Title: Wip02- Tugu Negara (weapons & Gears)
Description: Accessories parts

cptan - July 24, 2009 05:51 AM (GMT)
Well,

It has been a while since my last WIP posting Wip 01 - Tugu Negara, body posture conversion of project "Tugu Negara" for the coming Merdeka GB.

Now let me tell you why the loooong "break", it's due to this WIP with massive little similar small parts I've to create for our jungle fighters....

BACK PACK:
I've used paper clay as basic shap of all the back packs, note the curve shape to match the back of the figures.

Later applied thin layer of bondite and sculpted the detail of the back packs. completed 4 back packs. Notice the one on the right is attached with additional ammo pouch on each side. and the one on the left with half sculpted bedroll attached. There'll be buckles by wire added on the straps later.

AMMO POUCH:
These are ammo pouches were made in the same method with brass pin at the back.

WATER BOTTLE:
Next comes the water bottle, basic shape with paper clay on a brass pin. bondite laid on top for detail.

Brass pin were cut off and replace with cut plastic rod as cap. Comleted 5 of these.

BAYONETS:
The piece on the right was the original basic shape cut from zinc sheet (from hardware shop). 2nd and last pieces show the glue on the detail with plastic card, notice the "hole" on the bayonet guard which will be use as ring to mount on the carbine later.

JUNGLE MACHETE (knife):
These are jungle knife often used by the jungle fighter to cut their way across the jungle. Similar procedure as the bayonet, basic shap cut from zinc sheet. Then add on plastic card for detail. All 3 machetes are store in their scabbards.
But later I've found out these are too broad, which I'll trim them down later.

FIREARMS:
I need 3 x Enfield MK5 jungle carbines, 1 x BREN Mark 3 machine gun, 1 x STEN Mark V sub machine gun. Below are the basic shapes cut from 1mm plastic card.

BREN Mark 3 MACHINE GUN:

Take note that the BREN MK 3 version have a shorter barrel than the MK 1. Which was favour due to better movement in the jungle....

ENFIELD MK 5 JUNGLE CARBINE:
The most difficult part was the special conical mouth of the barrel which was built from bondite putty.
user posted image

The test fit of the bayonet "ring" into the conical mouth of the barrel. These will be supaglue later B4 painting.

STEN Mark V SUB MACHINE GUN:
The main chamber is made of Lolipop stick and the rest with plastic card. Note that I've inserted a home made spring inside.

PARTS:
Here are all the parts:
4 x back packs
4 x bedrolls
5 water bottles
3 x bayonets
3 x machetes
1 x Binoculos canvas pouch
10 x ammo pouches
1 x pistol in canvas holster
1 x BREN MK 3 Light Machine Gun
1 x STEN MK 5 Sub Machine Gun
3 x ENFIELD MK 5 Jungle Carbines

CP,
very nice.
Another way to get the conical piece done is to use the end of stretched sprue. Might be faster.

Cheers

Well done CP. Interesting way to cut down on Bondite by using paper clay as a base. Must be my old eyes but I remember you were going to this around 1/20th scale or so but looking at the equipment and the prone figgie they look to be closer to 1/35th. Just wondering.

The backpacks are pretty much on the dot for accuracy. The one with the side packs if I remember correctly were post WWII design while the ones without were WWII. Both were found during the Emergency. My only teeny comment are the water canteens. Most of the British ones at that time did not have the cap visible as they had large canvas sleeves. Although the ones you've done are not wrong either as British forces sometimes used the American designed canteens as well.

You might want to try out using a thicker pencil lead (0.9 mm or larger) like those found on mechanical pencils, slowly and evenly wear down the the sides with sandpaper which should be easy as its soft and use it to get the cone shaped muzzle. I suppose you could do it with a styrene rod as well but it will be harder to sand. Just my 2 cts.

Thanks alot guys, for all the feedback.

Kuman,
With you using bondite to make seat belt is merely the tips of the ice-burg of your hidden talent lar....

Beach,
About the water bottle, I'm doing the British version not the US one. As the US version have their obvious multiple sewing lines in front of the canvas pocket... while the British one only appear one sewing line as shown in the picture below (taken from diggerhistory.info). Perhaps my water battle should sculpted with larger pocket??!

Just completed taken pictures of the dry-fit figures... Will need some time processing these pictures then to upload to imageshack. Other than that I'm now proceeding into the TOUGHEST part (at least to me).... THE BASE.
