Title: Discharge At Dawn, Arnhem 1945
Description: Completed work

YongA01 - October 2, 2009 02:32 PM (GMT)
Hi all, just completed this... it is a wounded soldier discharged at dawn. It is the second figure of the old VP P.O.W with Hornet wounded head. The 1st figure I painted early this year with the charcoal effect. This one I tried to paint in all shadow (figure, pillar and roof) to reflect the dawn sun light. The figure also receive a bit of yellow into the highlight.. All comment and critiques welcome

Pls note the cigaratte has smoke, need to pay lots of focus to see it...if you are lucky...

Allan,
the play of light has been done to very good effect here. I like this better than the charcoal one more so because the background managed to bring this effect to its full potential. I have only one small comment. I would have thought that darker shoes and leggings would have pushed the effect further.

Did you drop some cigarette ash on the floor too? :P

ps: time to publish a book.....

without any explanation... the cool hue does give an impression of a COLD CLOUDY DAWN... you portray the sun is at the north-east of the figure right...??

ahaaa... of course i know close to nothing about figure painting... i just love to look in detail of a great masterpiece...

A book is indeed a good idea...

Hi Ah Loo - thanks for the positive feedback. You need to pay more attention to see the ashes dropping from the cigaratte to the floow..ha! Writing book, no energy and... surely make a big loss..

Hi William - the sun shine from North East at 45 degree at 8:35am GMT+8 to be exact..... :D

by the way... is that a string of cotton for the smoke???

YongA01 - October 3, 2009 11:52 AM (GMT)
Ok let's compromise at 8:44am..ok!!!

The smoke is made out of a carefuly selected fine strain of cotton...

Nice shadow effect. Came of very well. The expression says it all. Being so used to dirt on everything my teeny weeny comment would be that maybe or maybe not the adding of a bit of dirt and dust on the pants and maybe a bit of the feldbluse may have added to the tired, worn-wounded effect.

You're right I can see smoke coming off the ciggie. :)

Yup, I see smoke ^_^

Is his shadow painted in too?

You've got my vote for a book.

Hey buddy,
I like the 'warmed by the fire' one better. Since I'm not ready to attempt anything like that yet I should keep my comments strictly as a novice calling it as I see it where playing with light is concerned. Overall it's too greenish for me especially the field gray tunic supposedly in the dawn sunlight. The red came out pretty well so it couldn't be the studio lighting. But then, hey it's art. On the other hand, from the viewpoint of one who butters his bread painting figures there's one thing I can confidently criticise on though and that's the blood stain. Honestly, it's amatuerish. Very sincere so I hope you don't get pissed off. After all when guys like us post anything in any forum we expect 'punishment'. Same with the Meanies I just posted.

Nonetheless very good, based on the painting itself as I can see some meticulous layers went into the job. The shadow too is well done and a very nice touch for effect.

Cheers
Patrick

Patrick,
I am not too sure that the comment on the blood stain on the bandage was entirely justified as I have seen stark blood splotches of similar nature in real life. Some blood stains have a definite boundary which does not 'bleed' into the whites of the bandages, some do. I will give that a pass.

What blood type is our soldier friend anyway? ^_^
