Title: Make It So
Description: Andrea's Jean-luc Picard
beachbum - August 31, 2009 07:22 AM (GMT)
Hi All,
After a long and still existing slump, I finally finished and gave old baldy below to my brother. Its from Andrea and is a fairly straightforward figure to paint. Fit was moderate. Cleanup minimal. The base was crudely made and well...Jean-luc only resembles Jean-luc to some extent....or it could just be my painting :D
Figgie done with Vallejo acrylics and the Enterprise was done with a mix of Vallejo and Citadel.

As always all comments welcomed and appreciated.

Awesome painting, as always.
Thanks for sharing. ^_^
koowilliams - August 31, 2009 07:42 AM (GMT)
wow... look at that a$$... of course that is not your doing... the expression is looking really good... since the guy in the TV version was the same guy who played Dr. X-xaveir in all X-men movies, did you cloned the head to make Dr. Xavier...?? any possibility...??

Many thanks Becky. Actually after such a looong slump my painting skills have deteriorated. :)
:D :P Yeah Koowilliams I may have just over highlighted poor Prof X behind just a wee bit too much.

Beach,
A beautiful figure...

Excellent painting as usual and nice pose..
But the face....Yul Brynner? :D
PoohBear - August 31, 2009 02:27 PM (GMT)
Ah. Finally finished and a good job too.
Well done indeed on the blending. Resemblance to Patrick Stewart is...well, perhaps this one's based off a cousin thrice removed.
cheers

Beach,
Resemblance is another matter. It's the sculptor's problem. A painter can only do so much with the given features. What you have done with everything counts and this is a good figure job. The base.......I know you can do better as I've seen your previous work. The pedastal for the Enterprise is very nicely done though. What did you do to make it look like marble?
Beam me up
Patrick

Mucho thanks Mr. Engineer, Alex, Landyshah, Herr Pooh and Patrick.
Herr Pooh how did you guess it was the 3rd cousin, thrice removed? The bald head gave it away, right? Actually the 3rd. cousin, thrice removed has a wee bit of hair while the 3rd. cousin, twice removed is the one without the hair. :)
Master Patrick as for how I did the marble, "Observation my dear Watson, observation". Nah...just kidding, partially anyway. The thing about marble for me are 3 key points:
1. Marble has a translucent effect mainly coz the dark "stripes" are actually several, overlapping tones of a dark color (i.e. light grey or bluish grey). So a dark stripe actually sits partially over a longer grey stripe or vice versa.
2. The white "stripes" are just the same in that pure white sits over off-white and vice versa.
3. The translucent effect is enhanced by painting it very several thin coats of gloss.
I started painting a light grey basecoat. Followed it with several, thin stripes of slightly off-white. Built up the color of some of the stripes by painting it several times till it was almost solid off-white stripe. Streaked some of them with pure white that was only diluted slightly. Did the same for the grey stripes starting with very diluted medium gray and streaking it with dark grey. Finally several, thin coats of gloss.

Herr Bum, honestly, I don't have a clue, thanks for the update. Anyway, twice, thrice, naughty or nice, facebook can sort 'em all out...eventually.
The marble was painted? Figured it for a chip off the Taj Mahal ^_^
BTW, Picard looks deep in though. Maybe he's thinking he should have hooked a left at the last outpost instead of right ^_^
cheers

Painted?!!!! You sure had me going there for a while. Very realistic and I tot the same as Pooh - Taj Mahal.

Bummer,
the pose of the kapitan looks like he's about to tango. Skin tone blending looks good from here.
Base looks a bit bare though or not high tech enough. I would have used some really hard edges.
Mr. Engineer - September 1, 2009 03:15 PM (GMT)
Well, with the two keywords repeating, now you all got me thinking about it too.
Yes. The bum.
YongA01 - September 2, 2009 07:08 AM (GMT)
Nice figure....
Love the Marble... very realistic
beachbum - September 3, 2009 12:12 AM (GMT)
 :D Actually Loo you are right, old Kapitan does look like he's about to go into a tango. Looks like the bum has a knack for painting bums. :P
As for the crude base, it came with the kit. Pity I didn't have a time to scratch a new base but I don't think my brother will mind much. For me, its an eye sore looking at it. Can't understand why Andrea would make a decent figgie, a nice pedestal and a passable Enterprise only to put it all on a lousy base. The bases from Seil are very good and the one I'm working on, suprisingly from Andrea, from the Ashigaru kit is quite ok too. Ah well.....
Many thanks Loo & Allan for the comments.

Nice one! it does look like he is on the set for " Dancing with the stars".
Loevly work as usual MrBeach.
Bomber Vince - September 4, 2009 04:38 AM (GMT)
overall a master class work CK, very realistic shading on the faces, like that very much. I noticed some figure painter painted the face with heavy shadow and highlight.
this one is just nice

LOL!! Must be the way his backside sticks out...like ballroom dancer

Many thanks Enghui and Vince.
Vince I think the contrasts on faces depends a lot on the scale as well. On the smaller scales say the fantasy figures or minis you really have to push the contrasts to see the details while on the larger scales say the 1/16th figures the contrasts maybe more soft. For old Picard aka "Tango Dancer" I didn't really push the contrasts but I did use a lot of light shades mainly because too dark shades on a bald guy may look odd and also because Patrick Stewart himself is kind of pale.
To be truly accurate Enghui and Landy, there are 3 stars involved here. The first is Patrick Stewart who is a "Star "in his on right, then secondly there is the role he plays, Captain Picard who is a "Star"ship captain. Finally the 2 stars would be truly be dancing with the "Stars" in space. ;) :D

Fine work as always Beachbum.
I really have to give it you credit for the splendid paint job on the figure, the subtle shading and colour blending really makes the figure stand out.
Although, I noticed that you seem to have spent a considerable amount of time highlighting the rear posterior. Very sexy! Its as if Jean Luc was saying "Strike a pose sister!"
Just kidding!
