Title: F/a-18c On Carrier Deck
dg0816 - July 3, 2009 01:00 PM (GMT)
Hi, I'm new here...just want to introduce some of my collection..
This F/A-18C serves onboard USS Kitty Hawk with squardron VFA-192 aka "Golden Dragons".
This model is a 1/48 Monogram kit, and they don't produce this kit anymore. Monogram kits, unlike newer ones such as Hasegawa or Tamiya, requires lots of extensive work esp penel lines, sanding, etc. This is a heavily weathered model to reflect the actual conditions.
Some close-ups...

Really great looking Hornet especially for a Monogram. Love the Golden Dragons markings.

Nice work and looks like the heavy wash works too on this bird.
The carrier deck is a kit?

No, its made from a soft wood board and drilled with holes to stimulate drainage. The holes are overlaid with 2 wires as covers. Making the board is the easiest part.
There are some really ambitious guys who made the catapult rails and jet blast panels too. And I've even seen a 1/32 version which can be raised and lowered by electric motor.

Well done!
Have built a few of the Monogram/Revell F-18's (3 actually) and have to say you did a great job.
Welcome to SMM!

Very nice work :)
Did you DIY the chain (I don't know if I should call it a chain :P ) that tied the landing gear to the deck as well?
dg0816 - July 6, 2009 04:07 AM (GMT)
Engine intakes' net covers and chains were improvised from daily household items.
Intake covers are cut from laundry bags. Some bags' net are too fine, others are too big. You need to search for the right size to scale. This is example of laundry bag.

Chains are cut from a tea mesh ball. Alternatively, you can use kitchen sink's chains.

Great replica! A lot of skill in fabricating the net.

are the rbf tags a decal or are they from the eduard set?

dude..welcome on board..
well..i'm more into sports cars modelling, but after watching your F/A 18..you made me wanna try to build an aircraft!
actually i don't know about the price of an aircraft kit, will it be more expensive than car kits? usually car kits retailed not more than 170..

Fighter jet kits are more expensive esp the 1/32 ones.
I started my love with this hobby with 1/48 F-4E Phantom II (my 1st love).
Twenty years now, I've gone into other collections such as sci-fi, airliner (1/400; 1/200), Macross, tanks (1/35), Star Wars figures.
