Title: Robot Modeling Workshop - For Kids
koowilliams - August 27, 2009 10:07 AM (GMT)
This morning... 27th aug... as usual, I'm off doing one thing do best... leading the kids... This time round is about BUILDING a MODEL KIT... GUNDAM... It was not me who started it... i just spent time there building my own models and the kids saw it and approached their parents to approach me to teach them... that's when it all started... great huh... there's still many parent like you guys, encourage kids to this healthy hobby...
This workshop took place at my humble art center... It was quite a challenge for both me and the kids... it was their first Gundam HG kits for some... I got the helpful ZERO1st to help me out with the kids... and my wife as the photographer for this workshop... please bear with her... she has never taken photography lesson or much experience...
and i proudly put on SFTPMS t-shirt along the workshop... LOL...
This was the poster...

I break them down into 3 category... by the difficulty of the kits. I got boys aged 7 till 10 in this class...
Here's what happened...

the unopened box...
This is their first time... so some basic understanding on the complicated(for kids) instruction manual is needed... so i brought them through

and no... that is no CKLoo... that was me, koowilliams... i've stolen his hair...

the concentration...

that adult face is Zero1st....

My wife was too busy taking shot of the kids... that she almost forgot to take the opening screen of the session...
Demo session

while Zero1st's Hi-Nu Gundam is on the lookout...

Almost at the end of the session... that's me... and zero1st on the right...
half of the kids didnt make it to completion... i'll guide them how to use AIRBRUSH tomorrow... they'll love it... ... .. because they never use or even saw a machine like that before...!!!!
that's for now... after they have completed tomoro... i'll show you guys their/my results....

cikgu koo, the things you do in the name of malaysia, really proud of you man. Really professional even used the projector. SUSPEKKKKK habissss. If I had kids, i would send them to your class for sure, to be supportive
Here is another thought, for every student's gundam, why dont you post them in this site for each person in separate threads, let the children give their own name for the thread title and let the teachers here give supportive comments, then give this website to the parents to educate them about the presence of our association and so that they will feel proud of their childrens
Once again tabik for you cikgu

Hey, Sky... thats a wonderful idea... why didn't i thought of that....!!!!!!!
tomorrow I'll snap some WIP picture of the kid's model and their face... first thing in the morning...
Guess now i'll have to quickly design a small invitational cards to visit this site... dont want the parents to only take a piece of "post-it" note...
THANKS SKY..!!!!

Well done !
I didn't know you have the workshop earlier if not I will send my son over there.
By the way, you sponsored the kits or their parents bought their own? Let me know if you allow me to sponsor to kids if such need arises.
Regards,
Loh

Great job Koo & Zero1st. Good sign to see so many parents let send their kids to the workshop.
koowilliams - August 27, 2009 04:40 PM (GMT)
Thanks, HOLY-p...
but my place is located somewhat far for many... near this FGS Dong Zhen temple...
I consider this a holiday workshop and parents pay a fee that includes both this 4 hour class and the kits... I brought in cutters and sand papers for everyone... I'll let you know when I need your helps... thanks a lot for offering... !!!!!

i bet the Zeroist's Hi-Nu gundam a big hit and also a big poison for the kids...
maybe after the abrush session they might ask the parents to get the advance kit for them to work on... really nice..
your idea of an invitation card is also good...
good job in promoting the hobby.. :D

Good job bro!
No doubt Bandai's kits is the easiest way to introduce our hobby to the new generation. Let's hope at least some of them would find it fun and keep doing it as hobby!
I m keen in lending a hand too if u need any ^_^
koowilliams - August 28, 2009 04:45 PM (GMT)
Day two of the workshop... started at 1.30pm today (28th Aug 2009) and
AIR BRUSH IS ON...!!!!

itchy hands

no problem with the 10yrs old...

but the 7yrs old group can't really control my double-action brush... but they just tembak anyway... I'm using tamiya acrylic gunmetal... and spray only on the rifle... so i'd guess it is still rather safe... tho a simple face mask would be better, i forgoten...!!!
Here's what they got...

the MK-II guy... he's got no problem at all... work on his kit without much question... coz he have like more than 10 B-Daman and SD kits already...

The young man with one HG built experience... did his handpaint, airbrush and minor panel lining...
and the beginners with their GM...

but sorry guys... don't have no close up picture of the builds... my old camera isn't helping(look at all the dull colours!!!) and i dont have time to set up a photoshooting space while watching over the kids...
I tried to take some close up... but it was not good... look...

so... i didnt invite parents over... sorry guys...
koowilliams - August 28, 2009 04:53 PM (GMT)
thanks guys... and
You're right, KUMAN... the parent did ask me when there will be the second session like this??? and another ask "why dont you have a long term class like this... teach them every months on the skills?"
Bandai kit is sure helpful... but it is still better to let the 7 years old work on the new SD... bigger and lesser piece... the easiest hg i can find proves to be a challenge for them...
Ray... I'll definitely inform you if I have another workshop like this... I always find it easier to encourage kids by say "students... these friend of mine is pro in this thing... they won many awards"
sky_tokyodrifter - August 31, 2009 10:47 AM (GMT)
wow those kids finished the kits nicely. Make me look like a toddler on my gundam. Very nice using AB also. I guess i will be needing a teacher too :ph43r:
Becky - August 31, 2009 10:55 AM (GMT)

Well done Koowilliams, Well Done!
Its great to see the little guys being "poisoned"....oops I meant being introduced to the wonderful world of modelling. :P :D Doesn't matter if some of them don't get to finish the kits but I'm very sure they walked away with an appreciation of modelling and I'm very sure they appreciated yours and Zero1st efforts if not patience.Lots of happy campers here.
Btw I'm 50/50 on the 1:1 scale of model of Loo's ex-hairdo. :P Just kidding. Excellent work Williams.
