Title: Replica Shirts
stretford ender - January 16, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
Good or bad then?
If i wore a replica shirt to an away id look like a glory hunter.
if i wore a replica shirt to old trafford id look like a glory hunter.
If i wore a replice shirt but never went to games id look like a glory hunter.
Not sure about the rest but at united, eyebrows will be raised at anyone wearing a replica shirt. United are proud to have an away support head to toe in black as it represents the opinion of the true away match going united supporter. Long continue mufc no colour all stood causing mither at aways.
Then if it was the other way around, red would be shown at aways, i can really undertstand the lower league sides wearing colours, its makes sence. Wait till your club gets infested by trouting salmons who just buy the shirt and walk around pretending to support the team. MUFC MIB :ph43r:

I don't have a problem with them myself, it's what you do at matches not what you wear, it's stereotypical to assume all shirt wearing fans are JCLs. That said if I was to wear a replica shirt i'd put on one of my old ones, self image comes into it as well.
Steve - January 16, 2008 09:25 AM (GMT)
Completely understand why real Man U fans dont wear colours. You will see several United shirts in Wycombe today - all of them will not be going to OT for their next game and probably dont even know who they are playing next. Glory huinters.
In Division 4 no fans are glory hunters more like masochists , so for all the games I go to if someone wears their colours they are not glory hunters but real fans. The only exception is at Wembley for the Paint pot cup or Play offs but luckily they are one offs.

Seems a fair analysis.
AFC#1 - January 16, 2008 10:27 AM (GMT)
I only wear a replica for 5's. I buy one every few years.
I wear a scarf to the games now and then mostly homes though.
Don't have a problem with people who wear replicas but a 40 year old man wearing looks a bit stupid IMO. Leave it for the kids.
LongtonLeeds - January 16, 2008 10:38 AM (GMT)
We have alot who do and alot who dont. We always have loads of kids going games still so they will wear their tops all the time then you have the people in leeds coats/hats/scarfs etc... Im rather superstitious though and towards the end of last season i stopped wearing anything leeds and we started to win so i carried it on and the run continued. Ill just wake up on a saturday morning and throw on whatever i can see in my morning state !!!
I prefer retro tops though, i have never thrown one away so if i wear one then it will be an old style one from the 90's
JTsBlueArmy - January 16, 2008 11:26 AM (GMT)
I never wear a top anymore since I was about 16, it doesn't make people a glory hunter, but I still think it looks a bit odd  especially at aways
LH_88 - January 16, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
I left my uber black North Face number round my mates in London on Saturday.
I'm going to feel so out of place wearing my green Parka to Reading on Satdee ;)
Paxton Sprout - January 16, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
Never ever where anything other than a small cockerel badge. It stems from when first started going in the eighties when colours away from home especially = good chance of a kicking.
These days I think grown men in replica shirts look silly, whether at the game or walking around town on any other day. Wearing of shirts on holiday looks especially tench IMO. Last thing I want to see when getting of a plane is some fat gooner sweating in his polyester.
I confess to wearing a Spurs shirt when playing five a side on Thursdays but then again that's to let the goons and all the new chelsea shirt wearers know that we're still around. Plus, it also makes me think I can play like Glenn Hoddle
hibs1875 - January 16, 2008 03:11 PM (GMT)
Grown men look idiots IMHO with the kit on, unless its a final etc. I'll leave the kit wearing to the young 'uns. I always have some sort of colours on, wether its a club crested poloshirt or flag or scarf etc. If I'm travelling 3 hours on a train I won't people to know why :D B)
Stoned_Prof - January 16, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
I can perfectly understand why hardcore fans of the big clubs don't wear them, but personally I wear the club colours with pride. It's quite fun turning another team's ground amber & black for an afternoon (particularly if they're rivals)!
The way I see it, for the big clubs, merchandise is well advertised, marketed and stocked, so all the JCLs buy into it. It then gets associated with them, and the hardcore try to distance themselves from it by refusing to wear colours. The threat of hooliganism at away games in the past may have also influenced this trend.
In contrast, at smaller clubs, merchandise is less advertised and marketed, and is (at least at my club) kept in limited stock, which often means collecting your order the week after. This has the effect of detering the JCLs, as it might actually take some effort to acquire merchandise. The hardcore, however, don't tend to mind this, and generally wear colours out of pride. Although fans are generally proud to wear colours, they don't necessarily have to be the latest ones, and most won't buy every year. Usually, older shirts/scarves, or those from days in lower leagues, are considered more prestigious as they show that the wearer has been around for a while and/or stuck with the club through hard times. Rare items, such as those unavailable to buy (like the T-shirts the fanzine used to give away in competitions) or those that are homemade tend to be viewed similarly.
Of course the above is all very generic, and by no means means that someone's loyalty can be definatively judged from what they wear. It's just a rough summary of my observations regarding this matter.
L.T.F.C - January 16, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
I have no problem with shirts. I just dont want to pay 40 quid for the pleasure to be a walking advert for a vacum cleaner.
I dont like those half and half scarfs which have your team and the team your playing but their again thats just my opinion.

Neither. I do like taking scarves to home games though, so long as their simple and not club distributed.
ChingfordSpurs - January 16, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
Strictly casual. If u got on our coach with colours on you'd be laughed at. Only a pin badge of a cockeral on a st george is allowed . Saying that though I can remember when wearing an expensive piece of clothing that Tottenham Old Bill ripped a sleeve off it ! Not that we were up to anything though <_<
nw7 yid - January 16, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
Can understand fans' disliking of replicas, particularly those who support clubs with a large glory hunting contingent.
I do like them though. Don't wear them to every game, but I like wearing them when I'm making a long trip (as if often the case, having lived in Nottingham and then York). On the train, I spot other Tottenham fans and other Tottenham fans spot me. I'll usually approach them for a chat - show of solidarity. If I'm in colours, people realise that I've been to the game and I get a fair bit of respect for it. I never wear them on a non-match day.
That said, the retro shirts (minus the sponsor) are the best.

Summed it up for me in your first sentence!
BHB - January 16, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
If I turned up at the match in a replica top I'd be laughed out of the pub and the ground. I'd also feel like a tw&t.
Each to their own though
Reasons behind it explained above in simple terms. Although the casual culture, created by scousers I might add, has a massive impact on how lads dress at the game.
red_rose - January 16, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
I dress casual. To be honest I just think replica's look tenche and I'm not going to pay £40 quid for one.
Can understand why lower league teams always wear colours but as a few people have said I'd feel a bit of a prat.
Blackcountry Villa - January 16, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
Ok for kids.
Ridiculous on grown men, even worse when they have a players' name and number on the back

I long for the day when Spurs go back to wearing Donkey Jackets with London Borough of Hackney on the back and dm's. Never seen a stand clear so fast from a load a dustman (Northbank) :P

So this thread has pretty much ended the debate then...
Prem/Championship/Big club fans - No trouting way! Only twats wear colours and replica shirts.
Lower league/non league fans - Wearing the shirt with pride because I support hoof united and I want everyone to know that!!!
Obviously there are exeptions but that seems to be the general pattern emerging on here!
Like Stoned Prof, I too do not buy the shirt every year, I only buy it if I like the design, last few seasons only a few Barnet shirts have actually looked nice. At matches I wear the home shirt from the 2003/04 season just because I think it looks the nicest!
LongtonLeeds - January 16, 2008 11:30 PM (GMT)
We are stuck in both attitudes
We are a Big club so alot dont wear colours
We are a Lower league club so alot also do....theres no winning !!! :ph43r:

Scarf for matches only.
Ive got a replica shirt, which I wear only when playnig 5 a side. Got a smart FFC coat which I dont wear to games either.

No replicas-good!
No colour-boring, supporting the team visually is important also(even though vocally is more important)
It is strange, this, i don't like replica's but i love the sight of colour ALA Holland fans.
Scarf, flag & banners rather than replicas!

Thats what it looks like on MOTD anyway. And you can hardly call Newcastle fans "fickle" and "glory-hunters" can you?

I spoke to someone at Watford Junction station a few months ago who had a smart FFC coat on while I was on my way to some random away game.
It wasn't you was it?

On holiday they wear nothing else.
Spill their brekky all down the front of it in the morning and the dirty c*nts are still wearing it 3 days later with egg and red sauce all over it.
