Title: Flag waving trend
Description: the latest in club organised atmosphere

jimllfixitfc - September 25, 2006 01:43 AM (GMT)
It seems to be the latest trend at the moment for clubs to be handing out these little flags with the official badge on them to be waved when instructed to do so to generate atmosphere. Chelsea have done it and so have leicester now as well. Except of course it doesn't help the atmosphere at all.

I could repeat the same sorts of things that get said on here all the time but instead i could just show you this piece of video which just about sums up the whole lot really.

With all due respect to Leicester City fans lets count up how many wanky things there re wrong with this video:

1) Clone allseater stadium aptly dubbed 'the crisp bowl'
2) Scores of empty seats (too expensive)
3) Pathetic attempt at PA lead singing drowning out any chance of real singing
4) Pathetic flags being half arsedly waved for no particular reason

It just sums up modern football. another couple of years and it will resemble american sport then it will be time to call it a day

West Ham gave out those stupid plastic sticks that you bang together when we played Bolton in the cup last year, apparently to add to the atmosphere.

The way the game is going I feel more likely to give up with West Ham than I ever have at times of the Bond Scheme, relegation etc.

Please can we have our game back.

The most annoying aspect is those tooters (cant think of a better name) they sell usually at big games - all they create is a frustrating dull drone through out the stadium - it ruined any chance of generating an atmosphere when Wycombe got to FA Cup semi v Liverpool. They are brought by one game a season Dads to give to their kid whoafter 30 mins relaised he would rather be on his playstation at home. mind you despite taking 20,000 to Villa Pk only 5,000 of our fnas realised you are supposed to shout and sing for your team the others thouight it were cinema. Yes it still annoys me 5 years on !!!!

those flags are embarrasing. they gave them out free and i didnt take one :) :(

I just find the whole thing a bid strange, the club do everything they can to rid the game of any atmosphere (albeit unintentionally). They hike up ticket prices, hand out banning orders like there's no tomorrow, refuse to back supporters with standing etc. Then to try and create some atmosphere they try the most pathetic intiatives i.e. singing day at Highbury, little flags at Chelsea, strange clapper things you bang together as already mention and blaring out defening music right up until ko etc.

It's just annoying because it's so obvious what needs to be done to improve atmosphere. If they really want to improve the atmosphere just let the fans stand and create it naturally.

It's just the type of fans you get at football these days.

I know of one guy who has been reported to stewards for simply singing (multiple times), with one of the guys who complained about him to spend much of the match chatting to the guys behind him about Heineken cdup rugby and how David James (yes, James) is the best keeper he's ever seen in an Arsenal shirt.

Give us all strength.

Sorry Leicester fans, but that is a deeply sad little clip. Knowing that Leicester are one of the few clubs, if not the only club, to actually convene a meeting with fans, stewards, the local council etc to try and do something about the heavy handed stewarding I can't imagine they're too delighted either.

The thing is I like the idea of flags at football and clubs showing colour. It's just sad that the club itself has to organise these things rather than the fans.

Agree Kev, but dealing with the health and safety people is enough to make anybody lose the will to live, let alone organise flags..

Ha, get me, Mrs Negative!

Health and Safety, useless the lot of them, telling us how to live our lives  .
The flags do add a bit of colour and if people put a bit more heart into waving them then it may look alrite but still don't particually like them.

Nothing like this happens at Ipswich apart from when stalls on FA Cup days sell those hooters, which are fun for the little kids but sooooo anoying for the rest.

Want standing back so we can create our own Atmosphere!!!

which american sport?, I've been to a baseball and american football game (both in pittsburgh) and the atmosphere is great, they also have tons of ultra soccer groups now. A lot more freedom though, I bought my ticket and it didn't have a seat number just block number so you can go where you want, and a lot of people stand throughout and the games lasts for hours. I've seen the american ultra groups letting off flares, huge streamer displays loads of flags the scene is booming in the US.

If we're talking flags at football, here's my one at Villa Park when we played there a few weeks back...
