Title: Coming Soon!
Description: Hasegawa 1/48 F-14B Tomcat.
twong - October 20, 2009 04:23 PM (GMT)
Some in progress shots of my latest project. This is my first Hasegawa 1/48 F-14 Tomcat. Yes, another Hasegawa Tomcat. I know, I am late to the party.
I am using Two bobs VF-103 Final Tomcat Cruise decals, Eduard color zoom photo etch for the cockpit, True Details resin seats and a few other resin detail sets for the bomb racks, BOL rails and Lantirn pod pylon.
Here is where I am so far. Not much done but progress is going steadily.

Thanks for looking and comments are welcomed.

Mr. B,
Thanks! The cockpit panels are from Eduard pre-painted photo etch sets. Kind of like a decal. Here is what the photo etch set looks like.

These panels are from my Hasegawa 1/48 F-4J I posted months ago on here. They use the Eduard pre-painted photo etch sets too.

Might need to pick similar items for my Phantoms as well

Small update. I was painting the fuselage and dropped it. A few areas popped open and now need repairing. I have to refill and sand after I already painted. Bummer. Areas circled in red show where popped open and needs fixing again.
Fuselage intake trunk separated from main body and left a gap.

Main body separated where horizontal stab goes.

Glove vane separated where wings go into main body.

Hope that my Hasgawa tomcat F-14D will have a good finishing like the Pros sifu here, me with my impatience when gluing and sanding. :( But for now better concentrate on my ongoing italeri F-14B kit. Any comments on the kit is most welcome.
Cheerssss........mates

Oh... I have an Academy 1/48 F-14A which I plan to go with two bob's Jolly roger decals I bought earlier. I also had True Detail ejection seat and Eduards PE to go with it. It's exactly the same as your project here.... except u are doing hasegawa. I'll start that once I finished my Budapest Diorama..... hehehe. Your pics will be good guidance for me.
Additionally I also planning to add Verlinden's update set (showing the avionics and Vulcan gun) I bought years ago for it. It's been sitting too long on my shelf.

Thanks Cag200 and Flylice80.
Cag200, Hasegawa kit is very complex especially the intakes. Fit is not that good especially for Hasegawa but is better than most other model companies. The Hasegawa Tomcat will require patience along with some filling and sanding.
Flylice80, I look forward to seeing your VF-103 Tomcat. Sounds like a nice project. We can compare the two different kits in same version and add on accessories. The True Details seats and Eduard photo etch will fit right in the Academy kit. I used it on an earlier Academy F-14A with VF-84 markings.
Little update since the disaster. This kit is fighting me all the way to the bitter end. The faults are my own not due to the kit. I dropped it while painting and had to redo some areas and also dropped it again while decaling. Some more areas broke but I give up. The kit is winning the battle as I am too tired to fight with it anymore. It is just a hobby.
Here is where it stands. Mostly decaled and weathered, just waiting for final assembly of all the parts shown in picture number 4.

Terrence..
wow..very nice, I like Jolly roger, and that Eduard pre-painted photo etch sets sure make life easier..

Thanks Masterqq. The color photo etch does save a lot of time trying to paint all those little dials. They are fairly inexpensive too.
Another small update. Was up late till 1am putting her together. Still need some small stuff added to be complete.

Sorry for the bad photos. Not much light available when I used the camera. I need to get a photo booth setup.
Another small update.
I got some of the weapons weathered and ready to be installed. The (2) LGB's are weathered with my version of the salt weathering technique. I made salt water with regular table salt and waited for it to dissolve, then I used an eyedropper to drop pellets of the salt water on the bombs and just blew the droplet with my breath to make it spread and give it a varied pattern then let it dry. It still needs some cleaning up but here is the effect of the salt weathering on the LGB. They still need the stripes and the dark brown between the forward fins.

The AIM-9's to be added, subtle weathering added.

Thanks Kwongyan!
Stalled on the build and so close to finishing too. I have family visiting and will finish it as soon as they leave.

The amount of times this bird flamed out and entered into a flat spin, you should consider putting a mattress under your work desk.
Looking good so far. Keep at it and eventually you'll win over the kit ^_^

Thanks PoohBear,
The reason it was dropped twice was because I was rushing and became careless. I was thinking of putting some type of foam around my work bench. Maybe put some of that airport runway foam for when airliners have to make emergency landings.
