Title: Decal - Tip To Keep Dry & Good
Description: Water Moisture Drier
MiG21 - September 30, 2009 09:38 AM (GMT)
I can across this very useful and convenience moisture drier pack from a local market in Penang during CNY.
I collect many decal sheets in cardboard boxes.
I normal sealed up my decal sheets but to be sure the box is 100% dry all the time I threw in one of this pack.
So far all my decals are in extreme good condition.
This pack is also an excellent odour remover for the fridge and shoe too.
It is made from very fine Japanese bamboo.
The wonderful part is this drier can last a long time.
Just dry it under a hot sun and it is as new again.
A pack of 2 is Rm10.00
I wanted to get more to give away but hardly see the promoter around at the market.
Wonder can you get it in KL/PJ?

But i see many people put big pack like this in their car... they said to eliminate moisture and odour as well... i dont think it is that hard to find... maybe car accessory or auto service shop have more...

Actually what is Daiso place? There's one outlet in The Curve right? which floor?
Alpha7 - October 2, 2009 02:18 AM (GMT)
My mom gave me one of these. I think she bought it from those cheap made-in-china shops.
YGTan, yes, Daiso is at the Curve, next to Borders at the top floor. Good place to get clone X-Acto #11 blades, too.

i just used those silica gel found on every shoes my wife bought.... normally they will put one small packet on each box....
MiG21 - October 7, 2009 01:57 PM (GMT)
Silantra> I believe those silica gel is the same in ubat bottle. Maybe the shoe one is a bigger packet. The only drawback with this silica gel is when it losses its absorption property the gel turns pinky.
Whereas the above bamboo charcoal can be reused by drying it under the hot sun to remove the water.
A charcoal particles is different from an active carbon.
You normally find active carbon in water filter.
Very expensive.

Bro, chemically, they are the same. Those "active carbon" you find in water filter are the same. The difference is the porosity of the material and some physical properties. "active carbon" are not expensive by the way (unless you specifically needs high porosity for good efficiency).... go to a fish aquarium shop you can get a packet for Rm5 or so. The main use for these stuffs is to remove odor.

I remember back in design school I was advised to buy silica beads and put them in my camera bag to keep the cameras dry. I was told that the beads could be sundried once they turned pink to 'rejuvenate' them. Not sure how true.

I just use ordinary charcoal. Use to spend a fortune for BlueHippos until my wife told me charcoal is better, cheaper, and last a lifetime :P
So now I put the charcoals inside the bluehippo containers and leave them insie my display shelves. So far, no problem

Here is how I protect my precious decals.
Step 1.
Decal is sealed air tight in a plastic beg and goes into a plastic sleeve in a folder.

Step 2.
My decal is files according to each particular aircraft.
E.g: This folder box has all the decals for the F-16.
Here is the folder for all operators of F-16 in 1/32.

Step 3.
I throw in the Bamboo Water Absorbent Bar for an extra protection to protect the decals from our very high moisture weather.

Step 4.
The carton lid is put back and box is stored away on the shelf.

Dear MIG,
No offense, but.... what actually convince you that bamboo charcoal absorbs moisture that'll be up to a level to keep your decals well dry?
Bamboo Charcoal, i believe does have little moisture absorption effect due to the high porosity. But then, I'd say it's a "secondary effect" as it was mainly used for odor removal (VOC removal... to be specific). The effectiveness will be less if compared to normal moisture-absorber (like silica gel) which is designed for very high porosity specially to capture water moisture.
The color changes are because the silica gel has added with salts in it which can "react with water" true the following reaction:
Metal*Non-Metal + Xwater = Metal*Nonmetal.Xwater
example, Copper sulphate (CuSO4) is white. But reacting with water added, it'll become CuSO4.5H2O, and it's blue.
I don't know what salt they put in to make it pink and blue.
So.... since decals doesn't stink and it doesn't afraid of odor..... why not just use normal silica gels? which you might often get it for free in a packet of dried foods.
Note: I "" the React With Water because it isn't having chemical reaction with water. It just bonds with water...into err..... can't remember the name... hydrous salt or something like that.
