Title: Scantily Dressed Figure
Description: ???????

modelsinfinescale - August 8, 2009 07:03 PM (GMT)
Guys,

This time it's actually a female.....and with more skin than the Aussie ;) so I kid you not with the title.

It's a resin recast from a metal kit so as usual it requires some elbow grease for a cheapo like me who can't afford the original. What do you think? Criticism most welcomed.

Hi Patrick

This is a nice diversion of your normal work. I like the effort you put on the leaves indicating the wind direction... nice small details

I prefer your painting style in WW2 figures. Fantasy has a tendency of more vibrant and pure hue, so this may appear a little tone down for typical Fantasy figure, not critism but just a matter of taste...

Patrick my man,
I agree with Alan. I prefer fantasy figures with more vibrant contrast and elves are always depicted as such an immaculate race, that I would have their armor polished and shiny. Maybe the skin tone is a touch too yellow for me too .
Did you get the ferns from the beachbum????? :P

Aahhhh.....good one. Well, I wouldn't know coz I've never seen one....

Aaaawww....c'mon guys. This is already too vibrant for my liking. Any more colorful and it could be placed on an alter with candles and joss sticks.....

Have you seen the stock pic? It's even more subdued in terms or color.

Thanks Loo.
Immaculate? Elves or leprachauns? Too yellow? As you can see I already received a suggestion for green :o Seriously though, you're observant. I did try a different base color and too much yellow lighting did the rest. Then again it's fairy land and who knows what skin tones these make believe fairy folk have.

Beach who? Haven't heard from anyone going by that name in ages.....( hint, hint... ). I bought the 'ferns' from an art store at RM6 a pack which btw can last me a lifetime.

Allan
Thanks for the comments about the leaves. I like the effect also....ahem ;) I was actually burned out when I did this one. It was supposed to be a diversion ( as you put it ) from the usual but it became a drag halfway through. Should've just watched TV while I get my groove back....

Becks
That's all the pics. Nothing to see at the rear but just the cape.

Rest of the guys, thanks for input and the wisecracks. Brightens up my day. First prize goes to the flyguy for the green suggestion........

There are many kinds of elves eg Wood elves, Dark elves, Eldars, etc.

They are mostly fair of skin and complexion except for Dark elves which are (yup!) dark skinned.

Green skin typically belongs to Orcs but since its fantasy I suppose the limit of elf skin tones is up to one's imagination. Who knows, maybe you could paint a green skin elf in the midst of nausea or morning sickness. ^_^

Patrick, is that a gem on her lapel, belt & wrist guard? If it is, perhaps a little more polished sparkly brightness would enhance their look.

cheers and look forward to more from you.

Hey Pooh. I notice you're always early. First thing you do at the office is to check out the forum? I'm early today coz I haven't slept yet

You sure know your elves and orcs. The only green skins I know is orge, Shrek and Dr. Banner's 'you wouldn't like me when I'm angry' alter ego

Yes, 'gems'. And believe me I've already glossed them but they don't seem to sparkle. Oh well.........

Hulk smash.....and sleep now....

My elf & orc knowledge is limited to Tolkein's LOTR & warhammer plus a couple of D&D thrown in. ^_^

cheers & good...er..night, mr. hulk

Hmm...I hear in the distance my name being mentioned.

I'm afraid I'm with CKLoo and Allan. Having only a minimal go at the different genres even within the "small" world of figures I've noticed there is a Huge contrast in approaches and styles.

As Allan mentioned military figgies tend to have toned-down muted colors being Matt in most cases. As one moves to the other end of the spectrum say like minis or fantasy figgies the colors and even the highs, lows and contrasts change. Again its a matter of taste and there is no right or wrong. I suppose its just that for example viewers and painters of fantasy figs are so used to seeing vibrant colors, and strongly emphasized shadows and highlights that they would find the use of a military, WWII painting approach relatively bland. I've seen the original boxart from Andrea and in that the colors are quite vibrant in part due to the use of soft pinks for the skin or at least that's how it looks to me old eyes.

Personally, I find the work of painters of minis truly amazing. The use of colors, contrasts and not to mention working on such minute surface areas really makes me wish I had the skill to adapt some of their techniques to modern military painting.

On a sidenote, I found this approach quite effective for painting gems. Use either Tamiya's Clear Green or Clear Red. Paint the base with silver. Paint over several thin coats of Clear Green or Red depending on which gem color you want and you should get a translucent effect.

Just my more than 2 cts as usual.
