koowilliams - September 22, 2009 03:50 PM (GMT)

TAMIYA ENAMEL THINNER...
can be found in MH...
KIRIN - September 22, 2009 04:16 PM (GMT)
You can either try the Tamiya Enamel Thinner or artist oil thinner, available in most art shop, which I currently using, with shorter drying time and is not really cheap.

Doesn't that also dissolve the model's plastic? Make your model look like sotong kering.

Nope, it does not. I have been doing that for many years. For airbrushing, it is fine but not for paint brushing or using the thinner directly on the plastic.
flylice80 - September 23, 2009 08:39 AM (GMT)
mmmmm <_< hahaha, I'm not taking risk on that. By the way, what "commercial" do you mean? Those Rm 2.50 per bottle? I call them industrial though...
waffen_ss - September 23, 2009 08:56 AM (GMT)
flylice80,
Bingo, that's the one. I actually mentioned ordinary thinner but you are correct to say that they are commercial and/or industrial thinner. If you are worried about damaging the plastics, you can try spray it on an unwanted model kit and see the results. Using it can be a saving for you instead of buying the thinner specified by the manufacturers that usually cost more. The same goes with sandpaper and other modelling stuff.
Regards and happy modelling. :D
flylice80 - September 23, 2009 09:47 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah. I usually scour everywhere (even the cosmetic department in Guardian pharmacy) to look for anything that can use for modeling. I have several of those ordinary thinners on my bench, mainly for cleaning paint trays, brushes and airbrush. If those can use, you definitely can save alot coz it's only 10% of model paint thinner's price. I never used it on models directly, probably will experiment and see.
1 experience I had was that I have this plastic model display stand (the one provided in Finemold's Cartoon WW2 figure kits) long time ago, I mixed those thinner with some wood putty to create a simple base for the figure. The plastic base was melted alittle, but only noticable if you flip the base upside down. I don't know if it's the problem of the plastic, wood putty or the thinner, all I know is that these stuffs don't go well together. Since that time onwards, I don't use those thinners frequently.... until I get an airbrush, I start cleaning with it.
nurazmy - September 23, 2009 11:37 AM (GMT)
wahhh!! can use the industrial one aaaa..?? i have to experiment this la, if jadi, i can save a lot la bro!
davidlim - September 23, 2009 12:46 PM (GMT)
yeah, industrial thinner works on enamel too...but don't spray too thick/wet on the plastic. it causes them to be brittle. especially on thin ones.
Holy P - September 23, 2009 02:36 PM (GMT)
Thinner nowsaday I use Mr Hobby "Leveling Thinner", I think one of the workshops by the sifus did mention that it is especially good for paint air brushing. I find that is true for both acrylic and enamel paint.
Regards.
nurazmy - September 23, 2009 04:10 PM (GMT)
Dear Holy p, is this levelling thinner can be use on both enamel (oil base) n acrylic (water base) paint? how about use it for clear coating on both surface?
waffen_ss - September 24, 2009 01:38 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah, I miss out something here. If you are worried about industrial thinner damaging your model and the smell that goes with it, you can also use mineral spirit. I got a can many years ago from ACE hardware at Gaint Johor Bahru which had since closed. One thing though, the can last you a long time. Nowadays I use the industrial thinner mainly for cleaning paints off my air brush, airbrush and other modelling utensils.
nurazmy - September 24, 2009 03:06 PM (GMT)
bro, mana mau dapat mineral spirit tu?? brand apa?? kalo ada gambar bleh tolong send kat thread nie?? ur co-operation is highly appreciate... :D

Oh... dear me.
I have that ACE mineral spirit in my cabinet. I purchased i to try to thin oil paints, but eventually I never used it even once. It's still sealed. A month ago I've been desperately looking for enamel thinner, didn't realise I have the mineral spirit that could actually work. I'll test it once i get home.

I find the Mr Hobby Leveling Thinner works well for both enamel and acrylic. But NOT for thinning clear coat as second coating to your painted model, I had a bad experience that it eat/wash up the painted base, and made the preshading coming up too clearly from the base and spoilt the whole paint job, this however I checked with few sifus here but none of them facing this disaster as I did. So now for coating, I only use Future.
Best of luck!

Don't think so it can be use. For Mr. Color, preferably to use their thinners as the paints don't seems to click with others. Maybe the other can shed some light on it.
Nurazmy,
You are most welcome. Harap you boleh dapat barang tu.

Dear all sifu, after painstakingly going through this thread, suddenly it got my attention will the ACE painter thinner (mineral spirit) will work well with model master metalizer buffing paints.....cause I got few bottles that are dried. Any comments on this will be helpful.

Dear Cag200,
I have a bottle of that mineral spirit and currently it works well for me for oil paints (not those acrylic type artist paint) and humbrol enamels. Since it works well with humbrol, I have confidence it can work for model master as well. I got a few model master paints from MH during that time in midvalley, but I haven't even open those paints yet. I'm not 100% sure it can work for model master.
This mineral spirit has no effect on acrylic paints. Also, I wonder why it has no effects on Tamiya and Gunze enamel paints as well. But that's a good sign coz I can use it to substitute humbrol thinner coz they are hard to get. I use the mineral spirit mainly for weathering use (all type of washes) that will consume alot of precious thinners.
Dried out paints, normally I dun cure them or restore them back. I just throw them away. Using thinner to cure them.... it works but not always perfectly. Only suitable if you thinking of using those cured paints for dry brushing... not suitable for body base painting... whether hand brushed or air brushed.... and most importantly, you'll risk damaging your brush if the paint is rock-hard dry.
cag200 - October 22, 2009 03:29 PM (GMT)
Hi Bro flylice80,
Thanks for information & I was going to ask also whether the ACE mineral spirit also works for humbrol enamel paints & you have already reply the question in advance & thanks again, also I'm such a cheapsake person that I don't throw away the dried out paints & I will try to dilute them 1 way or the other, throwing it away its not an option for me. If not I might have thrown them allaway long time ago. I still prefer the gunze paints as evan the paints are dried out, I can still use the industrial/commercial thinner from the hardware store to dilute it back and use it. Sorry fellas I'm a real cheapskate & stingy person. I can use the bottle of paint until the paints totally finish out & when you pour thinner into the bottle the thinner stays clear without turning murky. ^_^

A bottle of industrial thinner in Penang's hardware shop is Rm2.00.
The brand is "Butterfly".
Anyone has any idea to "thin" the thinner.
I mean to make it less stronger.

I use them only to wash brushes, paint spills, etc. I don't apply them to thinning paints or on the model.
Anyway, why wanna "thin" the thinner. It's not logic. If something can "thin" that thinner, might as well just use it to thin the paint.

Geramlah aku cheated by the hardware shopkeeper....
I used to buy this hardward thinner 250ml cost RM3.50 to wash the brush after painting, then one day the shopkeeper mentioned this "Gardex Thinner" works just like thinner minus the smell, sounds good so I bought one at RM10.00 for 1 liter.
This Gardex Thinner is said for Jotun Paint (produced by Jotun (M) Sdn Bhd also) so I guess it works the same for our modelling paint.
But when I try to wash my brush painted with Tamiya acrylic paint, this Gardex Thinner acts just like plain water !!!
The contents written there are: Nathpha (petroleum) hydrotreated heavy 50-100%, anyone here knows what are they? I can't drink it and I don't know what I am going to do with it.....
flylice80 - November 6, 2009 01:26 AM (GMT)
Petroleum based thinners cannot be used for dissolving acrylics. Most likely, you can use it for humbrol paints and non-arcylic oil artist paints.
The rm 3.50 u bought is alcohol based.... if i'm not mistaken.
