Title: Football Songs With History
Description: Deep Meaning Songs

BHB - January 2, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
Any songs that have a deep historical meaning to your club or support that are still sung today at the match?

Here's my one to throw into the ring, convinced its the best football song of all time - Poor Scouser Tommy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-glvuTZMiEA&feature=related

Not the best clip of it, and sung too fast there, but just to highlight it is still sung every game in the ground. Back catalogues for the boozer don't count, I'd be here forever, but they'll never make it into the ground, so....

The words - read them:

Let me tell you the story of a poor boy
Who was sent far away from his home
To fight for his king and his country
And also the old folks back home

So they put him in a Highland division
Sent him off to a far foreign land
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands
And there's nothing to see but the sands

In a battle that started next morning
Under a Libyan sun
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun

As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
With the blood gushing out of his head (of his head)
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
These were the last words he said...

Oh...I am a Liverpudlian
I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing, I like to shout
I get thrown out quite a lot (every week)

We support the team that's dressed in red
A team that we all know
A team that we call Liverpool
And to glory we will go

We've won the League, we've won the Cup
We've been to Europe too
We played the Toffees for a laugh
And we left them feeling blue - Five Nil !

One two
One two three
One two three four
Five nil !

Rush scored one
Rush scored two
Rush scored three
And Rush scored four!

The last part was added later, after a 5-0 derby win, then the Ian Rush bit added again after his 4 goals at Goodison. The early part has been sung since being penned by an old Kopite, it's a song about a Poor Scouser Tommy - "Tommy" being the word for a British soldier (as opposed to the German "Gerry"). It's about one of the thousands of Scouse Tommies of our grandads and great grandads generation sent out to be slaughtered in the desert in Libya, fighting for the Highland division during the second World War.

You'll struggle to find many football songs about that kind of thing - there's a challenge for you!

Also this one sung by the Kings Regiment back in the day...first world war I think...

tune - http://www.army.mod.uk/linkedfiles/kings/kings_up_hill.mp3

The King's are coming up the hill, boys,
The King's are coming up the hill, boys,
They all laugh at us, they all scoff at us,
They all say our days are numbered
Oh, to be a Kingo, Victorious are we,
If you want to win the cup
then you'd better hurry up,
'Cos the King's are coming up the hill
Victorious and glorious,
One bottle of beer between the four of us,
Glory be to God there isn't any more of us,
'Cos one of us would drink the bastard lot!

Then changed to a football song that we still sing today. If you research a bit of the King's history you will find that the 4th, 34th and 40th Regiment fought together in the Lancashire Brigade, in the battle of Spion Kop. It is due to the high loss of life of our local soldiers that we as a club chose the bastion of football terraces that is renowned world wide as the Spion Kop as a tribute to the men of Lancashire who paid the ultimate sacrifice

Our words to it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifw-iEBY7As

better version during this, taken from 1968 or so I think - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ZWd9GRKSo

The reds are coming up the hill boys,
The reds are coming up the hill boys.
They all laugh at us, they all mock at us
They all say our days are numbered.
Born to be a Scouser, Victorious are we,
If you wanna win a cup then you'd better hurry up
Cos we're Liverpool FC
Victorious and glorious
We took the Gwladys Street between four of us
And glory be to God there isn't anymore of us
Cos the 4 of us would take the fcuking lot

Over to you.....

FIELDS OF ANFIELD ROAD

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling :
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Chorus :
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away..
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

A LIVERBIRD UPON MY CHEST

Here's a song about a football team
The greatest team you've ever seen
A team that play total Football
They've won the league, Europe and all.

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

With Kenny Dalglish on the ball
He was the greatest of them all
And Ian Rush, four goals or two
Left Evertonians feeling blue

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

Now if you go down Goodison Way
Hard luck stories you hear each day
There's not a trophy to be seen
'Cos Liverpool have swept them clean

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

Now on the glorious 10th of May
There's laughing reds on Wembley Way
We're full of smiles and joy and glee
It's Everton 1 and Liverpool 3

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

Now on the 20th of May
We're laughing still on Wembley Way
Those Evertonians are feeling blue
It's Liverpool 3 and Everton 2

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

And as we sang round Goodison Park
With crying blues all in a nark
They're probably crying still
at Liverpool 5 and Everton nil.

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

We Remember them with pride
Those mighty reds of Shankly's side
And Kenny's boys of '88
There's never been a side so great

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

Now back in 1965
When great Bill Shankly was alive
We're playing Leeds, the score's 1-1
When it fell to the head of Ian St John

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

On April 15th '89
What should have been a joyous time
Ninety six Friends, we all shall miss
And all the Kopites want justice (JUSTICE!)

A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May

WE ALL LIVE IN A RED AND WHITE KOP

On a Saturday afternoon
We support a team called Liverpool
And we sing until we drop (and we sail up to the top)
On the famous Spion Kop (of our red and white Spion Kop)

We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop

We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop

In a town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed the seas
And he told me of his pride
They were a famous football team
So we trailed to Anfield Road,
Singing songs of victory
And there we found the holy ground,
Of our hero Bill Shankly
We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop

We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop

Because they've got phrases like 'up to our knees in fenian (catholic nationalist) blood' in them, and their all just very naughty.

nick the jack - January 3, 2008 11:17 AM (GMT)
For Swansea 'cant help falling in love with you' sometimes sung with real passion. 'swansea o swansea' is probably our official song, written by one of my old school teachers. 'chear up sleepy jean' is sometimes played, just with the Cardiff managers name put in, that might sound tacky but it used to be played just before ko. The music would stop and we would sing the chorus extremely loud. That song probably holds my favourite moment. Not deep and meaningful, but a laugh and all together sort of feeling.

Other clubs 'you'll never walk alone' is one of my favourite songs of all time. 'blowing bubbles' is good, just it seems to be WHU's only song.

And the tims singing their pro IRA tenche.

Although to be fair, I dont give a tench what any teams fans sing, its only a song after all, and any noise should be welcome in a ground!
Many folk dont feel the same way though and I accept their point. It just doesn't bother me.

There are a lot of songs about the Busby Babes/Munich, that obviously have a deep meaning....

There are loads of verses to We'll Never Die. Can't be arsed typing the full lot out (Yes, I do actually know the verses :D ) Anyone got a c + p? Preferably from 'United's flag is deepest red'.

One of my favourites....

If ever they're playing in your town
Get yourself to that football ground
Take a lesson, you will see
Football taught by Matt Busby
Oh Manchester
Manchester United
A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes
They deserve to be knighted

Doesn't look that great written down, but I've been at away games a few years back where it's been sung continuously by the whole end for about 25 minutes. Sounds brilliant.

BHB - January 3, 2008 05:07 PM (GMT)
I was just thinking more along the lines of non-football related stuff really.

Everyone's got songs about ex-players, managers etc. I'm more on about things related to the city, heritage, history of the club etc. Like the examples posted above, songs adapted from war stories and that.

Another good example is Portsmouth with their "Pompy Chimes" I think. Big history behind that stuff.

ML - ITFC - January 3, 2008 05:30 PM (GMT)
Can't think of any at Ipswich. I've heard how we used to (back in the days of terraces) have some imaginative and brilliant songs but many have disappeared along with the terraces. We have some original songs still, just not any to do with heritage etc.

But have to agree, Poor Scouser Tommy is excellent. I think I've heard you sing it on telly and always liked it.

They will be undoubtedly in pubs before the games but they've been cracking down on sectarian singing for years now, and fans make a concentrated effort not to refer to them. Personally I think fans should be able to sing what they want but it's not my club.

In reply to the topic at hand, 'Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner' and 'Strolling' used to be sung by the Shed in a very YNWA type manner, scarves in the air etc. Couldn't tell you the history behind it though.

Personal favourites that strike a cord

We are just one of those teams,
That you see now and then;
We often score six,
But we seldom score ten,
"We beat 'em at home,
And we beat and we beat 'em away,
We kill any b*stards,
That get in our way.
We are the pride of all Europe,
The cock of the North,
We hate the Scousers, the
Cockneys of course - and Leeds
We are United,
Without any doubt,
We are the Manchester boys.
Ah-na na nan=na na na OOOOOHHHHHH"

If I die in the Kippax Street, who-oh, who-oh,
If I die in the Kippax Street, who-oh, who-oh,
If I die in the Kippax Street,
There'll be ten blue b*stards at my feet,
Who-oh, oh who-oh, who-oh.

Use your head and use your feet, who-oh, who-oh,
Use your head and use your feet, who-oh, who-oh,
Use your head and use your feet,
Ten blue b*stards at your feet,

If my bones do not mend, who-oh, who-oh,
If my bones do not mend, who-oh, who-oh,
If my bones do not mend,
Take me back to the Stretford End
Who-oh, oh who-oh, who-oh.

If I die and go to Hell, who-oh, who-oh,
Me and Devil will get on well, who-oh, who-oh,
Cos he hates Lee and I hate Bell,
Me and the Devil will get on well
Who-oh, oh who-oh, who-oh.

I suppose it just fizzled out really, it wasn't as synonymous with the club as something like YNWA is, although I've been told it was amazing. Some fans were trying to get it started up again but it's just impossible nowadays unless 60%> of the crowd know it and the tune.

Probably my favourite of all time, heard away in Europe in the ground, few aways and more at home this year now loads of us together, cracking song, and goeson forever.

I watch my team from the Crispin Lane
Under the old Busfields Stand
Dirty Old Stand, Dirty Old Stand
Wrexham town, its a lovely old town

Oh Betty the Tramp, she lives in a cave
In Caergwle, in Caergwle
She eats the chips, off the King St. Floor
In Wrexham Town, Its a lovely old town

I travel away in a transit van
and all I drink, is Wrexham Lager (Wrexham Lager, Wrexham Lager)
I drink all day, and I drink all night
I go home stoned, to the lovely old town (used to be .....stoned, beat up my wife)

We hate the scum, from the Sealand Rd
They had a tramp, his name was Ally......Mcnally Mcnally
His wifes a slag, she's shagged the whole team
and now she's got AIDS and a dose of E.D.

Alex Hamilton, he didnt like our town
so we went to his house and we burnt it down

Fileds of anfield road isnt exactly a song with "History", it was only mid 90's that liverpool started singing this, not long after you played Celtic, where the original version was often sung.

Anyway, these fields of Anfield Road, i take it you mean Stanley Park, as there arent many fields round there!!!!

See post number 3 - young lad posted that up, I say its not exactly what I was thinking. All explained in the first couple of posts. Keep up Scouse.

I'd like to teach the world to sing, just like the Stretford End
We've got Alex Stepney in the goal and Denis is the King
Georgie Best's our superstar and Willie's on the wing
We hate Man City 'cos they're tenche, United are the team
United, United etc etc

The version of the calypso currently sung is just the chorus by the way, same as 'Hello we are the Busby Boys'

Seems that songs keep getting bits clipped off them as the years go by.

Even the National Anthem originally had four verses.

Don't know if it really meets the criteria, but I can't help but put this one up. We had a magnificent recital in the second half of the Reading game - best moment of the season so far for me...

My eyes have seen the glory of the cups at White Hart Lane
My eyes have seen the glory of the cups at White Hart Lane
My eyes have seen the glory of the cups at White Hart Lane
And the Spurs go marching on

Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
And the Spurs go marching on

The pride of North London, we're the kings of White Hart Lane
The pride of North London, we're the kings of White Hart Lane
The pride of North London, we're the kings of White Hart Lane
And the Spurs go marching on

Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
And the Spurs go marching on

We're loyal Spurs supporters and we go to every game
We're loyal Spurs supporters and we go to every game
We're loyal Spurs supporters and we go to every game
And the Spurs go marching on

Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
Glory Glory, Hallelujah!
And the Spurs go marching on

Just re-read the thread and realised I hadn't read the question properly

The football song with the oldest history that I know about is "You fat bastard" that some clubs still direct at the opposition goal keeper

Orignally sung for fatty foulke in the late 1800's

I thought the "who ate all the pies" one was as well but according to Wikipedia that's an urban myth

And i'm sure there were tons of die-hard Coventry fans at that little concert making notes on every song sung, editing them so they were suitable for football grounds. I heard that most football chants originate from pathetic childrens concerts in Liverpool.

and this one is our club anthem

Lets all sing together
Play up Sky Blues
While we sing together
We will never lose
Proud Posh or Cobblers,
Oysters or anyone
They shan't defeat us
We'll fight till the game is won

Not about our city, but you can tell its historic because we're singing about teams like Peterborough, Cobblers (?) and Oysters (?) who i presume we're all top division sides when we started singing this.

* Awaits BHB post informing me that in fact this song originated in Liverpool and that the Liverpool childrens choir were in fact the first people to sing this..

One that gets sung in the Lower North:

Me name is Edward Ebeneezer Jerimiah Brown,
I'm a football supporter of Ipswich Town,
Wherever they play you'll find me,
I have'nt missed a game since I was three,
With me scarf and me rattle and me big rossette,
Singing where was the goalie when the ball was in the net,
Follow the Town up or down,
I'm Edward Ebeneezer,
Jerimiah Brown,
But everybody call me Ted

definitely the most poignant / moving one of all. (i'll type it out if you won't :P )

United's flag is deepest red,
It covered all our Munich dead.
Before their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts' blood died it's every fold.
So raise United's banner high,
Beneath it's shade we'll live and die.
Keep the faith and have no fear,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.
We'll never die, we'll never die,
We'll never die, we'll never die.
We'll keep the red flag fling high,
'Cause Man United will never die.

Not sure about the history of our club song, but I think it's from the Southern League days (mid 70s) and these days it sounds extremely dated. It apparently won a BBC radio competition in the 70s or 80s to find the best official club song, beating 'Blue is the Colour' from Chelsea, which came 2nd. Very few people these days know the tune, let alone the lyrics, and many of those that do don't particularly like it, but it's still a part of the club's history as far as I'm concerned. These days the only time it's ever heard is very occasionally as the teams run out at midweek games:

Stones Club Song (link no 3 in the table).

Eleven good men in a football team,
Make a team of great renown.
Black and gold are the colours they wear,
And they play for Maidstone town.

Maidstone has the cream,
In Kent's best football team.

Stones, Stones, come on the Stones,
Maidstone can beat 'em today.
Stones, Stones, let's have you Stones,
Whether it's home or away.
Let's have the goals, bags of lovely goals.
Don't let the other lot win.
So, Maidstone United:
Let's bang another one in.

When they go out on the field today,
Let's give a mighty great roar.
Show them who we appreciate,
Every time they score.

Maidstone has the cream,
In Kent's best football team.

Stones, Stones, come on the Stones,
Maidstone can beat 'em today.
Stones, Stones, let's have you Stones,
Whether it's home or away.
Let's have the goals, bags of lovely goals.
Don't let the other lot win.
So, Maidstone United:
Let's bang another one in.

The ref blows time and you're out with your mates,
Drinking in your nearest pub.
Raise your glass to the Maidstone town,
United Football Club.

Maidstone has the cream,
In Kent's best football team.

Stones, Stones, come on the Stones,
Maidstone can beat 'em today.
Stones, Stones, let's have you Stones,
Whether it's home or away.
Let's have the goals, bags of lovely goals.
Don't let the other lot win.
So, Maidstone United:
Let's bang another one...
Let's have another one...
Let's bang another one in.

Let's bang another one in.

Ipswich do have an old resonant song, called Edward Ebenezer. Several attempts to resurrect it have failed, possibly due to the "Music Hall" style of tune being out of kilter with modern music. It does get the occassional airing, mostly at away matches.

Ipswich !

Me name is Edward Ebeneezer Jerimiah Brown,
I'm a football supporter of Ipswich Town,
Wherever they play you'll find me,
I have'nt missed a game since I was three,
With me scarf and me rattle and me big rossette,
Singing where was the goalie when the ball was in the net,
Follow the Town up or down,
I'm Edward Ebeneezer,
Jerimiah Brown,
But everybody call me Ted

2-4-6-8 who do I appreciate,
Is'nt hard to tell,
Just you take a closer look at me,
And you'll know damn well

WHO ?

Ipswich, Ipswich, Come on the Town

His name is Edward Ebeneezer Jerimiah Brown,
He's a football supporter of Ipswich Town,
Wherever they play there he'll be,
He has'nt missed a game since he was three,
With his scarf and a rattle and a big rossette,
Singing where was the goalie when the ball was in the net,
He's Edward Ebeneezer,
Jerimiah Brown,
But everybody call him Ted

Football, Football,
Who's the greatest of them all,
Put it to the test,
Come to Portman Road on a Saturday,
And you'll see the best

WHO ?

Ipswich, Ipswich, Come on the Town,
Ipswich, Ipswich, Come on the Town

Thanks to Pride of Anglia for saving me having to remember all the words

Oh yes sorry i forget that every single football song originated from Liverpool.

My bad, should never of put it on.

To be fair, he said History and that song doesn't have any history.

Well considering the reason we have more than one cathedral is because one got bombed out during the war i think it does have some links to our history as a city
