Title: Aichi E13a Jake
Description: ww2 japanese spotter
Loo CK - July 22, 2009 05:51 AM (GMT)
This japanese ww2 floatplane was involved in the sinking of the POW and the Repulse. Launced off the transports and the cruiser Kumano, the Jake had a very good reputation in its role.
This Hasegawa kit was released in 1990 and the mould and details are really minimal. The cockpit looks like a miniature classroom with walls, front 'blackboard' and chairs and nothing else.
I did this over the week and at the moment some base coat black is done over the plane to pick up areas to resand while the catapult base finish have been painted on.

Don't intend to superdetail or rescribe the raised panel line.
Thanks to Allan Chew for the tips in the rigging based on the last workshop

Now that the weekend is over and so is the sales, a bit of progress is made on the paintjob.
Once a while a kit comes along that you really want to take time and add on details. This is not one of those kits! So I have adopted a very lazy attitude to complete it and relying on heavy weathering to give it some interest. The pilot looks like Capt hook without the hook. Where is his hand???? The cockpit is none existence. Hopefully a blurry canopy will hide all of it!
The basic paint job is done with Gunze Aqueos, which immediately reminded me why I don't like the aquoes range. It dries too slowly. 4 days after the first coat and I can still leave fingerprint smudges. No choice anyway as I didn't have the Mr Color equivalent.
So with a bit of panel shading, some masking and a bit of post shading, the decal went on. The kit is in a stage of varied completion, which is how I usually approach painting.

I expect to heavily weather the bird because it does get in contact with salt water. Still sourcing for the correct number marking on the tail to make it relevant to Malaya.
C&C welcomed
cheers

Wouldn't you know it...hands free technology was available even back then. Such innovators, the Japanese... ^_^
Loo CK - July 28, 2009 03:56 AM (GMT)
and thought controls too! No control sticks nor side consoles.
PoohBear - July 28, 2009 04:13 AM (GMT)
Controls sticks are redundant. The pilot has no hands to operate them with anyway

This plane was famous for "VR guidance", the original control system was developed by Nintendo and Sega.

khahahaha!
Anyone remember the first VR gaming machine Genting brought into Malaysia?
I still remember it was Rm2 per game.

getting along nicely tauke...is there a slight gap at fuselage and wing root area perhaps?
by the way a bit off topic but were you one of the lucky fellow to purchase the retooled 'Matilda II' kit ? any reviews soon ? was at that infamous Underground shop but alas no longer in stock... <_<
Loo CK - July 28, 2009 05:40 AM (GMT)
Kay,
no luck on the matilda II yet but it can wait. Stock unlikely to run out for Tamiya unlike their Lancaster!!!!
As for the plane, I have yet to stick the wings onto the fuselage as I have yet to glue in the bottom clear parts. Thanks for the eagle eye observation!

Furthermore, no maroon box is visible within the surrounding.
Tauke Loo, good progress on the plane. Is this a re-issue model kit by Hasegawa? I don't do much planes so I don't know much. :D
Loo CK - July 29, 2009 10:07 AM (GMT)
Druid,
the kit's decal read 1990.......
it was reissued a few times with different versions

Silantra: It doesnt look like me, it doesnt sound like me, but...i cant say if it wasnt me. Also, I smoke Dunhill
Loo, I built this Jake kit ages and ages ago..there is another colour scheme which is green n grey rite? That time they didnt give you the catapult..think mid 80s release...
BTW, love your 300CE! Best of the W124 series, along with E500.....im looking for a 280E W123 to add to my 280SL R107....know any?
Silantra - July 29, 2009 01:18 PM (GMT)
Shah, ooh it's not u..
i thought that's u in disguise ....
anyway, Loo, as usual superb build.... do the canopy blur in reality?? the pilot must be heck of of a driver

new update!
painting is 90% and weathering started with modulation paintwork, oil wash and some brushing with 1000 grit sandpaper to bring out the raised lines inner coat of black.
Some more work and will likely finish it this week.

the markings for the Kumano planes have no reference so the tail number is pure speculation.
Anyone out there has a copy of the Kumano Tamiya 1:700 kit? There might be a hint there on the tail markings.
cheers
