Title: Glory Years

nick the jack - June 25, 2007 09:15 AM (GMT)
On Saturday night I watched the Swansea glory years DVD. In case your not aware. Swansea's greatest years were the late 70's to the early 80's.
78 - div 4 prom
79 - div 3 prom
80 - div 2 12th
81 - div 2 prom
82 - div 1 6th
83 - div 1 21st
84 - div 2 21st
85 - div 3 20th
86 - div 3 22nd
Back to division 4, also in 85 we nearly went out of business. I wonder if this is the greatest football decade ever, good and bad. Since 1984 we haven't been back in the top 2 divisions.

When in div 1 we toopped it on 3 seperate occasions, including March. Imagine the Mourinho v Fergie head to head being Swansea back in those days. I find it amazing that for one season, we were possibly the most talked about team in Britain/Europe?. We beat Man Utd and Liverpool and could have won the league. I'm interested to know if your club has ever had a golden era and what happened.
In case you wondering John Toshack was our manager.

Not so golden for us at Wycombe. We were a very big fish in non league circles and winning the Conference in 93 topped winning the Trophy in 91 and 93. In 94 your boys beat us in the Southern Area final of the Auto Mickey mouse cup and brought over 2000 fans down on a Tuesday night to celebrate getting to Wembley - however the same seaosn we reached Wembley again in the play off final and beat PNE 4-2 in one of our finest ever displays. The next year was amazing we finished 6th in the old 2nd Division (now League 1) and missed out on the play offs because the keague was 'rearranging' itself to suit the Premiership. Alan Smith then took over from O'Neill and destroyed everything that was great and the spirit. We then hobbled on from 1994 to 2003 in the same division never finishing higher than 12th (but the FA Cup semi in 2001) and in 2003 were relegated with aplomb. :(

Aberdeen fans favourite topic...the 80s :D

Won the league in 79/80 @ ER....5-0! Fergie running onto the pitch to celebrate. :D
Also won the league 83/84 and 84/85...still the last scottish club outside the OF to win th eleague which is pretty sad actually....should've won it in '91 though.

Won the scottish cup in '82, '83, '84, '86 and '90.

League cup in 85/86 and 89/90.

And the best of the lot the european cup winners cup in 82/83...beating Bayern Munich in the quarters and Real Madrid in the final and beat European Cup winners Hamburg in the European Super Cup.

In '86 I think it was had an amazing chance to win the European Cup, a last minute goal though put IFK Gothenburg through on away goals though in the quarters. This is the year that Steau won it and many say Aberdeen were better than both finalists....Steau and Barca.

We were some fkn team!

Pity I wasnae born 10 years earlier :(

Although I wasn't around, I've heard many times about Towns golden era. One being the Uefa Cup win with Sir Bobby and the other being when we were promoted from the old Division 2 to Division 1 (the old top flight) and won the league straight away, the only team to have ever done it in successive seasons! B) With Sir Alf Ramsey.

Early 1900's.
1950's cup kings.
Or 92-97 during the Keegan era.

Mid 60's through to early 70's was our first. FA Cup, League Cup, Cup winners cup.

After that, we get to the more familiar period of the 90's. FA Cup twice, League Cup, ECWC again, Super Cup.

2005 it all kicked off again.

Don't forget the Full Members Cup of 86 and 90, those have got to be the highlights.

The song goes, 'my eyes have seen the glory of the cups at White Hart Lane...'

We've had a couple of well-documented 'glory eras'. I started supporting them in 1991, just in time to see us beat Forest to win the FA cup.

It's not exactly been glory glory since then. Hopefully something's just around the corner though...
