Funny thing is confetti is banned in some english grounds because its a fire hazzard.

jonboilfc - January 12, 2008 02:37 PM (GMT)
if that happened over hear they would ban all football fans in england from attending matches

one of the differences they have over their compared to here is they have stadiums full of like minded people who all want to sing whereas we have sections or stands singing they will have full stadiums singing

purpleronnie - January 12, 2008 05:15 PM (GMT)
Plus they actually help the fans put on displays and create a good atmosphere as they see it giving the home team an advantage.

We are too 'fair minded'

the spanish ultra video is quality. i've never really thought of spanish having ultra/hooligan groups i know they have but there isn't much coverage about over here its more about the italian or turkish ultras these but that video shows the spaniads do have good support and some of the places can be quite intimidating and can create a good atmosphere

I'm really astonished reading so much about Borussia Dortmund from you. Seems as if "we"(as it has to be before my times ;)) left a pretty good impression in Rome...

Anyway: Think this video is quite better ;) http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=I-pXH_f9gJ4

Gate 7 and Delije

Are there fans on that boat singing to another group of fans on shore? Mental! :D

Bubble - January 19, 2008 08:22 AM (GMT)
Away game in Crete. Two boat loads of Gate 7 singing to each other.

Weird that switzerland a country that is seen by the rest of the world as well to do, neutral, and according to jeremy clarkson hates cars lol, has this amazing fan culture where the rules far from being strict are much more lax than ours.

I went to this derby few years ago and I was disappointed. It was OK but not what I expected.

I also went once to the Roma derby and stood in the Lazio end. THAT was brilliant, that was really great! great chants and fu**ing loud inside the ground. One of the best atmosphere I've ever seen at a football match!

keep your fingers crossed for our match tonight against hamburg ;)

jonboilfc - February 14, 2008 02:32 PM (GMT)
have you been to any british derbies

zueri - February 14, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
yes, arsenal v tottenham and celtic v rangers!

the best matches I've ever been to regarding atmosphere! still getting goosebumps when I'm thinking about those two games.

jonboilfc - February 14, 2008 02:55 PM (GMT)
what makes it so good though compared to other derbies around europe?

zueri - February 14, 2008 03:07 PM (GMT)
hmm.. many factors

- the grounds, how close you're (used to be (highbury)) to the pitch
- the noise when all stands sing together *
- the immense hatred between both set of fans
- the passion the fans show
- the banter (!!!) love it
- the goal celebrations (mental)
- the football itself (fast / always attacking / fighting spirit)
- one thing I really love about the british football fans is that they start / "create" songs out of situations. I hope you know what I mean :)

* thats what we don't really have in europe. you have the curva with the ultras, they chant etc but the other parts of the ground don't really join in the songs, just on very few occasions

What season did you go to the Arsenal - Tottenham game? Right now, especially since the move, our lot seem to struggle to get it going whatever the occasion. Though I should add that I can only really base that on last season and what I've seen on TV as I've only been to one home game this term. They are just frustrating.

zueri - March 18, 2008 10:37 AM (GMT)
I think it was 03 or 04... It was the match where Henry scored a goal by running on his own through the tottenham midfield and defence. He then celebrated in front of the tottenham fans

Gunner Michael - March 18, 2008 12:59 PM (GMT)
I know the one - wasn't a bad derby I have to say. Very surprised to hear you rating any English atmosphere of the past ten years that highly though, derby or not.

zueri - March 18, 2008 01:12 PM (GMT)
It's a bit hard for me to discribe why as my english is not very good but worth a try: One thing that I really don't like in Europe is that a lof of fans in the ultras stand sometimes don't care whats happening on the pitch; A very nice scene on the pitch or a good goal chance but yet the fans just continue with singing. I did notice this in a lot of Europeans stadiums.

I'm also very surprised that in the other thread (best home support) somebody has bayern munich in his top five for the best home support. I've been to many games in munich and I was always disappointed with their support / atmosphere...

I think that is good and bad tbh.

It is great that they sing throughout regardless but sometimes the spontaneity of certain songs make them more enjoyable!

Mix the organisation of continental fans with English spontaneity and you'd be on to a winner!

Gunner Michael - March 18, 2008 05:10 PM (GMT)
I don't know about that - the fact that they are so organised probably detracts from their spontaneity somewhat. But combine our spontaneity with a country that hasn't done everything in its power to force out and alienate the passionate fans who make a bit of noise, whilst dilluting those who are left with a large proportion of modern day parasites, and you'll be onto a winner. Kind of like us 20 or 30 years ago I'm informed.

Mix their organisation in terms of getting things done/protests etc. with the English style of vocal support and it would be superb!

Regarding style of support, I like it when we do the spontaneous/witty stuff for most of the game, then launch into a long, continuous ("European style") chant or song for the last 10-15 minutes of the game.
