Title: US flamethower
Description: 1:35 old kit TAMIYA

Loo CK - July 4, 2006 11:50 AM (GMT)
The recent hectic schedule means I had to withdraw my Whermacht figure for a more modest 1:35 scale kit for the figure section. I thought that I would pit my current painting skills on a old kit with reasonably OK details for a start.

The basic kit was from a set of 4 figures released by Tamiya in the mid 70s. They are in the midst of throwing a grenage, firing a Tommy, throwing a grenade and this flamer.

Details of course do not share the quality of current kits. You can judge this yourself. To slightly improve it, I did minor surgery and additions with stretched sruce especially for laces, hollowed up the sleeves and will remodel the fingers.

this overhead shot show the painting on the sleeves at an advanced stage to test out the color contrast of highlight and shadows. Still not obvious enough

most of the tunic is in an advance stage of painting while the pants and hands needs a lot of work together with the feet and tank+weapon. All this is thanks to half a bottle of chicken essence. If all goes well, I should finish it in another session with last minute touch ups later.

this is probably around the actual size

Nice job there. Is it done yet??

Alpha7 - July 5, 2006 12:07 AM (GMT)
I remember this kit. The proportions are a little off. The lower body is too small and as usual with the early kits, his hands don't grab the weapon. Well, at least he's got ears! :P

Nice paint job there. I guess you are more of a Shep Paine follower. Is that static grass I see?

Loo CK - July 5, 2006 04:38 AM (GMT)
It static grass mixed with prefinished Ho scaled grass mat on paper that you can easily cut to size and pVA on any base.

Becky: the kit is targetted for final painting tonight, time permitting. A long way more to go.

Its nearly there. Will need one more night.... give me one more night.....

a bit more touch up and then to detail the tanks and add straps, gun holster, a detail here and there, and finally some markings.

Eagled eyes forumers are encouraged to spot mistakes so that I can work on it.
Comments welcomed.

No eagle eyes here Loo, just a pair of old eyes staring at too small figures for too long and likely to be looking at even smaller figures. The fluorescent lighting must be throwing off the highs and shadows so its hard to comment. The only thingy that comes to mine is the color of the hose of which I have no idea whether it should be brown or black (rubber). The other is perhaps you can add some pastels to his knee to simulate him being in combat and mucking around on the ground.

Incidentally the grass is very well done with the yellows and greens. Too bad you couldn't squeeze in the MG 1/16. Perhaps if you didn't sleep the whole of next week you might still make it.

Loo,

Too bad your 1/16 figure can't make it.... But I see your flame thrower guy looks very good :-)

As beachbum said about the hilight and shadow of the face, maybe is the image size and the flouroscent lighting....

I'd like to suggest to add the helmet straps (loosen) to have those Holywood GI look. Some 5 o'clock shades, and paint chips on the tank...

CPTan
PS. Due to my mom visit, I'll have to reschedule and sacrifice my modelling time... now burning midnite oil on my 1/16 OIF figure like hell... Due to the rush, no time taking pic lar, maybe will try to post some next week....

Loo CK - July 6, 2006 04:04 AM (GMT)
Cp, guess we will see it at the Com then.

I definitely need to touch up the helmet. Its blue tacked on at the moment.

The highlights are not evident in the photos. I am scared shitless to put in any more contrast. Perhaps I will bring it to Sat's meet CK, for yours and Arqrillion's critical review. We should call this "don't give face session!"

I am still at 2 minds on whether to redo the strap buckles but its already 6th of July. ARRRGGHHHH!!!!! 1 more dio to go! and the beemer to finish. Thats 80% there.

CK, the hose is black. Thats just the original color of the wire insulation :P. I have added a few details to the tank since. Some ribbing here and there, valves,.....
The gun needs some too but not going to do it. Too complicated.

The pants. This is going to kill me as I can't get it to look nice. Will attempt a recoat tonite.

Thanks for the comments. Like I say,: don't give face, just hantam.......I can take it

This will be my last pic update before final wrap up with the base.

after the major painting was done, the whole kit was 'futured' for the arm decals to go in and some minor turpentine wash to accent deep creases.

as usual, pigments are added after a coat of matt varnish.

the hands were reengineered for a better grip especially at the thumb and pointer.
