Title: Ripping And Storing Music From Cd To Computer
Description: Anybody into this?

OK, this is a rather strange topic to ask in a modelling forum....maybe better in LowYat.net....
But id like to ask the opinion of people I am familiar with first....so anyone who is into this stuff, your help is welcome...i am very primitive when it comes to this stuff
Currently 95% of my music collection is on about 500 CDs...was thinking to rip them all and load into a hard drive, and playback from the hard drive through a Squeezebox to my hifi.
I know the basic stuff, ie ripping to lossless format like FLAC etc and not MP3.
Just some hardware questions:
1. Do i need a laptop hard drive or can i just connect an external hard drive to the Squeezebox?
2. How much does a Squeezebox cost in Malaysia?
3. Anyone got experience with this set up - how do you find the internet radio quality and sound?
4. Can the FLAC format files be loaded onto an I-pod for mobile sound? Or need to convert to MP3?
Thanks!

For the benefit of everyone....
What is FLAC and Squuezebox?
FLAC: lossless music file format which give exact copy of CD. Not like Mp3 which is compressed. So, if you copy a CD to your computer hard drive, using FLAC format it will be exactly the same. As we all know, Mp3 sound is quite lousy.
Squeezebox: A device made by Logitech. It runs off your home wireless internet and controls data from your laptop to you hifi. Lihat
SINI . Cost about RM 1200
So, imagine this:
1. You copied all your music and video etc into your laptop
2. Using the wireless, Squeezebox can access them and feed them into your hifi/TV
3. Because its wireless, your laptop can be downstairs while you listen to music upstairs..or anywhere in the house.
4. Squeezebox can also stream video and audio from the internet and play directly on your hifi (eg. yahoo music or internet radio)
The main advantage is convenience la kot....but then I still love my CD's haha...its got a "real" feeling not like this computer stuff....

Takde ar Zaidi....sajer playing with the idea....the more i think about it, the less attractive it is hahaha
It would cost about RM 2k+ in investment including the Squuezebox, about 800 GB of hard drive plus all the time to upload the media.....
For 2K....can buy lots of kits and CD's man!!!

exactly syah...
sound very promising but i believe the 800GB would be filled very fast since i think the FLAC file is big right? not like the mp3 file which is quite small...
but again.. think somemore and hopefully by the end of this month.. you might lost interest all together  then can go any buy kits
interesting gadget i must say.

Kuman.....
One music CD in FLAC is about 500-700 Mb, so memory will definitely be used fast.....
Actually, lost interest last nite after listening to "Kamelia" and holding the Sweet Charity CD, gelak tengok Ramli Sarip punya muka dulu....i realise ill never have that feeling if everything was on some hard drive....it will be like fast food jer...
So you are rite, all this digital computer thingy is like fashion fad jer......after a while obselete....then some new technology come out...obselete lagi...forget it....just stick to CD..there will be millions of them for years to come
