Title: Dragon 1/35 Uh-1d Heer
Description: Dun be surprised, i love Heli too
ahhow - July 31, 2009 05:53 AM (GMT)
Well, before i see Dremel's 1/72 Panzerzug Bp-44, i think this is the worst kit i ever buy, but now i think this is a super nice kits, hahaha. U knows what i mean.
But still i did some modify to it. The rescue hoist is the 1st thing i modify.
original kits parts - damn nice

Here's the draft i made in Illustrator.

modified - simplified yet still ok for me

I print out the draft, stick it on aluminum, cut and fold the main structure accordingly, and glue to the kits parts. Other details were added from variety unwanted parts, sprues, wire, sculpey, etc.
Actually I did this over a year ago. At that time i still not invest in pla-plate. I believe it will look nicer if i redo the main structure with pla-plate, but please, i dun wanna make it again, so tired.
Some more to go before painting.
ahhow - August 1, 2009 01:13 AM (GMT)
Cabin's roof top

Dragon doesn't provided That 2 black things (dunno wat's that), i got them from my old Huey. The 2 “phones” thing are made from sprue and copper wires.
The best part of this kit is the colored PE dashboard.

And here's the simple details i added. Better than do nothing, i guess. :D
PoohBear - August 1, 2009 01:27 AM (GMT)
Good eye for detail.
Makes me itchy to do one too :D
landyshah - August 1, 2009 01:33 AM (GMT)
Very nice la Ah How....you always so humble..but you are one of the modeller I really respect.
See you do, I also gatal to make Huey again haha.......
twong - August 1, 2009 02:05 AM (GMT)
WOW! Incredible work. So realistic. I wish my skills as good as you.

ahhow - August 4, 2009 06:21 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys, Jom bina Huey...
Landyshah: Thanks, i love your builds too.
Twong: Thanks, no professional skills were used on this build, all are simple modify, everyone can make it. The word "realistic" can't be use to describe this build, coz if u refer to the real thing, u'll find that not even 1 part from this kit is accuracy, hahaha... :D
Sounds funny but actually not.
landyshah - August 4, 2009 06:32 AM (GMT)
Ahhow..one thought...those black thing u stuck to the roof...they are the gunsights....which was used on Huey "Hog" armed with rockets.
I think if you are building this UH-1D for German army, it was not equipped with the rockets...so should not have the gunsight? Just wondering....

Thanks for pointing out my mistake, u r right, that gunsight things was replace by another thing... :D

Continue with the progress.
So "cincai" finished the interior.

But still have to make amendment for the roof as Landyshah mentioned above.
Add some very basic details to both pilot's door, although very lousy, but i think it's better than nothing at all.

German Heer version doesn't have the big handle beside pilot doors, i filled the holes and added small handle instead. Pilot door handles are steal from old Huey.

More simple details

Those holes is for tail antenna parts, most of my references doesn't have that antenna, so i just filled them. The gap of the square part nearly (or over?) 1mm wide, i have to filled it with pla-plate and wall putty, looks ugly. :( I also added some simple details.

Ohhhhhhh, look at those huge rivets
moJimbo - August 4, 2009 01:59 PM (GMT)
looks very good ahhow, i especially like the cockpit/cabin bits B)

 ayooooo if this the result of ur "cincai' works..just imagine how it will be end if you put your 'pro' touch..and as usual Dragon's or Panda's kit..thick plastic..but fun to build ..keep up a good work AH
ahhow - August 5, 2009 01:43 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys.
Blackheart: This kit is fun to build if built OOB and do not use the PE, if not it's nightmare. And no need to imagine lar, i never been pro, hahaha.
msyamal - August 5, 2009 02:30 AM (GMT)
WOW, WOW, WOW , especially the cockpit.. WOW..
Is the seat belt come with the kit or els?
:o
enghui - August 5, 2009 03:13 AM (GMT)
I love it , the finish is very realistic and all the detail is a delight to see.
Also nice touches like rope under the seat and the satchel above.
Simple details are what make this model not simple. :)

Thanks,
Ya, the colored PE come with the kits.
If u wanna buy any Dragon Huey series, i got 1 suggestion--> Use the PE on any Academy Huey, and built Dragon's one without PE, more worth.

Thanks Ahhui,
Those thing was add purposely to cover the super simple details, the satchel is actually US army ww2 bag....hahaha
I wish to add more but i have no idea what else to add, so u r pilot, any suggestion?
enghui - August 5, 2009 08:30 AM (GMT)
You dont need my suggestions laaa. But if it was a vietnam bird I would say a Bikini poster on one of the walls.Since its a German Bird who knows?Since they are sooo professional.
at your service,
ahhui

Can u explain more on this?
How, ur Huey really nice, the details makes it so real
PoohBear - August 5, 2009 09:19 AM (GMT)
BV, could be wrong but I think what ahhow is suggesting is that the PE from the DML kit would be far better off being utilised on Academy's Huey kit. So if you happen to have both kits, save the PE for the Academy and build the DML plain jane without PE.
ahhow - August 5, 2009 09:38 AM (GMT)
Ahhui: Ok... i'll not add bikini poster... thanks for your advise :D
Bomber Vince: PoohBear was absolutely right, Academy Huey much much better in details and accuracy. Save the PE for Academy and u will get a super detail Huey.
Oops, i complain about kits again
Bomber Vince - August 5, 2009 10:00 AM (GMT)
I have both kits, 2 dragons and 3 acad. THanks for the advice

oops, mistaken liao, one huey frog sold last week to mr Hammer.
ahhow - August 12, 2009 02:39 AM (GMT)
Thanks again for viewing, some small update.
As Landyshah mentioned, i replaced the gunsight with something else.

Finished the rescue hoist, you can see my work was so rough...:P

Painted, decaled and weathered the rear side doors. The font of "SAR" quite different with the real one...

And the inner side, the original parts was totally empty, i added some simple details. Couldn't add more, scare if the door cannot fit in.

Joined the body.

Headache again, gap over 1mm. Still not sure my wall putty can handle or not.<_<
Bud Bilko - August 12, 2009 05:31 AM (GMT)
Bro,
Hmmm.. that gap is as big as Siberia :o (he he he ...just kidding).
Try using plastic strips (some call it styrene) and slot it in. Cover it with your choice of putty... walla.....
Sarjana Six Zero, out!!
ahhow - August 17, 2009 08:43 AM (GMT)
Thanks brother Bub Bilko for the tips. I should have seen your reply b4 proceed. Anyway, after hours of sanding + trimming, the result like this. The part i pointed out is wrong, should be something like the PE, but they only provide one.

OK, when i turn around, i found this problem... Dragon box's illustration shows perfect fit, i guess it was my problem.

Carefully take out the dashboard.

fill that area with pla-plate and more sanding jobs.

I also tried to re-made some rivets.
ahhow - August 17, 2009 09:01 AM (GMT)
Made the unknown part from pla-plate, original part wrong in shape and too thick.
As for the part look like big handle, i replace it with old Huey part, the original part is rod-like but the real thing is actually "long plate" in shape. (I hope u can understand my poor English:rolleyes: )

No tail light. I saw off some space and slip in old Huey's light. But i placed it too high, i guess...

The original tail antenna is too thick and too steep in direction, i remade it from original part+sprue tree+old Huey part.

Add some small details to "landing stand".

Add detail on nose.

After study the reference, i found that these parts will be in wrong position if follow the manual. So more jobs lar........

to be continue
landyshah - August 17, 2009 09:29 AM (GMT)
Looking very nice as always ahhow...love your detail technique with all the scratchbuilt bits...who need resin and PE? :P
I feel sorry for your disaster on the dashboard....but well done to save it!
Haha, why use Malboro...must use DUNHILL :D
ahhow - August 24, 2009 07:04 AM (GMT)
Landyshah, can't use Dunhill lar, coz Dunhill pakaging is metallic 1, hahaha
Continue
Amended the position of these "things" by follow references.

For the amendment of the main rotor, just see picture

And the cut out original parts, i guess u know why i bother to wasted 5~6 hours to made amendments.

Made holes and replace with "mesh". There should be no border around the square holes in real heli, at first i decided to sand the inner part till very thin and glue the "mesh" from inside, but after approx 5~6 hours of sanding and trimming, it's still over 1mm thick, i felt tired and just cincai finished it. :D
My "mesh" is actually some kind of textile, the borders are made from paper.
Bud Bilko - August 24, 2009 07:48 AM (GMT)
Bro,
Keep it coming man!! Great work so far.
Sarjana Six Zero, out!!
ahhow - September 9, 2009 05:41 AM (GMT)
Super busy lately, back with new update...
Kits back rotor no detail+wrong, replaced with modified old Huey parts.

And the result, also replace the antenna with much more thinner 1, and add some simple details on the "tail".

I cut out the engine bay, make space for engine from old Huey.

And the result. i'm not going to add more detail to the engine as i will not show the model with opened engine cover. I just dun wanna let it looks empty when one see through the mesh. :D
ahhow - September 9, 2009 05:56 AM (GMT)
Made these parts with pla-plate, so lousy, haha

Added small details on the tips of main rotor.

New position for these parts.

PE looks too short and not able to wrap aroung the "landing stand", but in fact it was actually the kits "landing stand" not able to place deep enough. At 1st i decided to sand thin the part so that it can place deeper, but i doubt if the thinner part cannot bear the weight of the body. So at last, i just make a simple 1 from pla-plate...

And next, fly to the paint shop

The tiny details are often overlooked. You have reminded us how important they are.Keeping track of this topic eagerly.

Thanks brother Ahhui.
Actually i can only add simple details, for those modification beyond my capabilities, i just ignore it, no eye see, haha. :D

Awesome scratch-building and detail work here! Makes me want to throw mine away. :P
Bomber Vince - September 10, 2009 10:05 AM (GMT)
How, your work really awesome.
rtfoe - September 10, 2009 11:42 AM (GMT)
Been away so long from this forum that I missed this.
Really good work Ahhow. Makes my huey look like a 72nd scale wanting to be a 35th scale kit.
Keep up the good stuff. Really like your details.
Richard
ahhow - September 11, 2009 01:03 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys for reply.
Gb_madcat_sl: Dun throw away lar, give it to me, haha.
Rtfoe: Mine is nothing, your diorama in the making even make me jaw drop... Thanks anyway. :)
ahhow - September 16, 2009 07:44 AM (GMT)
I decided to glue the windscreen before process to the painting. As usual, problem again, 1mm gaps. Dragon box's illustration shows super perfect fit, guess it was my skill problem too, just fill lor.

Then, 3 colors camo painting begun, Olive drab and black 1st.

finally finished after several days, the real thing's camo edge is actually not this soft. I had mix my own Olive drab and Green refer to the real thing. But i had lighten all 3 colors by mixing with white, so that it will have more tone after washing or filtering. For modeller who are going to built this HEER, please don't follow box's art, it was wrong. However, the manual's color guide should be right.

After touched-up, i sprayed a layer of flat coat and put on decal. Some of the decals were deform when i pressed it with cotton bud, this cause by those super huge rivets and panel lines... So i have to touch-up those decal with paint.

For the window above pilots seat, i decided not to paint with transparency paint, it was too risky. I used green transparency paper instead (those for making lantern). I cut the shape and glue from inside.

The result still acceptable for me. Please note that there are 2 holes on the windscreen, its was for original kits part wipers <_<
I'll try to fill them with transparency glue since i will use PE wipers...
