First of all, I have no idea where to put this finished build so mod if this is the wrong place please remove it to its correct location

Managed to finish the hand grenades ^_^ . Type 97 Japanese hand grenade and M39 German Egg Bomb.

I decided to make them as if they were the real thing which you might see in the museum. Had to add weights inside to make them heavy, add rust, scratch etc.

The rust was made using tamiya spray can colour copper + dull red + tamiya wheathering set + salt technique which I learned from broder ari's thread hehe thanks bro. My first experience playing with wheathering ^_^

Broder black, it was quite difficult to find one on this, i found them accidently in 1 shop and the manufacture made like 3 different sets of hand grenades if i'm not mistaken but this was the last one that i managed to find.

Now i just need to find a casing this week and buy one of those sponge thingy to make this look real you know like one of those movies where they open a suitcase and there is a deadly explosive inside of them ^_^

yeah... looks real to me... to real to believe it is a plastic to me...

As for the hand grenade cap, since the real one is made out of copper so making rust on the grenade cap wont be realistic, after learning about copper, i found that copper after quite some time tends to turn into dark red colour that looks like rust but has a smooth surface compared to rust. I tried to duplicate that colour and it worked tehehehe.

Be careful disarming those grenades. They are old and tend to be unstable. Really nice job on those grenades. Very realistic looking. Love the weathering.

I tried the "salt technique" before but yours is very defined and confined to small area.

Yea...in overseas you can easily buy this 1:1 kit.
I remember when I was student in Box Hill, Melbourne, I came across 1:1 M-16 & AK-47 kits. I regretted not buying them.

oh i found the M-16 too hehe. But its too big for me to be building it.

As for the salt technique, i had to combine 2 types of salt in order to make it work which is using the pure sea salt which is like super expensive and the fine salt that looks like very fine sand.

The trick is normally, after finish spraying, people would just brush off the salt but i used the washing under running water tap technique, which kinda gave the rust like surface. I dont know why it works but using a brush only, didn't give the type of surface that you can see here. It seems that by just brushing off the salt, has a quite similar effect to the hairspray technique. Hope this helps others ^_^

Very clever of you to wash the salt away under running water instead of rubbing or brush.

What did you use to stick the fine salt to the surface?
