Update on this story... the Health and Safety Executive are carrying out emergency tests on various strains of letti to see exactly what damage they could cause when deployed with viscious intent. So far, my informants tell me that the Cos packs a mean punch, closely followed by the Savoy and Iceburg but the twin barrelled Jem lettuce will be removed from shelves with immediate effect as it has been proved that anybody subjected to sustained attack from a sawn off Jem could result in serious abrasions. This incident has caused the immediate and precautionary removal of asparagas spears from supermarket shelves
