackle old ground it would of been fun to visit.

5.Muirton Park St Johnstones old ground http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...486222139199254
