Title: Landyshah Try Buat Kereta

landyshah - August 1, 2009 01:52 AM (GMT)
OK, first time ever masuk car punya section....im a real newbie here :D

After I finish my Duck, and before i continue with my ships, I would like to have a quickie with these two, which i bought for someone rather special from the 595 Sale...definitely not my usual stuff...but would like to build it as a gift:
user posted image

Plan it as a dual build, side by side....the Jag is quite simple, but the Porsche manyak complicated :ph43r:

Bros Druid, Sky, Entau, PC and other car gurus, hope you can give me pointers now and then...especially on the chrome work and high gloss...

Nanti arrr...I habis the Duck first arr....

twong - August 1, 2009 02:09 AM (GMT)
Those are two nice classics. Waiting to see you build them.

sky_tokyodrifter - August 1, 2009 03:15 AM (GMT)
Abg shah ni teror betul semua hantammmmm

Bang that red porsche sure will give you headache  . The german flagship on the box indicates that its an enthusiast model. I have 1 too. Menggigil lutut after opening the box :( too many datail parts, then again i think no worries for you hehe  you teror ma............

Silantra - August 1, 2009 04:39 AM (GMT)
hari ini dalam sejarah

caya la shah.... ko memang all rounder..sometimes i do enjoy quickie

landyshah - August 1, 2009 05:35 AM (GMT)
LOL kan dah motto Semua Taroh...no fear!!!

But seriously, cars is like a virgin territory to me, only made one or two before...this is the only one still surviving: Jaguar XJR-LM, made in 1998 I think....but i kept in box too long, so the Silk Cut decal hancus, so repaint in ISA colour scheme....nothing great and some clear errors, but here it is:

Twong: Yes, nice classics..but I prefer Jags to Porsche. This 356 is a Beetle souped up haha

Sil: Quickie is good. Do more quickie. Harus dan disyorkan.

Sky: Yes, kit Porsche tu memang complicated...engine ada piston kat dalam laaa !!! Canggih!!

Well, once I get to work on this will need to tap you guys expertise !

Anyways, maybe first and last time u see me in car forum...better rotan kaw kaw

PcEvo - August 1, 2009 12:33 PM (GMT)

B) ...cool another car modeler...

OK landyshah... The FUJ Porsche that u going to build won't be as easy as the TAM Jaguar... due to it was an early release there are some fitting problems...so do try fit it first B4 apply glue.... might need a lot of 'putty' and sanding.

Nevertheless..this is really a detail kit that comes with full engine details and if not mistaken, the engine can be display separately which it comes with an engine stand and full technical detail on a decal form...

Hope to see more on ur progress soon.... Happy Building ya~! :)

Entau - August 2, 2009 10:15 AM (GMT)
enthusiast kit!! yeah i got 1 too during the sale, not porsche but ferrari :P

from what i see on the green jaguar, its just not enough glossy, another 2-3 layer of gloss clear coat + compound and the car will be bling bling

nurazmy - August 2, 2009 11:44 AM (GMT)
salam tuan2.. saya ni orang baru..tumpang tanyer bleh?? saya tngh survey airbrush kit n compressor.. bleh hulur ckit2 info yg ada, lokasi or kedai2 yg bleh saya dpt dgn harge yg reasonable.. bantuan anda sume amat la dihargai... :D

it's time 4 u to build a bling-bling Landy :D

druid_99 - August 3, 2009 12:28 AM (GMT)
Waaa... you are trying to build cars pulak... Good for you (eventough you said that thins might be one of the few times you venture into the cars section). :D

Goof choice with the Porsche. It is a detail kit and from your other previous build, I'm sure that you will awe us with the Porsche pulak... (by the way, the Silk Cut decal is available as aftermarket... FYI lah... ).

Suggestions/advise on building the Porsche? Well, I have not build any but all I can say is that the car is small. Much smaller than other cars in 1/24 scale and the parts provided on the sprue is good enough to build a very nice and detailed model.

Since it is an early model Porsche, you will need to invest in bare-metal foil (or maybe Alclad if you are comfortable with it) because of the numbers of chrome parts you will be using. Furhtermore, this is an earlier Fujimi model kits where the sprue gate on the chrome parts is usually located at the most visible areas on the parts.

Another thing is, you don't have to drybrush or preshade or do anything on the engine unless you want to build it to look like it is daily driven, just paint it according to the instruction and that's it. I would prefer a showroom condition where the engine is very clean so that all the details can be easily seen.

As usual, the cars will need to look shiny and glossy so, the finishing on the Porsche will not be like the armour or planes. A lot of modelers will happily assist you on the finishing (I am more than happy to give advise with my limited knowledge and experience).

Other than that, it is almost the same as your normal model build-up.

P/S: As an alternative, to save you all this trouble and headache, just sub-con this build to me lah...   (just kidding... )

landyshah - August 3, 2009 02:06 AM (GMT)
Thanks to all of you for the tips.

Imran, agree that there is no weathering or dirt etc....must be showroom clean. Hehe, yeah its a tiny little car!!

Some question:

1. With regard to the chrome, is it possible to just use the chrome parts given in the kit? I know its not 100% great, but these two models will just be for office display in a little glass case...I am thinking alclad and all that kinda OTT untuk display camtu...Can I get away with it?

2. The Porsche windscreen is transparent but the frame is supposed to be chrome..how to paint the chrome effect on?

3. What are the steps for main bodyshell painting: prime, base coat, sand, "wet" coat, gloss?

Muchas Gracias

druid_99 - August 3, 2009 02:40 AM (GMT)
I'll try to provide as best suggestion as I can.

1. For the chrome parts, the Fujimi ones are good enough without having it stripped and repaint. You only have to get a silver/chrome pen and touch up on some parts where the sprue is located, it should look presentable.

2. The normal process.... Mask and paint... If you are not using alclad or bare-metal foil (BMF) you can always mask the windscreen and paint the frame black before painting it with Gunze's Super Silver. That should look good enough...

3. There are a number of ways to paint a car but the usual way that I use is:

a) Prime
b ) Base coat (for red I advise using Mr. White Base before the red).
c) Prime colour (mist coats) about 3 to 4 mist coats with 1/2 hour window of drying time.
c) Wet coat about 2 coats with 1 to 2 hours of drying time in between coats.
d) Sand off orange peel effect (if there is any) and another mist coats just to level out the paint.
e) First layer of clear coat (mist coats) about 3 to 4 layers with 1/2 hour window of drying time.
f) Wet clear coat (first layer) and drying time for 2 hours and sand off orange peel to level out the paint.
g) Wet clear coat about 2 to 3 layers with drying time of 1 to 2 hours in between (more if you have the time).
h) Sand off orange peel effect (if any) and also to level off the clear coat using 1200 grit wetsand.
i) Rubbing compound to remove the scratches from the sandpaper. Autosol is advised for this stage. Caution: Do not over-rub especially on angled areas.
j) Use the Tamiya Compound (Coarse, Fine and Finish) starting from the coarse (rub in circular motion) buff off, then fine (again the same method) and the finish.
k) Polish off using any polishing compound.
l) Done...

Hope it is not too lenghty for you... Some might have lesser steps and lesser drying time but this is my usual practice.

Entau - August 3, 2009 03:04 AM (GMT)
landyshah,

if the chrome part are nicely mold, then no need susah susah repaint lah :P

but if lots of flash or mold line, then need to sand it off, i only know 2 way of doing chrome

1) using Bare Metal Foil, but i never use before :P
how to use: http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/BareMetalFoil/bmf.htm

2) using alclad II chrome,
how to use: http://z3.invisionfree.com/Zero_G/index.ph...topic=6302&st=0
(the tutorial done by Rayloke)

3) painting step, u can try it 1st before doing it on the kit

Tu diaa....Holy cowww.....lots more simple to paint ships haha......the clear coat pakai apa? Ive got several....humbrol enamel gloss coat, acrylic gloss coat, future, H20.....whats suitable? Lets say the base colour is using acrylic....

Entau, thank you for tip on chrome...the kit part look ok from outside la, wait when i open then will know for sure...

 ayoooo LS..ku kekaguman..allrounder..semua boleh buat..tabik pakai kaki nie

Entau - August 3, 2009 04:02 AM (GMT)
acrylic ar..never try on cars' body, heard that after acrylic dries, not as hard as lacquer paint, but if you must use acrylic as base paint, then only acrylic and enamel paint can be use as top coat ^_^

That's why most modellers that starts from building cars will eventually move to other subjects and leaving only a handful of car modellers that is still active building cars in the group...

For all of my builds, I simply use industrial clear de-canned in a glass bottle filled with industrial thinner and applied using airbrush.

I use only Anchor brand clear coats for all the clear coating of my cars. So far this is the best clear coat that I have used (not taking Gunze, Tamiya or other branded modelling clear coats into the picture). :D

landyshah - August 4, 2009 07:41 AM (GMT)
OK Itik dah settle......can open up these 2 kits and wash sprue dulu..Ill come back with report once i lay them out

Imran, bukan nak kata apa, tapi avatar ko tu memang cun la...everytime ko post, I look at it first before reading your post   ...but thanks for info on clear coat...

Yes, definitely if base colour using acrylic, have to use acrylic clear coat....anchor sound good.

OK OK Imran....gue tarak kacau...see no touch :P

So, lets kick off: put all the sprues to wash then laid out to dry.....

that jaguar is so tiny

druid_99 - August 5, 2009 12:17 AM (GMT)
Waa... looks like the project is already starting... :D Good luck bro...

Remember to study carefully the instructions for the Porsche. Some parts could be a bit tricky to assemble and some might be straight forward. For the Porsche, I don't think there will be much problem except from filling and puttying. Looks like a straight forward build.... Any picture of the piston???

The Jaguar is one of the most beautiful car designed. This Gunze model that you got is the simplified version. Not much problem but please test fit because some minor clean up will be required.

A bit of unnecessary info here... There is actually two version by Gunze, the simplified ones (the ones that you got here) and the more complicated ones which includes white metal frames, white metal engine, a whole load of PE parts for the wire wheels and details which will build into a very heavy model kit.... It was reissued by Airfix and I have it in my stash...

One tip (which I think you already know)... Blackwash the wire wheels of the Jaguar to highlight the molded wire wheels. :)

Silantra - August 5, 2009 12:45 AM (GMT)
waaaaaaaa dah mula dah ...

cutting mat nko memang giant size .... boleh jadi sleeping bag bro.... new one ke?? look brand new...

i'll watching this thread baik2 punyer....
and i noticed the 'artwork' on the maroon box is censored...

so imran, what do u mean by "..wire wheels of the Jaguar to highlight the molded wire wheels.." what wire wheels??

ps: Lana Lang is going to marry Lex Luthor.... huhuhuh

landyshah - August 5, 2009 03:03 AM (GMT)
Imran: Thanks for info....Ill take a picture of the piston just for u haha, got crankshaft and clutch plate oso...gilerr

Sil: cutting mat tu dah some time already daaa....its my assembly area so pretty clean la...yang painting area punya cutting mat look a lot worse.

As for the wire wheel, Imran talking about the rims.....Jag rim pakai dawai mcm basikal....in the kit the rim is moulded solid, to give impression of spoke kena bagi the background hitam, so the chrome will stand out.....

sky_tokyodrifter - August 5, 2009 03:16 AM (GMT)
For the rims, maybe you can scratch build broder shah, use dawai ^_^

sky_tokyodrifter - August 5, 2009 03:34 AM (GMT)

Boleh ma, you're landyshah anything is possible bebeh. Maybe take 1 day to finish 1 rim only, hehe pengsan

landyshah - August 5, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
Haha, takpe, tenkiu vely much, rhumba nandri....

I can finish this two car OOB pun happy......cukup

druid_99 - August 5, 2009 03:43 AM (GMT)
Zaidi: I mean exactly like what Shah says. The wire wheel is molded solid with some impression of the wire wheel embossed on it. To highlight the rim lidi, a blackwash is needed.

Sky:
The Jag rim is small... don't think scratchbuilding will be the best choice. 1/24 somemore... jenuh nak squint the eye... Another alternative is to use the PE aftermarket wire rims but for RM150 per set I don't think it is justified.... furthermore nak bagi orang lak tu... hehehe...

landyshah - August 5, 2009 02:31 PM (GMT)
My first submission of WIP untuk perhatian all the mahaguru...

I chose to start with the "simpler" Jag  ....so I put together the chassis parts and body....some sanding to get all the panels to line up....I also fitted a few of the interior panels but left out the seats, instrument, steering etc:

user posted image
user posted image

My logic is to apply the underside and interior colours...the mask off and spray body....then later add the details....I thought it can work this way cos its a convertible..open top so still can do interior later......is this a workable logic guys?

BTW Imran, this is the piston/crankshaft and clutch plate from the Porsche kit:

druid_99 - August 6, 2009 12:35 AM (GMT)
Shah, the piston needs to be puttied... hahahaha... This is where the term over-engineering by Fujimi comes in mind... Unless you want to make a cutaway version of the car, it is an unnecessary detail added by Fujimi.

As for the Jag, your logic is workable and that is the way I would have done it because of the way the body is molded. I would also painted the interior tub and glue the body together before masking it, painting and adding details. Are you going to paint the undersurface just one colour without detail painting or are you going to detail painting it? I ask this because I notice that you have glued the front disc brake onto the cucpension system. The disc brake will need to be painted silver and the caliper is black. I'm just asking because it is not an issue actually because the disc brake will be totally blocked by the one-piece rim.

One thing though, there is a sinkhole on the first muffler that must be filled unless you are not detailing the undersurface lah.

Other than that, it looks like a good progress there Shah.

landyshah - August 6, 2009 03:23 AM (GMT)
Vosrschprung Dursch Technik  I think Fujimi just want to show power they can do it in 1/24....whether logic or not is irrelevant...

Druid, the instructions are vague about underside colour...so i will just spray the whole underside the body colour (British Racing Green) then pick out suspension details/brake/exhaust with brush. OK ka?

Wont spend too much time to detail underside, just thot to get the general colours right....The cars will be sealed in glass case anyway. Interior/seats/carpet/panelling will be cream.

Actually, I'm suprised the assembly is so fast haha....but I really feel takut to have any accident and damage to the body (mcm keta real pulak siut haha)
